Avaliação de Aparelhos Eletrônicos Repelentes de Mosquitos Usando-se Aedes albopictus (Skuse) (Diptera: Culicidae)
The mosquito-repelling devices Anti-Pic®, Mosquito Repeller® DX-600 and Bye-Bye Mosquito® were evaluated in boxes for experimentation by exposing human hands to Aedes albopictus (Skuse) adults. Two sets of tests were performed based on 15 min. expositions. In the first set both hands were introduced in the box, one of them holding the device on. In the second set only one hand was introduced each time, holdind the device on or off. The devices failed to show efficiency in both evaluations. A seemingly 30.3% repellency due to Anti-Pic® in the first set of experiments was not confirmed in the second set. It was discussed the value of such devices for dengue prevention.
On the radial expansion of tubular structures in a quark gluon plasma
We study the radial expansion of cylindrical tubes in a hot QGP. These tubes
are treated as perturbations in the energy density of the system which is
formed in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC. We start from the equations of
relativistic hydrodynamics in two spatial dimensions and cylindrical symmetry
and perform an expansion of these equations in a small parameter, conserving
the nonlinearity of the hydrodynamical formalism. We consider both ideal and
viscous fluids and the latter are studied with a relativistic Navier-Stokes
equation. We use the equation of state of the MIT bag model. In the case of
ideal fluids we obtain a breaking wave equation for the energy density
fluctuation, which is then solved numerically. We also show that, under certain
assumptions, perturbations in a relativistic viscous fluid are governed by the
Burgers equation. We estimate the typical expansion time of the tubes
Mapping dynamical systems onto complex networks
A procedure to characterize chaotic dynamical systems with concepts of
complex networks is pursued, in which a dynamical system is mapped onto a
network. The nodes represent the regions of space visited by the system, while
edges represent the transitions between these regions. Parameters used to
quantify the properties of complex networks, including those related to higher
order neighborhoods, are used in the analysis. The methodology is tested for
the logistic map, focusing the onset of chaos and chaotic regimes. It is found
that the corresponding networks show distinct features, which are associated to
the particular type of dynamics that have generated them.Comment: 13 pages, 8 eps files in 5 figure

Interpreting measures of tuberculosis transmission : a case study on the Portuguese population
Background: Tuberculosis remains a high burden for Human society despite considerable investments in its control. Unique features in the history of infection and transmission dynamics of tuberculosis pose serious limitations on the direct interpretation of surveillance data and call for models that incorporate latent processes and simulate specific interventions. Methods: A transmission model was adjusted to the dataset of active tuberculosis cases reported in Portugal between 2002 and 2009. We estimated key transmission parameters from the data (i.e. time to diagnosis, treatment length, default proportion, proportion of pulmonary TB cases). Using the adjusted model to the Portuguese case, we estimated the total burden of tuberculosis in Portugal. We further performed sensitivity analysis to heterogeneities in susceptibility to infection and exposure intensity. Results: We calculated a mean time to diagnose of 2.81 months and treatment length of 8.80 months in Portugal. The proportion defaulting treatment was calculated as 0.04 and the proportion of pulmonary cases as 0.75. Using these values, we estimated a TB burden of 1.6 million infected persons, corresponding to more than 15% of the Portuguese population. We further described the sensitivity of these estimates to heterogeneity. Conclusions: We showed that the model reproduces well the observed dynamics of the Portuguese data, thus demonstrating its adequacy for devising control strategies for TB and predicting the effects of interventions
Regionalização Da Saúde: (in)visibilidade E (i)materialidade Da Universalidade E Integralidade Em Saúde No Trânsito De Institucionalidades
Regionalization is a strategy of organization and integration of services in national health systems, in a path to be followed toward comprehensiveness and universal access. However, its principles are still invisible in Brazilian society, and the forms of management in health regions are questioned, as well as its actual effects on the construction of health as a right. This article is dedicated to such questioning and falls as a production aiming to denature processes and enable the emergence of events put into invisibility because of the “discursive formations” of health regionalization. This study comprises the regionalization process of Ceará’s health system since the 1990s. This is a qualitative study that examines the reports of 23 state managers of health, as well as the documentary narratives related to this issue. This study aims to build “bundles of relations”, articulating the subjects and institutions in the production of “knowledge-power and truth-power”, according to Foucault’s reference, and in dialogue with public health authors. The regionalization of Ceará points to a reform of the health sector, delegating the management and provision of services to the Social Organization and to the consortium, on procedural and productive contracting, strengthening the “entrepreneurship” of health and thus affecting the production of comprehensiveness and universality. We conclude that the Unified Health System's constitutional stratum is undergoing a breaking process, forging another “regime of comprehensiveness and universality”, that can be observed in the fact that the Unified Health System is between institutionalities, and in the change from the right to health care to customer right in a reductionist shift. © 2016, UNIV SAOPAULO. Potential alternative feed sources for ruminant feeding from the biodiesel production chain by-products
This study aimed to evaluate the chemical composition, fractionation of nitrogen compounds and carbohydrates, digestibility parameters, gas production kinetics and ruminal fermentation of fruit seed cakes. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with three fruit seed cakes (treatments) and four replications. The cakes were made of seeds of custard apple (Annona squamosa), soursop (Annona muricata) and passion fruit (Passiflora edulis), which were collected in a biodiesel plant. The passion fruit seed cake presented the highest content of dry matter, neutral detergent fibre crude protein (NDFcp), acid detergent fibre (ADF), lignin and total carbohydrates (P<0.05). The custard apple seed cake presented high proportions of crude protein, condensed tannins and digestible energy (P<0.05). The soursop seed cake presented higher values for ether extract and total digestible nutrients (P<0.05). For potential degradability, the authors detected a difference between the custard apple, soursop and passion fruit seed cakes. The total volume of gases was higher for custard apple and soursop seed cakes. Custard apple seed cake presented higher proportions of in vitro degradation parameters (P<0.05). Thus this cake could provide greater nutrient levels when supplied in ruminant diets, followed by soursop seed cake and passion fruit seed cake.

Quantum Yang-Mills gravity in flat space-time and effective curved space-time for motions of classical objects
Yang-Mills gravity with translational gauge group T(4) in flat space-time
implies a simple self-coupling of gravitons and a truly conserved
energy-momentum tensor. Its consistency with experiments crucially depends on
an interesting property that an `effective Riemannian metric tensor' emerges in
and only in the geometric-optics limit of the photon and particle wave
equations. We obtain Feynman rules for a coupled graviton-fermion system,
including a general graviton propagator with two gauge parameters and the
interaction of ghost particles. The equation of motion of macroscopic objects,
as an N-body system, is demonstrated as the geometric-optics limit of the
fermion wave equation. We discuss a relativistic Hamilton-Jacobi equation with
an `effective Riemann metric tensor' for the classical particles.Comment: 20 pages, to be published in "The European Physical Journal -
