Contextualization:  The andean blackberry (Rubus glaucus Benth) is one of the fruits of greater commercialization and importance in Colombia and in the entire Andean zone. This crop is affected by E. colombianus, an insect pest present in blackberry and other crops such as tree tomato, lulo, grape among others. Knowledge gap: The effectiveness of biocontrol agents in controlling E. colombianus under field conditions is not known. Purpose: Evaluate the effectiveness of the native biocontrol agents Metarhizium robertsii and Isaria fumosorosea using commercial products with two application methods. Methodology: The research was carried out at the Altamira Farm, in the municipality of Guacarí (Valle del Cauca), located at 2 990 meters above sea level. 120 plants were selected, and sample of individuals of E. colombianus was taken for reactivation of the fungi in the laboratory.  Additionally, the initial population was evaluated, before applying the treatments, in an experimental design of subdivided plots with a 4 x 2 x 3 factorial arrangement. Later, evaluations were carried out every eight days from the month of the first application, and over a period of a month and a half. Results and conclusions: The average initial population of E. colombianus was about 31 individuals, at different stages, in the 120 plants. The most frequently found stages were the first and second, from the root neck to a depth of 80 to 120 cm. The treatment and method that had the greatest effectiveness on E. colombianus was Metarhizium robertsii applied with an injector, which caused an average of 78 % of dead individuals, followed by I. fumosorosea with an average of 75 %. In contrast, the M. robertsii treatment applied. With a pump was the one that presented the lowest average number of individuals, with a total of 17% of individuals killed by the fungi after 45 days.

    No full text
In urological oncology, the diagnosis of teratoma with a somatic-like malignant component refers to the presence of a malignant neoplasm, e.g. carcinoma or sarcoma, either within a teratoma of the genital tract (usually the testis) or, more commonly, in a metastasis, following initial cisplatin therapy. The somatic-type malignancy (STM) most widely observed in germ cell tumors (GCT) is rhabdomyosarcoma; neuroendocrine carcinoma is extremely rare

The proyect focusses on the construction of acustic guitars, and proposes workshops where the disabled soldiers can develop physical, and cognitive skills as well as techniques to improve their social conditions

Metanephric adenoma: Molecular study and review of the literature

    No full text
Introduction: Metanephric adenoma (MA) is an uncommon benign tumor accounting for 0.2–0.7% of adult renal epithelial neoplasms. The clinical course is often indolent, but diagnosis should not be delayed since clinical symptoms (hematuria, fever, palpable abdominal mass, and flank pain) may be non-specific and overlap with those of a malign renal neoplasm. We report on 4 cases of AM, for which morphological and mutational analysis were performed. Material and Methods: Immunohistochemical staining was performed on sections cut from paraffin blocks to assess expression of WT1, vimentin, racemase, CK7, CD10 and RCC. Testing for the BRAF gene mutation V600 was carried out using real-time PCR (Cobas® 4800). Results: In all four cases, tumors were visible as well-circumscribed, non encapsulated masses located in the renal cortex and extending towards the medulla. At immunohistochemical examination, tumor cells stained negative for CK7, CD10 and RCC and positive for both WT1 (nuclear, intense) and vimentin (cytoplasmic, intense, and diffuse). Molecular analysis revealed the BRAF gene mutation V600E in three cases and wild-type BRAF in the fourth. Conclusions: BRAF molecular mutation analysis may aid diagnosis in cases with atypical histological features, especially in small incisional biopsies when reassessment of surgical treatment may be considered

New Insights into the Role of the Immune Microenvironment in Breast Carcinoma

Recently, immune edition has been recognized as a new hallmark of cancer. In this respect, some clinical trials in breast cancer have reported imppressive outcomes related to laboratory immune findings, especially in the neoadjuvant and metastatic setting. Infiltration by tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TIL) and their subtypes, tumor-associated macrophages (TAM) and myeloid-derived suppressive cells (MDSC) seem bona fide prognostic and even predictive biomarkers, that will eventually be incorporated into diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms of breast cancer. In addition, the complex interaction of costimulatory and coinhibitory molecules on the immune synapse and the different signals that they may exert represent another exciting field to explore. In this review we try to summarize and elucidate these new concepts and knowledge from a translational perspective focusing on breast cancer, paying special attention to those aspects that might have more significance in clinical practice and could be useful to design successful therapeutic strategies in the future

Biodiversity 2016. Status and Trends of Colombian Continental Biodiversity

    No full text
This third volume of the annual report on biodiversity in Colombia continues the editorial line that begun in 2014. Using novel analytical and graphic proposals, these reports have the goal of communicating the contents to a broad public, making it available for discussion without sacrificing the quality of information. The challenge of communication continues to be a major part of the institutional project, and the new languages with which we are learning to communicate with society and other institutions are an experiment that we expect to be increasingly gratifying. The report for 2017 is already under construction and it counts on new digital technologies so the power of a colombian vital connection may be entirely expressed. The included content evidences that we are still far away from having a systematic follow-up about most of the topics related to the management of biodiversity and ecosystem services, which is the only way to evaluate the effectiveness of policies and investments made by society. In fact, a limitation that is recognized is that of identifying positive or negative changes that affect different levels of organization of life on this planet; therefore, our global navigation route of the Aichi targets is still to be verified. An additional purpose of this process includes the invitation of all Colombians to contribute in constructing and maintaining basic monitoring indicators for management since it is impossible to identify long-term trends of flora and fauna in the country without the support of institutions, researchers, and citizens. This challenge is immense in a megadiverse country such as Colombia. For this reason, the report will continue to open its pages to experts, and even indigenous peoples or local communities, for them to present their perspectives about environmental change and its effects on biodiversity in a systematic and documented manner. This has the objective of stimulating the commitment of everyone in the management of biodiversity and ecosystem services. The only way of overcoming the risk of extinction is through the active process of social learning in which all sectors assume a part of the complex responsibility in protecting the forms of life of the country, a roughly counted tenth of all creatures on Earth. I thank all the people that contributed in this Report, those who have supported us in the phases of production, and all readers and users, who are the ultimate judges of its utility.Bogotá, D. C
