Parallel waveform extraction algorithms for the Cherenkov Telescope Array Real-Time Analysis
The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation observatory for
the study of very high-energy gamma rays from about 20 GeV up to 300 TeV.
Thanks to the large effective area and field of view, the CTA observatory will
be characterized by an unprecedented sensitivity to transient flaring gamma-ray
phenomena compared to both current ground (e.g. MAGIC, VERITAS, H.E.S.S.) and
space (e.g. Fermi) gamma-ray telescopes. In order to trigger the astrophysics
community for follow-up observations, or being able to quickly respond to
external science alerts, a fast analysis pipeline is crucial. This will be
accomplished by means of a Real-Time Analysis (RTA) pipeline, a fast and
automated science alert trigger system, becoming a key system of the CTA
observatory. Among the CTA design key requirements to the RTA system, the most
challenging is the generation of alerts within 30 seconds from the last
acquired event, while obtaining a flux sensitivity not worse than the one of
the final analysis by more than a factor of 3. A dedicated software and
hardware architecture for the RTA pipeline must be designed and tested. We
present comparison of OpenCL solutions using different kind of devices like
CPUs, Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) and Field Programmable Array (FPGA) cards
for the Real-Time data reduction of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA)
triggered data.Comment: In Proceedings of the 34th International Cosmic Ray Conference

I licenziamenti e le procedure concorsuali = Layoffs and insolvency proceedings. WP C.S.D.L.E. âMassimo DâAntonaâ.IT â 354/2018
The essay analyzes various issues directly related with the recent repeal of Article 3, Law n. 223/1991, as far as the protection of workers is concerned.
To be more accurate, the Author focuses on the settled case-law, which tends to extend the application of Article 72 of Italian Bankrupting Law to employment relationships. As a consequence, employment relationships should be considered as suspended, without any wage payment, until the insolvency administrator establishes the continuation or the dissolution (with retroactive effects, from the declaration of bankruptcy).
Furthermore, the analysis pays attention to the dismissalsâ framework and its links with bankruptcy proceedings
Clinical applications of squamous cell carcinoma antigen-immunoglobulins M to monitor chronic hepatitis C
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is the main cause of chronic liver disease and cirrhosis in Western countries. Over time, the majority of cirrhotic patients develop hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), one of the most common fatal cancers worldwide - fourth for incidence rate. A high public health priority need is the development of biomarkers to screen for liver disease progression and for early diagnosis of HCC development, particularly in the high risk population represented by HCV-positive patients with cirrhosis. Several studies have shown that serological determination of a novel biomarker, squamous cell carcinoma antigen-immunoglobulins M (SCCA-IgM), might be useful to identify patients with progressive liver disease. In the initial part of this review we summarize the main clinical studies that have investigated this new circulating biomarker on HCV-infected patients, providing evidence that in chronic hepatitis C SCCA-IgM may be used to monitor progression of liver disease, and also to assess the virological response to antiviral treatment. In the last part of this review we address other, not less important, clinical applications of this biomarker in hepatology
CIWS-FW: a Customizable InstrumentWorkstation Software Framework for instrument-independent data handling
The CIWS-FW is aimed at providing a common and standard solution for the
storage, processing and quick look at the data acquired from scientific
instruments for astrophysics. The target system is the instrument workstation
either in the context of the Electrical Ground Support Equipment for
space-borne experiments, or in the context of the data acquisition system for
instrumentation. The CIWS-FW core includes software developed by team members
for previous experiments and provides new components and tools that improve the
software reusability, configurability and extensibility attributes. The CIWS-FW
mainly consists of two packages: the data processing system and the data access
system. The former provides the software components and libraries to support
the data acquisition, transformation, display and storage in near real time of
either a data packet stream and/or a sequence of data files generated by the
instrument. The latter is a meta-data and data management system, providing a
reusable solution for the archiving and retrieval of the acquired data. A
built-in operator GUI allows to control and configure the IW. In addition, the
