The whole story: treatment outcomes with SymbicortÂź
AbstractAsthma is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the airways that has a considerable socioeconomic impact. Asthma management guidelines have been introduced to help provide better long-term control of asthma. Although recommended guidelines may increase the direct medication costs, the overall direct costs of asthma may be reduced due to fewer exacerbations. In addition, indirect costs due to lost productivity and mortality are reduced and patients have an improved quality of life. Inhaled corticosteroids are first-line therapy in the treatment of persistent asthma. Against this background, we have assessed the cost-effectiveness of SymbicortÂź (budesonide and formoterol in a single inhaler), atreatmentthat provides better control of asthma compared with budesonide alone.While the prescribing costs of SymbicortÂź were found to be higher than for budesonide alone, these were partially offset by reduced costs due to fewer asthma exacerbations and a reduced need for other medications. Combined long-term therapy with budesonide and formoterol also improves patient quality of life compared with budesonide alone. Two other factors associated with asthma treatment success and cost-effectiveness are patient/physician education and good patient adherence to prescribed therapy. The introduction of a single inhaler that is easy to use in simple treatment regimens may improve patient adherence to prescribed medication, thus resulting in improved asthma control and fewer exacerbations.Treatment with SymbicortÂź is more cost-effective than treatment with budesonide alone
Dynamical simulation of spin-glass and chiral-glass orderings in three-dimensional Heisenberg spin glasses
Spin-glass and chiral-glass orderings in three-dimensional Heisenberg spin
glasses are studied with and without randaom magnetic anisotropy by dynamical
Monte Carlo simulations. In isotropic case, clear evidence of a
finite-temperature chiral-glass transition is presented. While the spin
autocorrelation exhibits only an interrupted aging, the chirality
autocorrelation persists to exhibit a pronounced aging effect reminisecnt of
the one observed in the mean-field model. In anisotropic case, asymptotic
mixing of the spin and the chirality is observed in the off-equilibrium

Allochthonous Carbon-a Major Driver of Bacterioplankton Production in the Subarctic Northern Baltic Sea
Heterotrophic bacteria are, in many aquatic systems, reliant on autochthonous organic carbon as their energy source. One exception is low-productive humic lakes, where allochthonous dissolved organic matter (ADOM) is the major driver. We hypothesized that bacterial production (BP) is similarly regulated in subarctic estuaries that receive large amounts of riverine material. BP and potential explanatory factors were measured during May-August 2011 in the subarctic RAyenne Estuary, northern Sweden. The highest BP was observed in spring, concomitant with the spring river-flush and the lowest rates occurred during summer when primary production (PP) peaked. PLS correlations showed that similar to 60 % of the BP variation was explained by different ADOM components, measured as humic substances, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM). On average, BP was threefold higher than PP. The bioavailability of allochthonous dissolved organic carbon (ADOC) exhibited large spatial and temporal variation; however, the average value was low, similar to 2 %. Bioassay analysis showed that BP in the near-shore area was potentially carbon limited early in the season, while BP at seaward stations was more commonly limited by nitrogen-phosphorus. Nevertheless, the bioassay indicated that ADOC could contribute significantly to the in situ BP, similar to 60 %. We conclude that ADOM is a regulator of BP in the studied estuary. Thus, projected climate-induced increases in river discharge suggest that BP will increase in subarctic coastal areas during the coming century.Peer reviewe
Double photo-ionization of He near a polarizable surface
We calculate the differential cross-section of the direct double
photo-ionization of He physisorbed on a polarizable surface. By including the
influence of the surface potential in the correlated two-electron final state
wavefunction, we show that the differential cross-section carries detailed
information on the electronic correlations at the surface. In particular,
photo-emission along opposite directions, which is prohibited in the free

Memory Effect, Rejuvenation and Chaos Effect in the Multi-layer Random Energy Model
We introduce magnetization to the Multi-layer Random Energy Model which has a
hierarchical structure, and perform Monte Carlo simulation to observe the
behavior of ac-susceptibility. We find that this model is able to reproduce
three prominent features of spin glasses, i.e., memory effect, rejuvenation and
chaos effect, which were found recently by various experiments on aging

Analytical Solution of the Off-Equilibrium Dynamics of a Long Range Spin-Glass Model
We study the non-equilibrium relaxation of the spherical spin-glass model
with p-spin interactions in the limit. We analytically
solve the asymptotics of the magnetization and the correlation and response
functions for long but finite times. Even in the thermodynamic limit the system
exhibits `weak' (as well as `true') ergodicity breaking and aging effects. We
determine a functional Parisi-like order parameter which plays a
similar role for the dynamics to that played by the usual function for the

Numerical study of the lattice vacancy effects on the single-channel electron transport of graphite ribbons
Lattice vacancy effects on electrical conductance of nanographite ribbon are
investigated by means of the Landauer approach using a tight binding model. In
the low-energy regime ribbons with zigzag boundary provide a single conducting
channel whose origin is connected with the presence of edge states. It is found
that the chemical potential dependence of conductance strongly depends on the
difference () of the number of removed A and B sublattice sites. The
large lattice vacancy with shows zero-conductance dips
in the single-channel region, however, the large lattice vacancy with
has no dip structure in this region. The connection between this
conductance rule and the Longuet-Higgins conjecture is also discussed
