Character Strengths are Prominent as Mate Preferences of Turkish Students
This study addressed the traits and characteristics that Turkish students deem most important in a long-term romantic partner. We collected quantitative and qualitative data on characteristics desired in romantic partners from students attending Bahçeşehir Üniversitesi in Istanbul, Turkey. Like our previous cross-cultural studies conducted in Japan, Russia and the United States, results supported dependability and love as the most important traits. Overall, positive internal attributes were rated as highly important and we recommend the traits associated with the positive psychology movement be more fully considered in future studies on mate preferences
Classifying atopic dermatitis: protocol for a systematic review of subtypes (phenotypes) and associated characteristics.
INTRODUCTION: Atopic dermatitis is a complex disease with differing clinical presentations. Many attempts have been made to identify uniform subtypes, or phenotypes, of atopic dermatitis in order to identify different aetiologies, improve diagnosis, estimate more accurate clinical prognoses, inform treatment andmanagement or predict treatment efficacy andeffectiveness. However, no consensus yet exists on exactly what defines these phenotypes or how many there are and whether they are genuine or statistical artefacts. This review aims to identify previously reported phenotypes of atopic dermatitis, the features used to define them and any characteristics or clinical outcomes significantly associated with them. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: We will search Ovid Embase, Ovid MEDLINE and Web of Science from inception to the latest available date at the time of the search for studies attempting to classify atopic dermatitis in humans using any cross-sectional or longitudinal epidemiological or interventional design. Primary outcomes are atopic dermatitis phenotypes, features used to define them and characteristics associated with them in subsequent analyses. A secondary outcome is the methodological approach used to derive them. Two reviewers will independently screen titles and abstracts for inclusion, extract data and assess study quality. We will present the results of this review descriptively and with frequencies where possible. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval is not required for this study as it is a systematic review. We will report results from this systematic review in a peer-reviewed journal. The main value of this study will be to inform further research. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER: CRD42018087500
Your Discomfort Is Valid: Big Feelings and Open Pedagogy
This article explores the affective reactions of 13 community college students engaged in an open pedagogy textbook creation project. The instructor and first author, a human development and family services faculty member and department chair at a community college in Oregon, received feedback from her students that the project impacted them differently than past learning experiences. Student engagement with research and the diverse personal experiences of their classmates fostered both personal challenges and growth. This article groups these experiences into themes and explores different theoretical lenses, including scaffolding (constructivism), transformative learning, threshold concepts and safe spaces/brave spaces. We discuss the support that students and faculty can use in similar learning situations, such as metacognition and cultural humility. Finally, we offer a visual model that open educators can use and adapt to consider how to raise or lower the stakes of an open pedagogy assignment
Open Science, Closed Doors?:Countering Marginalization through an Agenda for Ethical, Inclusive Research in Communication
The open science (OS) movement has advocated for increased transparency in certain aspects of research. Communication is taking its first steps toward OS as some journals have adopted OS guidelines codified by another discipline. We find this pursuit troubling as OS prioritizes openness while insufficiently addressing essential ethical principles: respect for persons, beneficence, and justice. Some recommended open science practices increase the potential for harm for marginalized participants, communities, and researchers. We elaborate how OS can serve a marginalizing force within academia and the research community, as it overlooks the needs of marginalized scholars and excludes some forms of scholarship. We challenge the current instantiation of OS and propose a divergent agenda for the future of Communication research centered on ethical, inclusive research practices.</p
Development of a nature-based solution for mitigation of Pacific oyster summer mortality: use of the intertidal zone to improve resilience to environmental stressors
In recent years, Pacific oyster growers in British Columbia (BC), Canada have experienced devastating losses due to summer mortality syndrome. While anecdotal evidence suggests that intertidally-grown oysters may fare better during mass mortality events than deep-water counterparts, there remains a lack of research examining how different culture conditions may influence severity. To address this, we compared growth, condition, histopathology, reproductive status, and survival between intertidally- and deep-water-cultured oysters over 2 years at three oyster farms in Baynes Sound (BC). A reciprocal transplant was carried out after 1 year to test the use of the intertidal as a mechanism for promotion of physiological resilience prior to deep-water deployment. Field trial results showed significantly higher final survival in oysters transferred from the intertidal to deep water (83.5%) compared to those maintained in deep water (63.6%), but only at one farm, likely as a consequence of varying physical and/or biological characteristics associated with particular farm locations. Histopathology showed little role of disease with regards to varying survival among treatments, though higher occurrence of Viral Gametocytic Hypertrophy was observed in Year 1 oysters under deep-water (62.2%) versus intertidal (37.8%) conditions. Additionally, after 2 years, there was no significant difference in oyster size nor condition index between oysters transplanted from the intertidal to deep water and those solely cultured in deep water. A laboratory-challenge experiment determined significantly different survival curves of Year 1 intertidally- and deep-water-cultured oysters under immersion/emersion and warming conditions, with final survival of 88% and 64%, respectively, under conditions of high temperature (25°C) and immersion. Likewise, Year 2 (i.e. post-transfer) intertidally- and deep-water-cultured oysters showed significantly different survival curves under laboratory-based Vibrio challenge conditions (16°C) with final survival of 63% and 34%, respectively. Results suggest that partial culture in the intertidal at some farms may be an effective method for conferring resilience to summer mortality in Pacific oysters
Measuring Five Dimensions of Religiosity Across Adolescence
This paper theorizes and tests a latent variable model of adolescent religiosity in which five dimensions of religiosity are interrelated: religious beliefs, religious exclusivity, external religiosity, private practice, and religious salience. Research often theorizes overlapping and independent influences of single items or dimensions of religiosity on outcomes such as adolescent sexual behavior, but rarely operationalizes the dimensions in a measurement model accounting for their associations with each other and across time. We use longitudinal structural equation modeling (SEM) with latent variables to analyze data from two waves of the National Study of Youth and Religion. We test our hypothesized measurement model as compared to four alternate measurement models and find that our proposed model maintains superior fit. We then discuss the associations between the five dimensions of religiosity we measure and how these change over time. Our findings suggest how future research might better operationalize multiple dimensions of religiosity in studies of the influence of religion in adolescence
Integrated RNA and DNA sequencing reveals early drivers of metastatic breast cancer
Breast cancer metastasis remains a clinical challenge, even within a single patient across multiple sites of the disease. Genome-wide comparisons of both the DNA and gene expression of primary tumors and metastases in multiple patients could help elucidate the underlying mechanisms that cause breast cancer metastasis. To address this issue, we performed DNA exome and RNA sequencing of matched primary tumors and multiple metastases from 16 patients, totaling 83 distinct specimens. We identified tumor-specific drivers by integrating known protein-protein network information with RNA expression and somatic DNA alterations and found that genetic drivers were predominantly established in the primary tumor and maintained through metastatic spreading. In addition, our analyses revealed that most genetic drivers were DNA copy number changes, the TP53 mutation was a recurrent founding mutation regardless of subtype, and that multiclonal seeding of metastases was frequent and occurred in multiple subtypes. Genetic drivers unique to metastasis were identified as somatic mutations in the estrogen and androgen receptor genes. These results highlight the complexity of metastatic spreading, be it monoclonal or multiclonal, and suggest that most metastatic drivers are established in the primary tumor, despite the substantial heterogeneity seen in the metastases
