    Closed systems : Alexandra Luke, Hortense Gordon and the Canadian art history canon

    The marginalization of women's art within the Canadian art history canon articulates the dichotomy which exists between the practice of making art in a Canadian context and the selective recording of that practice within written history. Canadian painters Alexandra Luke and Hortense Gordon made significant contributions to the development and acceptance of abstract art in Canada, not simply through their own art practice, but also as teachers, lecturers and exhibition organizers, especially in Ontario. In spite of this contribution and the local, national and international reputations that both women enjoyed, their work does not appear in a position of significance in Canadian art history texts. The origin and meaning of this marginalization is based on the social construction of gender with the standard canon privileging male production. Feminist intervention in this system has failed to fundamentally improve or change the structure which is power-based and difficult to destabilize

    High LET Radiation Can Enhance TGF(Beta) Induced EMT and Cross-Talk with ATM Pathways

    The TGF(Beta) pathway has been shown to regulate or directly interact with the ATM pathway in the response to radiation in mammary epithelial cells. We investigated possible interactions between the TGF(Beta) and ATM pathways following simulated space radiation using hTERT immortalized human esophageal epithelial cells (EPC-hTERT), mink lung epithelial cells (Mv1lu), and several human fibroblast cell lines. TGF(Beta) is a key modulator of the Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT), important in cancer progression and metastasis. The implication of EMT by radiation also has several lines of developing evidence, however is poorly understood. The identification of TGF(Beta) induced EMT can be shown in changes to morphology, related gene over expression or down regulation, which can be detected by RT-PCR, and immunostaining and western blotting. In this study, we have observed morphologic and molecular alternations consistent with EMT after Mv1lu cells were treated with TGF(Beta) High LET radiation enhanced TGF(Beta) mediated EMT with a dose as low as 0.1Gy. In order to consider the TGF(Beta) interaction with ATM we used a potent ATM inhibitor Ku55933 and investigated gene expression changes and Smad signaling kinetics. Ku559933 was observed to reverse TGF(Beta) induced EMT, while this was not observed in dual treated cells (radiation+TGF(Beta)). In EPC-hTERT cells, TGF(Beta) alone was not able to induce EMT after 3 days of application. A combined treatment with high LET, however, significantly caused the alteration of EMT markers. To study the function of p53 in the process of EMT, we knocked down P53 through RNA interference. Morphology changes associated with EMT were observed in epithelial cells with silenced p53. Our study indicates: high LET radiation can enhance TGF(Beta) induced EMT; while ATM is triggering the process of TGF(Beta)-induced EMT, p53 might be an essential repressor for EMT phenotypes

    Using Video Games to Support Pre-Service Elementary Teachers Learning of Basic Physics Principles

    The purpose of this work is to share our findings in using video gaming technology to facilitate the understanding of basic electromagnetism with preservice elementary teachers. To this end we explored the impact of using a game called Supercharged! on pre-service teachers’ understanding of electromagnetic concepts compared to students who conducted a more traditional inquiry oriented investigation of the same concepts. This study was a part of a larger design experiment examining the pedagogical potential of Supercharged! The control group learned through a series of guided inquiry methods while the experimental group played Supercharged! during the laboratory sections of the science course. There was significant difference F(2,134) = 4.8, p < 0.05, η2=0.59 between the control and experimental groups on the gains from pre-to-post assessment with an effect size of d = 0.72. However, while students in the experimental group performed better than their control group peers, they rated their knowledge of the topic lower than the control group (Mpost-control = 3.0, Mpost-experiment = 2.7), leading to further examination of their laboratory journals. Results of this study show that video games can lead to positive learning outcomes, as demonstrated by the increase in test scores from pre- to post-assessment. Additionally, this study also suggests that a complementary approach, in which video games and hands-on activities are integrated, with each activity informing the other, could be a very powerful technique for supporting student scientific understanding. Further, our findings suggest that video game designers should embed meta-cognitive activities such as reflective opportunities into educational video games to provide scaffolds for students and to reinforce that they are engaged in an educational learning experience

    Evolução do consumo hídrico do morangueiro em cultivo com substrato

    The objective of the present work was to evaluate the evolution of the water consumption of the strawberry cv. Albion in the first cycle cultivated in three commercial substrates. The experiment was carried out in Caçador, SC, in a protected environment. The treatments consisted of three commercial substrates with four replications. The daily water consumption of strawberry plants was evaluated by subtracting the daily volume of nutrient solution applied and the daily volume of nutrient solution drained. The water use efficiency was obtained from the relationship between fruit production and total water consumption during the crop cycle. The highest total water consumption was obtained with two substrates tested, with average consumption, during full fruit harvest, of 267.7 and 259.6mL plant-1 day-1. The daily water consumption during the harvest period is not constant, due to the inconsistency of the climatic conditions, typical of the region of Caçador. This fact makes it difficult to use fixed irrigation frequency and times, often resulting in excessive or deficient irrigation.O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a evolução do consumo hídrico do morangueiro cv. Albion no primeiro ciclo cultivado em três substratos comerciais. O experimento foi conduzido em Caçador, SC, em ambiente protegido. Os tratamentos consistiram em três substratos comercias com quatro repetições. Foram avaliados o consumo hídrico diário das plantas de morangueiro por meio da subtração do volume diário de solução nutritiva aplicada e o volume diário de solução nutritiva drenada. A eficiência do uso da água foi obtida pela relação entre a produção de frutas e o consumo hídrico total durante o ciclo de cultivo. O maior consumo hídrico total foi obtido com dois substratos testados, com um consumo médio, durante a plena colheita de frutas, de 267,7 e 259,6mL planta-1 dia-1. O consumo hídrico diário durante o período de colheita não é constante, devido à inconstância das condições climáticas, típica da região de Caçador. Este fato dificulta o uso de frequência e tempos de irrigação fixos, acarretando muitas vezes em irrigações excessivas ou deficitárias

