Banks’ capital, regulation and the financial crisis

This paper investigates whether regulatory capital requirements play an important role in determining banks’ equity capital. We estimate equity capital regressions using panel data of a sample of 560 banks for 2004-2010. Our results suggest that regulatory capital requirements are not first order determinants of banks’ capital structure. We document differences on the effect of most factors on banks’ share of equity according to the type of bank and to the region of the bank. Finally, we show that the determinants of this share are sensitive to the recent international financial crisis and to a set of regulatory country factors.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A core ontology for business process analysis

Business Process Management (BPM) aims at supporting the whole life-cycle necessary to deploy and maintain business processes in organisations. An important step of the BPM life-cycle is the analysis of the processes deployed in companies. However, the degree of automation currently achieved cannot support the level of adaptation required by businesses. Initial steps have been performed towards including some sort of automated reasoning within Business Process Analysis (BPA) but this is typically limited to using taxonomies. We present a core ontology aimed at enhancing the state of the art in BPA. The ontology builds upon a Time Ontology and is structured around the process, resource, and object perspectives as typically adopted when analysing business processes. The ontology has been extended and validated by means of an Events Ontology and an Events Analysis Ontology aimed at capturing the audit trails generated by Process-Aware Information Systems and deriving additional knowledge

Simulations of phytoplankton dynamics in El Gergal Reservoir, Southern Spain (PROTECH)

The Mediterranean region is characterised by a variable climate with most of the rain falling during the winter and frequent summer droughts. Such warm, dry periods are ideal for the growth of large algal blooms that often consist of potentially toxic Cyanobacteria. This makes the management of water for human use particularly challenging in such a climate and it is important to understand how such blooms can be avoided or at least be reduced in size. PROTECH (Phytoplankton RespOnses To Environmental CHange) is a model that simulates the dynamics of different species of phytoplankton populations in lakes and reservoirs. Its distinct advantage over similar models is its ability to simulate the relative composition of the algal flora, allowing both quantitative and qualitative conclusions to be drawn e.g. whether Cyanobacteria could be a potential problem. PROTECH has been applied primarily to lakes and reservoirs in northern Europe. Recently, however, the model has been applied to water bodies in lower latitudes, including Australia to a water supply reservoir in the south of Spain, El Gergal. El Gergal is the last in a chain of reservoirs that supply water to the city of Seville. It was brought into service in April 1979 and has a maximum storage volume of 35 000 000 m3. This article summarises the application of PROTECH in order to simulate the following problems: • the effect of a large influx of Ceratium biomass into El Gergal from another reservoir • the effect of using alternative water sources instead of the Guadalquivir River (used occasionally to raise water levels in El Gergal) • the effect of installing tertiary sewage treatment on the Cala River • the effect of simulated drought conditions on phytoplankton in the reservoir

Modiano ou l’art de la mémoire: une perspective post-mémorielle de l’occupation allemande

Récompensé par le Prix Nobel de littérature pour «l’art de la mémoire avec lequel il a évoqué les destinées humaines les plus insaisissables et dévoilé le monde de l’Occupation», Patrick Modiano a éblouit l’académie suédoise par cette obsession. Dans un récit passé et présent, imaginaire et fiction, proche et étranger à lui-même, l’auteur a choisi l’époque de l’Occupation allemande en France comme cadre de la plupart de ses romans, il en fait d’ailleurs référence dans le journal Le Monde daté du 24 mai 1973: «Si je recours à l’Occupation, c’est parce qu’elle me fournit le climat idéal». Nous nous proposons de questionner la légitimité de ce choix. Comment peut-il s’inscrire dans la liste des témoins vu qu’il est né à la fin de la guerre, vu qu’il n’a pas vécu la violence de la guerre, la barbarie concentrationnaire, la brutalité de la Shoah, la perte d’identité. Son premier roman La place de l’Étoile où l’on retrouve les thèmes récurrents de la guerre, de la collaboration, du judaïsme, de l’inguérissable blessure de l’antisémitisme, nous renvoie à cette époque. Nostalgie d’un âge d’or: où sont passés les intellos?

De qui parle-t-on avec tant de déception, avec tant de désarroi… De la figure de l’intellectuel critique, l’intellectuel universel engagé dont l’image se dilue dès la sortie de scène d’hommes considérés des maitres à penser comme Sartre, Foucault, Aron, Bourdieu… Notre réflexion porte, essentiellement, sur une tentative de compréhension de cette transformation qui envisage de substituer l’intellectuel universel par l’intellectuel spécifique autrement dit par une culture d’expert, d’êtres spécialisés. Nous nous hasarderons dans cette nouvelle culture afin de percevoir si l’expression de toute pensée critique est devenue improbable. Nous faisons ici référence à cette pensée réduite à une diffusion exigüe contre un marché pris par l’envol des médias qui vient approfondir le faussé entre l’intellectuel universel et le spécifique comme le nommait Foucault
