Complex networks and public funding: the case of the 2007-2013 Italian program
In this paper we apply techniques of complex network analysis to data sources
representing public funding programs and discuss the importance of the
considered indicators for program evaluation. Starting from the Open Data
repository of the 2007-2013 Italian Program Programma Operativo Nazionale
'Ricerca e Competitivit\`a' (PON R&C), we build a set of data models and
perform network analysis over them. We discuss the obtained experimental
results outlining interesting new perspectives that emerge from the application
of the proposed methods to the socio-economical evaluation of funded programs.Comment: 22 pages, 9 figure
Matrix element corrections in the Pythia8 parton shower in the context of matched simulations at next-to-leading order
We discuss the role of matrix element corrections (MEC) to parton showers in
the context of MC@NLO-type matchings for processes that feature unstable
resonances, where MEC are liable to result in double-counting issues, and are
thus generally not employed. By working with Pythia8, we show that disabling
all MEC is actually unnecessary in computations based on the narrow-width
approximation, and we propose alternative MEC settings which, while still
avoiding double counting, allow one to include hard-recoil effects in the
simulations of resonance decays. We illustrate our findings by considering
top-antitop production at the LHC, and by comparing MadGraph_aMC@NLO
predictions with those of POWHEG-BOX and standalone Pythia8.Comment: 16 pages, 9 figure
OMiR: Identification of associations between OMIM diseases and microRNAs
AbstractA large number of loci for genetic diseases have been mapped on the human genome and a group of hereditary diseases among them have thus far proven unsuccessful to clone. It is conceivable that such "unclonable" diseases are not linked to abnormalities of protein coding genes (PCGs), but of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs). We developed a novel approach termed OMiR (OMIM and miRNAs), to test whether microRNAs (miRNAs) exhibit any associations with mapped genetic diseases not yet associated with a PCG. We found that "orphan" genetic disease loci were proximal to miRNA loci more frequently than to loci for which the responsible protein coding gene is known, thus suggesting that miRNAs might be the elusive culprits. Our findings indicate that inclusion of miRNAs among the candidate genes to be considered could assist geneticists in their hunt for disease genes, particularly in the case of rare diseases
Posterior stability in posterior-stabilized vs medially congruent total knee replacement: A radiological comparison of two polyethylene designs in a single model:
Objective:The purpose of this radiological study was to assess the posterior laxity of a single model of a total knee arthroplasty design (TKA) having a medially constrained (MC) or a Posterior-Stabilized (PS) polyethylene insert using a well-documented stress x-ray. To the authors knowledge, this is the first report evaluating MC TKA outcomes according to the "kneeling view."Materials and Methods:Sixty patients with non-traumatic primary knee osteoarthritis undergoing TKA were first matched by age, sex, BMI and diagnosis and then divided in two groups: group A (37 knees) received a MC TKA and group B (23 knees) a PS implant made by the same manufacturer. In all cases the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) was resected. All patients underwent the same postoperative "kneeling view" and were also clinically evaluated according to the Knee Society Score (KSS) and Oxford Knee Score (OKS). Radiographic measurements were taken by tracing a line along the posterior cortex of the tibia and then measuring the perpendicular distance to a point marked at the posterior corner of Blumensaat's line. Results:At 12 months minimum FU, no statistically significant differences were found between the two groups in all the clinical scores. There was a statistically significant difference on kneeling view values between the two groups (P = 0.0002): the mean value in the MC group was −1.97 ± 3.8 mm while was −5.6 ± 3.1 mm in the PS group. In both groups, the average position of the posterior cortex of the tibia was anterior to the posterior corner of Blumensaat's line, showing absence of instability in flexion. Conclusion:This study highlighted that the PCL removal, accompanied by a precise surgical technique, did not increase the instability in flexion in two groups of patients having the same TKA design but polyethylene inserts characterized by different levels of constraint
Liquefaction source layer for sand blows induced by the 2016 megathrust earthquake (Mw 7.8) in Ecuador (Boca de Briceño)
Numerous sand boils were generated in the alluvial plain at the mouth of the Rio BriceËœno valley (Ecuador) during
the Mw 7.8 earthquake of April 2016. The area is characterized by a series of raised marine terraces formed as a
consequence of the rapid tectonic coastal uplift during the Quaternary. Boreholes and geotechnical investigations
were carried during post-earthquake surveys and for the purpose of mitigating the liquefaction effects. Five
lithological units were identified at a site of embankment, which represented continental-marine and transitional
