    The Data Dilemma

    Presented by Amy Stout at ASEE Annual Conference, June 24-27, 2007, Honolulu, HIThere’s a famous allegory about a map of the world that grows in detail until every point in reality has its counterpoint on paper; the twist being that such a map is at once ideally accurate and entirely useless, since it’s the same size as the thing it’s meant to represent 1. Introduction The proliferation of scientific data is inspiring a paradigm shift in the way we manage information. Scientists frequently use other scientists’ data for their experiments 2, taking a step out of the traditional process known as the scientific method 3. As data is rapidly produced and shared, the results of experiments are practically becoming disseminated as they are collected, speeding up a process that used to take longer 4. With such a wealth of data available, information retrieval has become a critical component of scientific research. Tools like metadata, sophisticated databases and search engines are desperately trying to keep pace with the changing world 5. Furthermore, there are social and legal issues to consider. What data can be shared and disseminated? Who owns data? What about “facts” that have been extracted from years of experimentation or using patented devices? Traditionally, so-called facts have not been copyrightable, resulting in laws that become blurred 6. Another issue affecting data management is how to handle data as an object. Librarians are used to the book/journal model 7. Open Access, a movement that started in the early 1990s in an effort to make published articles freely available to the public, is now extending its reach to data 8. As part of a task force at MIT, librarians interviewed researchers to get their perspectives on data, with the goal of gathering ideas on how to assist the researchers. In addition, librarians are submitting a data set to MIT’s institutional repository, DSpace, in an effort to investigate the technical challenges presented by data storage. This experience will provide insight into the technical and social issues librarians can address with expertise. As librarians become more skilled with data management, they will be able to better advise and assist scientists, opening up new collaborations between librarians and their academic communities.MIT Librarie

    Nurses care for individuals, families, communities, states, nations, and the health of the planet. While developing relationships with those for whom they care, nurses also develop relationships with and partner with other interdisciplinary team members to impact policies to improve health for all. The 4.2 million nurses across the United States are uniquely positioned to address health-care needs alongside their interdisciplinary colleagues. This article provides a template for educating about policy so that nurses and other interdisciplinary team members learn how to address health-care topics at the policy level in partnership with one another.

    Elliptic curves, modular forms, and sums of Hurwitz class numbers

    Let H(N) denote the Hurwitz class number. It is known that if pp is a prime, then {equation*} \sum_{|r|<2\sqrt p}H(4p-r^2) = 2p. {equation*} In this paper, we investigate the behavior of this sum with the additional condition r≡c(modm)r\equiv c\pmod m. Three different methods will be explored for determining the values of such sums. First, we will count isomorphism classes of elliptic curves over finite fields. Second, we will express the sums as coefficients of modular forms. Third, we will manipulate the Eichler-Selberg trace for ula for Hecke operators to obtain Hurwitz class number relations.     User Needs Assessment of Information Seeking Activities of MIT Students - Spring 2006

    The SFX/Verde Group was authorized to complete a user needs assessment in the form of a Photo Diary Study with MIT students in the spring of 2006. The goal of the study was to inform the MIT Libraries of online tool improvements that should be implemented to meet our most pressing user needs. Sixteen graduate students and sixteen undergraduate students participated in offering a fascinating glimpse into the information-seeking aspects of their academic lives. The team categorized user behaviors into goals and tasks and then analyzed the 277 goals and tasks and the 507 methods shared with us by the students in the study. The study yielded the following priorities for the Libraries' online tools: Make discovery easier and more effective. Incorporate trusted networks in finding tools. Continue to put links to the Libraries' services and resources where the users are. The study also showed that the students used a variety of highly successful strategies for performing quick lookups of information and finding specific known items. Finally, while the assessment focused on aspects of the students' work related to online tools, it also yielded rich information that could be useful in improving other aspects of the Libraries' services

    Profiling of Tumour-Infiltrating Lymphocytes and Tumour-Associated Macrophages in Ovarian Epithelial Cancer:Relation to Tumour Characteristics and Impact on Prognosis

    Early evidence suggests a strong impact of tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) on both the prognosis and clinical behaviour of ovarian cancer. Proven associations, however, have not yet translated to successful immunotherapies and further work in the field is urgently needed. We aimed to analyse the tumour microenvironment of a well-characterised cohort of ovarian cancer samples. Tumour markers were selected owing to their comparative underrepresentation in the current literature. Paraffin-embedded, formalin-fixed tumour tissue blocks of 138 patients representative of the population and including early stage disease were identified, stained for CD3, CD20, CD68 and CD163 and analysed for both the stromal and intertumoral components. Data were statistically analysed in relation to clinical details, histological subtype, borderline vs. malignant status, survival and management received. Mean stromal CD3, total CD3 count, mean stromal CD20 and total CD20 count all correlated negatively with survival. Malignant ovarian tumours consistently demonstrated significantly higher infiltration of all analysed immune cells than borderline tumours. Assessment of the stromal compartment produced a considerably higher proportion of significant results when compared to the intra-tumoural infiltrates. Customary assessment of solely intra-tumoural cells in advanced stage disease patients undergoing primary debulking surgery should be challenged, with recommendations for future scoring systems provided

    The deletion of the ORF1 and ORF71 genes reduces virulence of the neuropathogenic EHV-1 strain Ab4 without compromising host immunity in horses

    The equine herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) ORF1 and ORF71 genes have immune modulatory effects in vitro. Experimental infection of horses using virus mutants with multiple deletions including ORF1 and ORF71 showed promise as vaccine candidates against EHV-1. Here, the combined effects of ORF1 and ORF71 deletions from the neuropathogenic EHV-1 strain Ab4 on clinical disease and host immune response were further explored. Three groups of EHV-1 naïve horses were experimentally infected with the ORF1/71 gene deletion mutant (Ab4ΔORF1/71), the parent Ab4 strain, or remained uninfected. In comparison to Ab4, horses infected with Ab4ΔORF1/71 did not show the initial high fever peak characteristic of EHV-1 infection. Ab4ΔORF1/71 infection had reduced nasal shedding (1/5 vs. 5/5) and, simultaneously, decreased intranasal interferon (IFN)-α, interleukin (IL)-10 and soluble CD14 secretion. However, Ab4 and Ab4ΔORF1/71 infection resulted in comparable viremia, suggesting these genes do not regulate the infection of the mononuclear cells and subsequent viremia. Intranasal and serum anti-EHV-1 antibodies to Ab4ΔORF1/71 developed slightly slower than those to Ab4. However, beyond day 12 post infection (d12pi) serum antibodies in both virus-infected groups were similar and remained increased until the end of the study (d114pi). EHV-1 immunoglobulin (Ig) G isotype responses were dominated by short-lasting IgG1 and long-lasting IgG4/7 antibodies. The IgG4/7 response closely resembled the total EHV-1 specific antibody response. Ex vivo re-stimulation of PBMC with Ab4 resulted in IFN-γ and IL-10 secretion by cells from both infected groups within two weeks pi. Flow cytometric analysis showed that IFN-γ producing EHV-1-specific T-cells were mainly CD8+/IFN-γ+ and detectable from d32pi on. Peripheral blood IFN-γ+ T-cell percentages were similar in both infected groups, albeit at low frequency (~0.1%). In summary, the Ab4ΔORF1/71 gene deletion mutant is less virulent but induced antibody responses and cellular immunity similar to the parent Ab4 strain
