    Brand gender and consumer-based brand equity on Facebook: The mediating role of consumer-brand engagement and brand love

    Brand gender has been suggested as a relevant source of consumer-based brand equity (CBBE). The purpose of this paper is to deepen understanding of the relationship between brand gender and CBBE by analyzing the mediating roleofconsumer–brandengagement (CBE)andbrandlove(BL)onthisrelationship.Thisresearchwas conducted on Facebook, the dominant global social media platform. The hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling. Results support 6 of the 9 hypotheses, with a significant relationship between analyzed constructs. This study advances prior work by showing that brand gender has an indirect and relevant impact on CBBE through BL and CBE. Therefore, this research confirms the advantages of clear gender positioning and extends prior research by suggesting that brands with a strong gender identity will encourage BL and CB

    The Globular Cluster System of the Coma cD Galaxy NGC 4874 from Hubble Space Telescope ACS and WFC3/IR Imaging

    We present new HST optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry of the rich globular cluster (GC) system of NGC 4874, the cD galaxy in the core of the Coma cluster (Abell 1656). NGC 4874 was observed with the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys in the F475W (g) and F814W (I) passbands and the Wide Field Camera 3 IR Channel in F160W (H). The GCs in this field exhibit a bimodal optical color distribution with more than half of the GCs falling on the red side at g-I > 1. Bimodality is also present, though less conspicuously, in the optical-NIR I-H color. Consistent with past work, we find evidence for nonlinearity in the g-I versus I-H color-color relation. Our results thus underscore the need for understanding the detailed form of the color-metallicity relations in interpreting observational data on GC bimodality. We also find a very strong color-magnitude trend, or "blue tilt," for the blue component of the optical color distribution of the NGC 4874 GC system. A similarly strong trend is present for the overall mean I-H color as a function of magnitude; for M_814 < -10 mag, these trends imply a steep mass-metallicity scaling with ZMGC1.4±0.4Z\propto M_{\rm GC}^{1.4\pm0.4}, but the scaling is not a simple power law and becomes much weaker at lower masses. As in other similar systems, the spatial distribution of the blue GCs is more extended than that of the red GCs, partly because of blue GCs associated with surrounding cluster galaxies. In addition, the center of the GC system is displaced by 4+/-1 kpc towards the southwest from the luminosity center of NGC 4874, in the direction of NGC 4872. Finally, we remark on a dwarf elliptical galaxy with a noticeably asymmetrical GC distribution. Interestingly, this dwarf has a velocity of nearly -3000 km/s with respect to NGC 4874; we suggest it is on its first infall into the cluster core and is undergoing stripping of its GC system by the cluster potential.Comment: 24 pages, 20 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    Different risk profiles for progression of nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy: a 2-year study

    Characterization of 2-year progression of different risk phenotypes in eyes with mild and moderate nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR) in type 2 diabetes (T2D). A 2-year prospective longitudinal cohort study (CORDIS, NCT03696810) was conducted. Ophthalmological examinations were performed including best corrected visual acuity, color fundus photography and optical coherence tomography (OCT and OCTA). OCT metrics, central retinal thickness and ganglion cell layer + inner plexiform layer (GCL + IPL) thickness were analyzed. OCTA metrics, vessel density (VD), perfusion density (PD) and area of intercapillary spaces (AIS) were obtained from superficial and deep capillary plexus (SCP, DCP). Only phenotype C identified by decreased VD ≥ 2 SD of healthy controls and phenotype B identified by subclinical macular edema with decreased VD < 2 SD of healthy controls were included. One hundred twenty-two eyes from T2D individuals were included in study; 65 eyes (53%) were classified as phenotype B and 57 eyes (47%) as phenotype C. For phenotype B, progression was associated with thinning of the GCL + IPL (ETDRS 35, 1 year p = 0.013, 2 year p < 0.001; ETDRS 43–47, 2 year p = 0.003) and vessel closure involving mainly the DCP for both ETDRS grades (ETDRS 35, 1 year p = 0.025, 2 year p = 0.034; ETDRS 43–47, 1 year p = 0.011). For phenotype C there was also progressive thinning of the GCL + IPL (ETDRS 35, in both years p ≤ 0.001; ETDRS 43–47, 1 year p = 0.002, 2 year p = 0.001), with vessel closure involving mainly SCP (ETDRS 35, 1 year p = 0.012, 2 year p = 0.023 in full-retina), which appeared to stabilize at maximal values in ETDRS grade 43–47 at the end of 2 years. ETDRS severity changes at the end of the 2-year period showed that worsening was associated with phenotype C with changes involving predominantly the SCP (VD, p = 0.005; PD, p = 0.008; AIS, p = 0.005).     Natural origin scaffolds with in situ pore forming capability for bone tissue engineering applications

