Sexual Assault Study: Differences by Age of Victim

Poster originally presented to the Anchorage Police Department and the 2004 Alaska Summit on Violence Against Women.This issue of Anchorage Community Indicators Series 2, "Sexual Assault Study," describes the spatial patterning and geographical concentration of 541 sexual assaults reported to the Anchorage Police Department in 2000–2001 by age of victim. Analysis compares the 210 victims that were less than 21 years old to the 339 victims that were 21 years old or older. Most suspects were older than their victims. Measurement of the ortho-positronium confinement energy in mesoporous thin films

In this paper, we present measurements of the ortho-positronium emission energy in vacuum from mesoporous films using the time of flight technique. We show evidence of quantum mechanical confinement in the mesopores that defines the minimal energy of the emitted Ps. Two samples with different effective pore sizes, measured with positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, are compared for the data collected in the temperature range 50-400 K. The sample with smaller pore size exhibits a higher minimal energy ($73\pm$5 meV), compared to the sample with bigger pores ($48\pm$5 meV), due to the stronger confinement. The dependence of the emission energy with the temperature of the target is modeled as ortho-positronium being confined in rectangular boxes in thermodynamic equilibrium with the sample. Modeling and Optimization of M-cresol Isopropylation for Obtaining N-thymol: Combining a Hybrid Artificial Neural Network with a Genetic Algorithm

The application of a hybrid framework based on the combination, artificial neural network-genetic algorithm (ANN-GA), for n-thymol synthesis modeling and optimization has been developed. The effects of molar ratio propylene/cresol (X1), catalyst mass (X2) and temperature (X3) on n-thymol selectivity Y1 and m-cresol conversion Y2 were studied. A 3-8-2 ANN model was found to be very suitable for reaction modeling. The multiobjective optimization, led to optimal operating conditions (0.55 ≤X1≤0.77; 1.773 g ≤ X2 ≤1.86 g; 289.74 °C ≤ X3 ≤291.33 °C) representing good solutions for obtaining high n-thymol selectivity and high m-cresol conversion. This optimal zone corresponded to n-thymol selectivity and m-cresol conversion ranging respectively in the interval [79.3; 79.5]% and [13.4 %; 23.7]%. These results were better than those obtained with a sequential method based on experimental design for which, optimum conditions led to n-thymol selectivity and m-cresol conversion values respectively equal to 67%and 11%. The hybrid method ANN-GA showed its ability to solve complex problems with a good fitting

L’impact du drainage agricole souterrain sur la morphologie des petits cours d’eau dans la région de Cookshire, Québec

Le drainage agricole souterrain a des effets sur l'hydrologie des bassins versants, ce qui, selon toute vraisemblance, se répercute sur la morphologie des cours d'eau. Cette note montre que, pour une même superficie de drainage, les petits cours d'eau des bassins versants où il y a drainage souterrain sont plus larges et de plus grande dimension que ceux sans drainage souterrain. Bien que le lien entre cet effet et les changements du régime hydrologique n'ait pu être établi directement, les résultats laissent croire à une augmentation des débits de pointe par suite de l'implantation des drains souterrains.Land drainage induces hydrological changes which should effect stream channel morphology. This paper shows that, for a similar drainage area, small stream channels of watersheds with land drainage are larger in width and size than those without land drainage. Despite the fact that a direct link between this morphological effect and changes in the hydrological regime has not been established, these results suggest an increase in peak discharge following the introduction of land drainage

Quelle gestion des incivilités dans les entreprises accueillant du public ?

La notion d’incivilité regroupe un très large éventail de conduites : indifférence, impolitesse, dégradations, agressivité verbale. Les espaces publics de la Société nationale des Chemins de fer (SNCF) comme ceux de La Poste sont des lieux de brassage social, d’attente prolongée, de mélange entre besoins individuels et traitement de masse. La qualité de service y est intimement liée à la qualité du lien social. Les salariés de ces entreprises font remonter régulièrement le poids croissant des incivilités dont ils sont les témoins ou l’objet. Face à ces actes problématiques, la SNCF et La Poste ont engagé des travaux de recherche analysant les facteurs de dégradation et les leviers de régulation de la civilité dans leurs espaces.Incivility covers a wide range of behaviours – indifference, rudeness, insults, verbal aggression. The public spaces of the railways [SNCF] and the post office are places of social encounter, long waits, and a mix of mass treatment and individual needs. The quality of service is intimately linked to the quality of social ties. Employees in these companies must regularly overcome an increasing burden of incivilities of which they are the object or a witness. Faced with such problem behaviours, the railway companies and the postal service are engaged in research to analyse the factors that account for this degradation and the mechanisms for regulating civility in their public spaces