    Proposing a Transactional Model of eHealth Literacy: Concept Analysis

    Background: Electronic health (eHealth) literacy was conceptualized in 2006 as the ability of internet users to locate, evaluate, and act upon web-based health information. Now, advances in eHealth technology have cultivated transactional opportunities for patients to access, share, and monitor health information. However, empirical evidence shows that existing models and measures of eHealth literacy have limited theoretical underpinnings that reflect the transactional capabilities of eHealth. This paper describes a conceptual model based on the Transactional Model of Communication (TMC), in which eHealth literacy is described as an intrapersonal skillset hypothesized as being dynamic; reciprocal; and shaped by social, relational, and cultural contexts. Objective: The objective of our study was to systematically examine eHealth literacy definitions, models, and measures to propose a refined conceptual and operational definition based on the TMC. Methods: Walker and Avant's concept analysis method was used to guide the systematic review of eHealth literacy definitions (n=10), rating scales (n=6), models (n=4), and peer-reviewed model applications (n=16). Subsequent cluster analyses showed salient themes across definitions. Dimensions, antecedents, and consequences reflected in models and measures were extracted and deductively analyzed based on codes consistent with the TMC. Results: Systematic review evidence revealed incongruity between operational eHealth literacy included in definitions compared with literacies included within models and measures. Theoretical underpinnings of eHealth literacy also remain dismal. Despite the transactional capabilities of eHealth, the role of "communication" in eHealth literacy remains underdeveloped and does not account for physical and cognitive processing abilities necessary for multiway transactions. Conclusions: The Transactional Model of eHealth Literacy and a corresponding definition are proposed. In this novel model, eHealth literacy comprises a hierarchical intrapersonal skillset that mediates the reciprocal effect of contextual factors (ie, user oriented and task oriented) on patient engagement in health care. More specifically, the intrapersonal skillset counteracts the negative effect of "noise" (or impediments) produced by social and relational contexts. Cutting across health and technology literacies, the intrapersonal skillset of eHealth literacy is operationalized through four literacies that correspond with discrete operative skills: (1) functional (ie, locate and understand); (2) communicative (ie, exchange); (3) critical (ie, evaluate); and (4) translational (ie, apply)

    Biochemical Kinetics Model of DSB Repair and GammaH2AX FOCI by Non-homologous End Joining

    We developed a biochemical kinetics approach to describe the repair of double strand breaks (DSB) produced by low LET radiation by modeling molecular events associated with the mechanisms of non-homologous end-joining (NHEJ). A system of coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations describes the induction of DSB and activation pathways for major NHEJ components including Ku(sub 70/80), DNA-PK(sub cs), and the Ligase IV-XRCC4 hetero-dimer. The autophosphorylation of DNA-PK(sub cs and subsequent induction of gamma-H2AX foci observed after ionizing radiation exposure were modeled. A two-step model of DNA-PK(sub cs) regulation of repair was developed with the initial step allowing access of other NHEJ components to breaks, and a second step limiting access to Ligase IV-XRCC4. Our model assumes that the transition from the first to second-step depends on DSB complexity, with a much slower-rate for complex DSB. The model faithfully reproduced several experimental data sets, including DSB rejoining as measured by pulsed-field electrophoresis (PFGE), quantification of the induction of gamma-H2AX foci, and live cell imaging of the induction of Ku(sub 70/80). Predictions are made for the behaviors of NHEJ components at low doses and dose-rates, where a steady-state is found at dose-rates of 0.1 Gy/hr or lower

    LEGUS Discovery of a Light Echo Around Supernova 2012aw

    We have discovered a luminous light echo around the normal Type II-Plateau Supernova (SN) 2012aw in Messier 95 (M95; NGC 3351), detected in images obtained approximately two years after explosion with the Wide Field Channel 3 on-board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) by the Legacy ExtraGalactic Ultraviolet Survey (LEGUS). The multi-band observations span from the near-ultraviolet through the optical (F275W, F336W, F438W, F555W, and F814W). The apparent brightness of the echo at the time was ~21--22 mag in all of these bands. The echo appears circular, although less obviously as a ring, with an inhomogeneous surface brightness, in particular, a prominent enhanced brightness to the southeast. The SN itself was still detectable, particularly in the redder bands. We are able to model the light echo as the time-integrated SN light scattered off of diffuse interstellar dust in the SN environment. We have assumed that this dust is analogous to that in the Milky Way with R_V=3.1. The SN light curves that we consider also include models of the unobserved early burst of light from the SN shock breakout. Our analysis of the echo suggests that the distance from the SN to the scattering dust elements along the echo is ~45 pc. The implied visual extinction for the echo-producing dust is consistent with estimates made previously from the SN itself. Finally, our estimate of the SN brightness in F814W is fainter than that measured for the red supergiant star at the precise SN location in pre-SN images, possibly indicating that the star has vanished and confirming it as the likely SN progenitor.Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures, to appear in the Astrophysical Journa