    This work describes the development of a biodegradable matrix, based on chitosan and starch, with the ability to form a porous structure in situ due to the attack by specific enzymes present in the human body (a-amylase and lysozyme). Scaffolds with three different compositions were developed: chitosan (C100) and chitosan/starch (CS80-20, CS60-40). Compressive test results showed that these materials exhibit very promising mechanical properties, namely a high modulus in both the dry and wet states. The compressive modulus in the dry state for C100 was 580 ± 33 MPa, CS80-20 (402 ± 62 MPa) and CS60-40 (337 ± 78 MPa). Degradation studies were performed using a-amylase and/or lysozyme at concentrations similar to those found in human serum, at 37 C for up to 90 days. Scanning electron micrographs showed that enzymatic degradation caused a porous structure to be formed, indicating the potential of this methodology to obtain in situ forming scaffolds. In order to evaluate the biocompatibility of the scaffolds, extracts and direct contact tests were performed. Results with the MTT test showed that the extracts of the materials were clearly non-toxic to L929 fibroblast cells. Analysis of cell adhesion and morphology of seeded osteoblastic-like cells in direct contact tests showed that at day 7 the number of cells on CS80-20 and CS60-40 was noticeably higher than that on C100, which suggests that starch containing materials may promote cell adhesion and proliferation.     Carbon nanotubes based multi-directional strain sensor

    In this work a new carbon nanotubes (CNT) based multi-directional strain sensor capable of quantifying and indicate strain direction is foreseen. This work investigates the electromechanical behavior of an aligned CNT sensing patch strained at 45◦ in order to validate its multi-directional sensing capability. Vertically aligned CNT forests are produced by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and then mechanically knocked down onto polyimide (PI) films. Two configurations, diamond (D sample) and square (Sq sample), are considered. The relative electrical resistance (ΔR/R0) and the electrical anisotropy (RB/RA) upon strain increments are analyzed and compared to previous work results (0◦ and 90◦ strain direction). Both 45◦ samples, D and Sq, are sensitive to strain. A correlation between electrical anisotropy behavior and strain direction (0◦, 45◦ and 90◦) is established.     Electrochemical miRNA-34a-based biosensor for the diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease

    Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common dementia type and a leading cause of death and disability in the elderly. Diagnosis is expensive and invasive, urging the development of new, affordable, and less invasive diagnostic tools. The identification of changes in the expression of non-coding RNAs prompts the development of diagnostic tools to detect disease-specific blood biomarkers. Building on this idea, this work reports a novel electrochemical microRNA (miRNA) biosensor for the diagnosis of AD, based on carbon screen-printed electrodes (C-SPEs) modified with two gold nanostructures and a complementary anti-miR-34a oligonucleotide probe. This biosensor showed good target affinity, reflected on a 100 pM to 1 M linearity range and a limit of detection (LOD) of 39 pM in buffer and 94 aM in serum. Moreover, the biosensors response was not affected by serum compounds, indicating selectivity for miR-34a. The biosensor also detected miR-34a in the cell culture medium of a common AD model, stimulated with a neurotoxin to increase miR-34a secretion.     Kinetics of Eucalypt Lignosulfonate Oxidation to Aromatic Aldehydes by Oxygen in Alkaline Medium

    The oxidation kinetics of lignosulfonates (LS) from acidic magnesium-based sulfite pulping of Eucalyptus globulus wood with oxygen under alkaline conditions was studied. The analysis of oxidation products in the reaction system O(2)/NaOH revealed a predominance of aromatic aldehydes (vanillin and syringic aldehyde) though small amounts of vanillic and syringic acids and acetophenone/phenylacetaldehyde derivatives have also been detected. The rate constant of syringic aldehyde formation was roughly twice of that for vanillin. The effective activation energies for the oxidation of LS to aromatic aldehydes (ca. 60-70 kJ/mol) were rather different to those found for the formation of aromatic acids (ca. 110 kJ/mol) indicating different mechanisms involved in the rate-determining reaction step. The addition of catalyst (copper salt, 20% w/w) promoted the LS oxidation with increments of aromatic aldehyde yields by 25-50%. The maximum yields of syringic aldehyde and vanillin upon LS oxidation were 16.1 and 4.5%, respectively (150 degrees C, 20 min, P(O2) = 10 bar, 0.9 M NaOH solution).     Parent's reports of lexical and grammatical aspects of toddlers's language in European Portuguese: developmental trends, age and gender differences

    The results from a large-scale study on toddlers’ language acquisition in European Portuguese are presented. Toddlers’ lexical and grammatical competencies were assessed using the MacArthur–Bates Communicative Development Inventory: Words and Sentences. The results, based on 3012 reports completed by parents, indicate an increase in the lexical size and on five measures of grammatical development (production of regular morphology, irregular morphology, over-regularizations, mean length of utterances and sentence complexity) across age groups. A main effect of gender was found for lexical size, production of regular and irregular morphology, production of over-regularizations and sentence complexity, with girls obtaining overall higher scores than boys. All lexical and grammatical development measures are positively correlated, even after controlling for age and gender effects.
