    School leadership innovations and creativity: The case of communication between school and parents

    AbstractIn this work we examine how the creativity of the school leaders improves the relationships between school and parents through the innovations. Our study is based on a quantitative approach to the issue through interviews with 6 headmasters of primary schools (3 in Greece and 3 in Cyprus) and 18 parents (3 of each school, one mother and two fathers).The results showed that the creativity of the school headmaster or school principal is a main factor to establish a strong communication based between school and parents. School leader has the power to “meet parents where they are” and none parent be exclusive from school life

    Disease association and comparative genomics of compositional bias in human proteins [version 2; peer review: 2 approved]

    Background: The evolutionary rate of disordered protein regions varies greatly due to the lack of structural constraints. So far, few studies have investigated the presence/absence patterns of compositional bias, indicative of disorder, across phylogenies in conjunction with human disease. In this study, we report a genome-wide analysis of compositional bias association with disease in human proteins and their taxonomic distribution. Methods: The human genome protein set provided by the Ensembl database was annotated and analysed with respect to both disease associations and the detection of compositional bias. The Uniprot Reference Proteome dataset, containing 11297 proteomes was used as target dataset for the comparative genomics of a well-defined subset of the Human Genome, including 100 characteristic, compositionally biased proteins, some linked to disease. Results: Cross-evaluation of compositional bias and disease-association in the human genome reveals a significant bias towards biased regions in disease-associated genes, with charged, hydrophilic amino acids appearing as over-represented. The phylogenetic profiling of 17 disease-associated, proteins with compositional bias across 11297 proteomes captures characteristic taxonomic distribution patterns. Conclusions: This is the first time that a combined genome-wide analysis of compositional bias, disease-association and taxonomic distribution of human proteins is reported, covering structural, functional, and evolutionary properties. The reported framework can form the basis for large-scale, follow-up projects, encompassing the entire human genome and all known gene-disease associations

    Reporting new cases of anaemia in primary care settings in Crete, Greece: a rural practice study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Early diagnosis of anaemia represents an important task within primary care settings. This study reports on the frequency of new cases of anaemia among patients attending rural primary care settings in Crete (Greece) and to offer an estimate of iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) frequency in this study group.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>All patients attending the rural primary health care units of twelve general practitioners (GPs) on the island of Crete for ten consecutive working days were eligible to participate in this study. Hemoglobin (Hb) levels were measured by portable analyzers. Laboratory tests to confirm new cases of anaemia were performed at the University General Hospital of Heraklion.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>One hundred and thirteen out of 541 recruited patients had a low value of Hb according to the initial measurement obtained by the use of the portable analyzer. Forty five (45.5%) of the 99 subjects who underwent laboratory testing had confirmed anaemia. The mean value of the Hb levels in the group with confirmed anaemia, as detected by the portable analyzer was 11.1 g/dl (95% Confidence Interval (CI) from 10.9 to 11.4) and the respective mean value of the Hb levels obtained from the full blood count was 11.4 g/dl (95% CI from 11.2 to 11.7) (<it>P </it>= 0.01). Sixteen out of those 45 patients with anaemia (35.6%) had IDA, with ferritin levels lower than 30 ng/ml.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Keeping in mind that this paper does not deal with specificity or sensitivity figures, it is suggested that in rural and remote settings anaemia is still invisible and point of care testing may have a place to identify it.</p

    Effects of dietary substitution of fishmeal by black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) meal on growth performance, whole-body chemical composition, and fatty acid profile of Pontastacus leptodactylus juveniles

    Freshwater crayfish are considered as aquatic products of high quality and high nutritional value. The increasing demand has led to populations reduction in several locations throughout their range. Thus, the development of appropriate rearing conditions is considered necessary, among which, optimization of their diet is a basic part. Towards this direction, in the present study, a 98-day feeding trial was carried out to evaluate the impact of dietary fishmeal substitution by Hermetia illucens meal on Pontastacus leptodactylus juveniles kept under laboratory conditions. Insect meals represent an environmentally friendly alternative solution, considered as a high-value feed source, rich in nutrients such as protein and fat. Three dietary regimens were utilized with a fishmeal-based without Hermetia meal (HM) defined as the control diet (HM0), and two diets, the first with 50% (HM50) and the second with 100% (HM100) of fishmeal substitution by HM, respectively. Growth performance, whole-body composition, and fatty acid profiles of individuals were studied in the different treatments. At the end of the feeding trial, statistically significant differences were observed in the mean survival rate (SR), specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and weight gain (WG) values. More specifically, animals fed with HM-based diets had higher mean SR, while the control group performed better regarding FCR and SGR. The HM inclusion in the diet significantly altered the whole-body chemical composition of the crayfish signifying a different metabolic utilization compared to fishmeal (FM). The fatty acid analysis revealed that 16:0 (palmitic acid) was the predominant saturated fatty acid (SFA), 18:1ω9 (oleic acid) was found to be the main monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA), while 18:2ω6 (linoleic acid) represented the major polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) followed by C20:3 cis ω3 (cis-11-14-17-eicosatrienoate) and C22:6 cis ω3 (cis-4,7,10,13,16,19-Docosahexaenoic) fatty acids. The inclusion of dietary HM significantly reduced the contents of ∑SFAs, ∑PUFAs and ∑ω6 fatty acids, as well as those of C22:6 cis ω3 and increased the ω6/ω3 and hypocholesterolemic to hypercholesterolemic ratios in the body. In parallel with improvements in balanced diets and in culture conditions that need to be optimised for rearing of freshwater crayfish, our study provides new data that enlighten the suitability of insect meals in the nutrition of P. leptodactylus

    Innovation networking within Producer Groups (PGs): The case of two PGs in Ierapetra, Crete

    The current paper aims at exploring innovation networking practices among the members of two Producer Groups (PGs) in Ierapetra area, Crete. Results show that the first PG’s members are better incorporated in the PG’s innovation network(s) as well as that its leaders are conceived of as innovators. On the contrary, the innovation network of the second PG is highly fragmented and dependent on the leaders of the first PG. These results have implications in terms of the PGs’ innovation capacity as well as of extension work, especially with a view to current developments in both Greece and the EU

    Wine is an alcoholic beverage of complex composition obtained through the fermentation of grape must. The consumption of wine has already been associated with a multitude of beneficial effects due to its high polyphenolic content. In this study, four Greek emblematic wines from two red (i.e., Xinomavro and Agiorgitiko) and two white (i.e., Assyrtiko and Malagouzia) varieties were analyzed for the estimation of their antioxidant profiles. To address this question, we assessed their ability to scavenge both synthetic and endogenous free radicals, such as DPPH•, ABTS+•, OH•, O2−, their potential reducing power, and their antimutagenic and antigenotoxic properties. All varieties exhibited potent antioxidant activity, as indicated by the results of methods above, with the red wines appearing more effective than the white ones regarding antioxidant capacity. Our small-scale study is the first to reveal that these wine varieties may have the ability to scavenge the most reactive endogenous radicals. In the future, this finding must be accompanied by larger studies to fill a knowledge gap in the scientific literature concerning a holistic approach of the in vitro antioxidant action of plant polyphenolic compounds. Conclusively, we believe that wines possess high bioactivity that allow them to settle in the industry of food additives and medicinal products