sedimentation since the Last Glacial Maximum. A comprehensive study of texture and petrographic composition
of sand boils has been performed and compared with sandy silts and silty sands of the buried sedimentary
sequence in order to identify the source levels for liquefaction. The petrographic components, in particular the
low content of bioclasts and carbonate fragments of the sand boils, allow to pinpoint a source layer made up of
fine-grained silty sands located between 2 and 4.5 m depth (Unit 2) whereas the deeper marine sands, richer in
bioclasts, were not involved. The results support the idea that earthquake-induced liquefaction phenomena are
not restricted to clean sands and well-sorted deposits, but may affect sand layers with significant amount of nonplastic
silt
Retrospective study showed that palpitations with tachycardia on admission to a paediatric emergency department were related to cardiac arrhythmias
AIM: This retrospective study reviewed the prevalence and long-term prognosis of children aged 0-18 with palpitations who were admitted to the emergency department (ED) of an Italian paediatric hospital. METHODS: We examined all admissions to the ED of the IRCCS Burlo Garofolo between January 2009 and December 2015 by selecting triage diagnoses of palpitations. The hospital discharge cards were reviewed to assess vital parameters, physical examinations, diagnostic tests, cardiology consultations and final diagnoses. RESULTS: Of the 142 803 patients who attended our ED for any reason, 96 (0.07%) complained of palpitations. Despite this low prevalence, it was noteworthy that 13.5% had a real underlying arrhythmic cause and needed medical assistance. Over half (52.1%) were women and the mean age was 12.7 years. At the long-term follow-up, at a mean of 47 \ub1 23 months, 53.8% of patients with a cardiac arrhythmia had received medical therapy and 46.1% had undergone trans-catheter ablation for supraventricular tachycardia. A heart rate above 146 beats per minute or palpitations for more than an hour was statistically related to a cardiac arrhythmia. CONCLUSION: Palpitations were an infrequent cause of admission to our ED, but 13.5% who displayed them had an underlying cardiac arrhythmia

Geometry and evolution of a fault-controlled Quaternary basin by means of TDEM and single-station ambient vibration surveys: The example of the 2009 L'Aquila earthquake area, central Italy
We applied a joint survey approach integrating time domain electromagnetic soundings and
single-station ambient vibration surveys in the Middle Aterno Valley (MAV), an intermontane basin in
central Italy and the locus of the 2009 L’Aquila earthquake. By imaging the buried interface between the
infilling deposits and the top of the pre-Quaternary bedrock, we reveal the 3-D basin geometry and gain
insights into the long-term basin evolution. We reconstruct a complex subsurface architecture, characterized
by three main depocenters separated by thresholds. Basin infill thickness varies from ~200–300m in the
north to more than 450m to the southeast. Our subsurface model indicates a strong structural control on the
architecture of the basin and highlights that the MAV experienced considerable modifications in its
configuration over time. The buried shape of the MAV suggests a recent and still ongoing predominant
tectonic control by the NW-SE trending Paganica-San Demetrio Fault System (PSDFS), which crosscuts older
~ENE and NNE trending extensional faults. Furthermore, we postulate that the present-day arrangement
of the PSDFS is the result of the linkage of two previously isolated fault segments. We provide constraints on
the location of the southeastern boundary of the PSDFS, defining an overall ~19 km long fault system
characterized by a considerable seismogenetic potential and a maximum expected magnitude larger than
M6.5. This study emphasizes the benefit of combining two easily deployable geophysical methods for
reconstructing the 3-D geometry of a tectonically controlled basin. Our joint approach provided us with a
consistent match between these two independent estimations of the basin substratum depth within 15%.Published2236–22597T. Struttura della Terra e geodinamica2TR. Ricostruzione e modellazione della struttura crostaleJCR Journa
A Novel Prodrug of a nNOS Inhibitor with Improved Pharmacokinetic Potential
Under different pathological conditions, aberrant induction of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) generates overproduction of NO that can cause irreversible cell damage. The aim of this study was to develop an amidoxime prodrug of a potent nNOS inhibitor, the benzhydryl acetamidine. We synthesized the benzhydryl acetamidoxime, which was evaluated in vitro to ascertain the potential NOS inhibitory activity, as well as conducting bioconversion into the parent acetamidine. The prodrug was also profiled for in vitro physicochemical properties, by determining the lipophilicity, passive permeation through the human gastrointestinal tract and across the blood-brain barrier by PAMPA, and chemical, enzymatic, and plasma stability. The obtained data demonstrate that the amidoxime prodrug shows an improved pharmacokinetic profile with respect to the acetamidine nNOS inhibitor, thus suggesting that it could be a promising lead compound to treat all those pathological conditions in which nNOS activity is dysregulated