framework provides mechanisms for system error and logging handling. A web
portal provides the access to the CIWS-FW documentation, software repository
and bug tracking tools for CIWS-FW developers. We will describe the CIWS-FW
architecture and summarize the project status.Comment: Accepted for pubblication on ADASS Conference Serie
Optical orientation of electron spins and valence band spectroscopy in germanium
We have investigated optical orientation in the vicinity of the direct gap of
bulk germanium. The electron spin polarization is studied via
polarization-resolved photoluminescence excitation spectroscopy unfolding the
interplay between doping and ultrafast electron transfer from the center of the
Brillouin zone towards its edge. As a result, the direct-gap photoluminescence
circular polarisation can vary from 30% to -60% when the excitation laser
energy increases. This study provides also simultaneous access to the resonant
electronic Raman scattering due to inter-valence band excitations of
spin-polarized holes, yielding a fast and versatile spectroscopic approach for
the determination of the energy spectrum of holes in semiconducting materials
Peliosis hepatis. Personal experience and literature review
Peliosis hepatis (PH) is a disease characterized by
multiple and small, blood-filled cysts within the
parenchymatous organs. PH is a very rare disease,
more common in adults, and when it affects the liver, it
comes to the surgeonâs attention only in an extremely
urgent situation after the lesionâs rupture with the
resulting hemoperitoneum. This report describes the
case of a 29-year-old woman affected by recurring
abdominal pain. CT scans showed a hepatic lesion
formed by multiple hypodense areas, which showed
an early acquisition of the contrast during the arterial
phase. Furthermore, it remained isodense with the
remaining parenchyma during the late venous phase.
We decided on performing a liver resection of segment
â
Š while avoiding a biopsy for safety reasons. The
histopathologic examination confirmed the diagnosis
of focal PH. PH should always be considered in the
differential diagnosis of hepatic lesions. Clinicians
should discuss the possible causes and issues related to
the differential diagnosis in addition to the appropriate
therapeutic approach. The fortuitous finding of a
lesion, potentially compatible with PH, requires elective
surgery with diagnostic and therapeutic intents. The
main aim is to prevent the risk of a sudden bleeding
that, in absence of properly equipped structures, may
have a fatal outcome
CIWS Software Specification Document (SSD)
The Customizable Instrument Workstation Software (CIWS) is a telescope - and instrument - independent software system for raw Level 0 (L0) and Level 1 (L1) data handling.
The system is aimed at providing a common and standard solution for the storage, processing, quick look and retrieval of the data generated by space-borne or ground-based telescopes and by the auxiliary data sources (e.g.: calibration facilities housekeeping) during the development, integration, verification, test and operation activities to be carried out on the telescope instrument.
The present document represents the output of the Software Requirement phase and of the Architectural Design phase.
The purposes of this document are the following:
1. to serve as a tool to gather the software requirements that will drive the development of the software of this subsystem
2. it could be used as a guide to select and re-use existing software, to be identified at a later stage during the architecture definition of the subsystem
3. it should be used to identify the correct interfaces with external system
On analysing the world distribution of income
This paper argues that consideration of world inequality should cause us to re-examine the key concepts underlying the welfare approach to the measurement of income inequality and the inter-relation between the measurement of inequality and the measurement of poverty. There are three reasons why we feel that a re-examination is necessary: (i) the extent of global income differences means that we cannot simply carry over the methods used at a national level; we need a more flexible measure; (ii) we have to reconcile measures of world inequality and world poverty; and (iii) we need to explore more fully the different ways in which measures may be relative or absolute. This leads us to propose a new measure, which (a) combines poverty and inequality, including provision for those who are concerned only with poverty, (b) incorporates different approaches to the measurement of inequality; and (c) allows the cost of inequality to be expressed in different ways. Applied to the world distribution for the period 1820-1992, the new measure provides different perspectives on the evolution of global inequality.global income inequality, absolute vs. relative inequality, poverty, world citizens
