Since then, interest in neighborhood watch has grown considerably and recent estimates suggest that over a quarter of the UK population and over forty per cent of the US population live in areas covered by neighborhood watch schemes.     The metal metal bonded molecule [Bu4N][ HL 2Fe6 dmf 2] Fe6 was previously shown to possess a thermally isolated spin S 19 2 ground state and found to exhibit slow magnetization relaxation below a blocking temperature of amp; 8764;5 K [J. Am. Chem. Soc.2015, 137, 13949 13956]. Here, we present a comprehensive spectroscopic investigation of this unique single molecule magnet SMM , combining ultrawideband field swept high field electron paramagnetic resonance EPR with frequency domain Fourier transform terahertz EPR to accurately quantify the spin Hamiltonian parameters of Fe6. Of particular importance is the near absence of a 4th order axial zero field splitting term, which is known to arise because of quantum mechanical mixing of spin states on account of the relatively weak spin spin superexchange interactions in traditional polynuclear SMMs such as the celebrated Mn12 acetate. The combined high resolution measurements on both powder samples and an oriented single crystal provide a quantitative measure of the isolated nature of the spin ground state in the Fe6 molecule, as well as additional microscopic insights into factors that govern the quantum tunneling of its magnetization.     The present paper focuses on the economic evaluation of the observed differences in maternal productivity of different genetic lines in Angus cattle that were managed under contrasting nutritional regimes typical of southern Australia. Five hundred Angus cows were managed concurrently at two locations in southern Australia. On each site, the cows were managed under the following two different nutritional treatments: High and Low, to simulate different stocking rates. Cows selected for a divergence in either carcass rib-fat depth or residual feed intake based on mid-parent estimated breeding values for those traits, were allocated in replicate groups to either High- or Low-nutrition treatments. By design, the supplementary feeding regime was the same for the High and Low genetic lines to ensure genetic differences were not confounded with management differences. Animal productivity results from the experiment were used as input data to evaluate the economic performance of the four genetic lines under the two nutritional treatments. Two methods were used; the first was a gross-margin calculation of income minus variable costs as AU$ per breeding cow for a 1000-cow herd; the second was a whole-farm linear programming model maximising the gross margin. Stocking rates were optimised by matching the energy requirements for the whole herd with the energy available from pasture and supplementary feed on a representative 700-ha farm. Using the two methods of calculating gross margin (per cow and optimised per hectare), including examination of sensitivity to changes in prices of cattle and supplementary feed, the present study demonstrated that genetically leaner cows due to selection of low fat or low residual feed intake, had gross margins superior to those of genetically fatter cows. They generated more income by selling more liveweight due to heavier weights and higher stocking rates. The results are affected by the management system utilised and some confounding with growth (leaner genetic lines had higher growth estimated breeding values), but will assist producers to make more informed decisions about how to manage animal breeding and nutritional interactions

    Submarine glide blocks from the Lower Cretaceous of the Antarctic Peninsula

    Isolated exotic blocks of late Jurassic age occur within an undeformed succession of marine Lower Cretaceous back‐arc basin deposits on the west coast of James Ross Island, Antarctica. These flat, tabular slabs range up to 200 × 800 m in cross‐section and lie concordant with the enclosing Cretaceous strata. Although mainly undeformed, one block displays a range of emplacement‐related deformation structures, comparable in many respects to tectonic fabrics produced by simple shear. Emplacement by submarine block gliding is proposed, possibly as the final phase in the evolution of a composite mass transport event. Derivation of such gigantic slabs requires the existence of a steep, highly unstable basin margin during the early Cretaceous. In more complex terranes, differentiation between gravity slides and thrust slices can be difficult. Clearly, internal and marginal disruption of an allochthonous unit is not diagnostic since structures developed within a lithified block during submarine gliding may closely mimic tectonic fabrics. Where contact relationships are ambiguous, emplacement by gravity sliding is suggested by the increasing intensity of internal disruption towards the basal margin and by the style of deformation, reflecting simple shear under low overburden

    The ninth data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey : first spectroscopic data from the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey

    The Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III) presents the first spectroscopic data from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). This ninth data release (DR9) of the SDSS project includes 535,995 new galaxy spectra (median z ∼ 0.52), 102,100 new quasar spectra (median z ∼ 2.32), and 90,897 new stellar spectra, along with the data presented in previous data releases. These spectra were obtained with the new BOSS spectrograph and were taken between 2009 December and 2011 July. In addition, the stellar parameters pipeline, which determines radial velocities, surface temperatures, surface gravities, and metallicities of stars, has been updated and refined with improvements in temperature estimates for stars with Teff −0.5. DR9 includes new stellar parameters for all stars presented in DR8, including stars from SDSS-I and II, as well as those observed as part of the SEGUE-2. The astrometry error introduced in the DR8 imaging catalogs has been corrected in the DR9 data products. The next data release for SDSS-III will be in Summer 2013, which will present the first data from the APOGEE along with another year of data from BOSS, followed by the final SDSS-III data release in 2014 December
