Banishing AdS ghosts with a UV cutoff
A recent attempt to make sense of scalars in AdS with "Neumann boundary
conditions" outside of the usual BF-window
led to pathologies including (depending on the precise context) either IR
divergences or the appearance of ghosts. Here we argue that such ghosts may be
banished by imposing a UV cutoff. It is also possible to achieve this goal in
certain UV completions. An example is the above AdS theory with a radial cutoff
supplemented by particular boundary conditions on the cutoff surface. In this
case we explicitly identify a region of parameter space for which the theory is
ghost free. At low energies, this theory may be interpreted as the standard
dual CFT (defined with "Dirichlet" boundary conditions) interacting with an
extra scalar via an irrelevant interaction. We also discuss the relationship to
recent works on holographic fermi surfaces and quantum criticality.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figure
Non-Equilibrium Field Dynamics of an Honest Holographic Superconductor
Most holographic models of superconducting systems neglect the effects of
dynamical boundary gauge fields during the process of spontaneous
symmetry-breaking. Usually a global symmetry gets broken. This yields a
superfluid, which then is gauged "weakly" afterwards. In this work we build
(and probe the dynamics of) a holographic model in which a local boundary
symmetry is spontaneously broken instead. We compute two-point functions of
dynamical non-Abelian gauge fields in the normal and in the broken phase, and
find non-trivial gapless modes. Our AdS3 gravity dual realizes a p-wave
superconductor in (1+1) dimensions. The ground state of this model also breaks
(1+1)-dimensional parity spontaneously, while the Hamiltonian is
parity-invariant. We discuss possible implications of our results for a wider

Short-cut to new anomalies in gravity duals to logarithmic conformal field theories
Various massive gravity theories in three dimensions are conjecturally dual
to logarithmic conformal field theories (LCFTs). We summarise the status of
these conjectures. LCFTs are characterised by the values of the central charges
and the so-called "new anomalies". We employ a short-cut to calculate these new
anomalies in generalised massive gravity and in the recently proposed
higher-derivative gravity theories with holographic c-theorem. Both cases
permit LCFTs exhibiting intriguing features, like rank three Jordan cells or
non-zero central charges. Finally, as an example we discuss in some detail the
partially massless version of new massive gravity, a theory with several

Effects of external nutrient sources and extreme weather events on the nutrient budget of a Southern European coastal lagoon
The seasonal and annual nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and carbon (C) budgets of the mesotidal Ria Formosa lagoon, southern Portugal, were estimated to reveal the main inputs and outputs, the seasonal patterns, and how they may influence the ecological functioning of the system. The effects of extreme weather events such as long-lasting strong winds causing upwelling and strong rainfall were assessed. External nutrient inputs were quantified; ocean exchange was assessed in 24-h sampling campaigns, and final calculations were made using a hydrodynamic model of the lagoon. Rain and stream inputs were the main freshwater sources to the lagoon. However, wastewater treatment plant and groundwater discharges dominated nutrient input, together accounting for 98, 96, and 88 % of total C, N, and P input, respectively. Organic matter and nutrients were continuously exported to the ocean. This pattern was reversed following extreme events, such as strong winds in early summer that caused upwelling and after a period of heavy rainfall in late autumn. A principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that ammonium and organic N and C exchange were positively associated with temperature as opposed to pH and nitrate. These variables reflected mostly the benthic lagoon metabolism, whereas particulate P exchange was correlated to Chl a, indicating that this was more related to phytoplankton dynamics. AdS/CFT beyond the unitarity bound
Scalars in AdS with squared masses in the Breitenlohner-Freedman
window (in units with the AdS scale set to
1) are known to enjoy a variety of boundary conditions. For larger masses , unitarity bounds in possible dual CFTs suggest that such general
boundary conditions should lead to ghosts. We show that this is not always the
case as, for conformally-invariant boundary conditions in Poincar\'e AdS that
would naively violate unitarity bounds, the system is generically ghost-free.
Conflicts with unitarity bounds are avoided due to the presence of unexpected
pure gauge modes and an associated infrared divergence. The expected ghosts
appear when the IR divergence is removed either by deforming these boundary
