Our paper aims to participate to the growing policy discussion on high-growth firms (HGFs) by analyzing persistence of high growth patterns over crisis. During downturn periods, such as post pandemic one, policy makers seek sources to maintain competitiveness and accelerate growth. Being dynamic players in economic growth and job creation, persistent high-growth firms are notable candidates for assuming that role under such circumstances. Therefore, in this study we explore the determinants and characteristics of HGFs and persistent high-growth firms (PHGF) in a crisis scenario. We use a sample of 190,247 firms from 2007 to 2014. We estimate a multinomial probit model with independent idiosyncratic components across the different categories (i.e. HGFs, PHGFs and other firms) using full maximum likelihood. In a second phase we explore which characteristics of HGFs affect the probability of being a PHGFs. HGFs are characterized by higher productivity and leverage, and PHGFs systematically differ from other HGFs only in what regards degree of international involvement. HGFs probability of maintaining high growth rates is very low. HGFs are essentially one-hit wonders and it is debatable whether policymakers can enhance economic results by targeting them. Policy makers should be directed towards those firms which have in principal the potential to be winners, but only through policy intervention these aided firms can realize their great potential (i.e. pick and build winner)

This paper analyzes the distribution of population in Brazil, one of the starting points for understanding the formation of cities and enduring social inequality. Its goal is to describe and to reflect about the decisions of architectural planning, territory design, and urban planning, and to propose a possible course correction. Two scenarios served as its backdrop: the state of violence and misery to which poor people are subjected in Brazilian urban centers and how one faces the water issues in Brazil, especially in its Northeast Region. At its core, this paper questions the vector mode for planning growth in a territory and analyzes two points: the behavior of populations and the knowledge of the waters. It starts out from the statement that the Brazilian Northeast exports two products: man and water. It also provides a brief analysis about a project to divert part of the São Francisco River to fight the desertification process in the Brazilian semi-arid region and discusses a national alternative to face this problem

Characterization of a rare analphoid supernumerary marker chromosome in mosaic

Abstract publicado em: Chromosome Research. 2015;23(Suppl 1):67-8. doi:10.1007/s10577-015-9476-6Analphoid supernumerary marker chromosomes (SMCs) are a rare subclass of SMCs C-band-negative and devoid of alpha-satellite DNA. These marker chromosomes cannot be identified unambiguously by conventional banding techniques alone being necessary to apply molecular cytogenetic methods in favour of a detailed characterization. In this work we report an analphoid SMC involving the terminal long arm of chromosome 7, in 9 years-old boy with several dysmorphic features and severe development delay. Cytogenetic analysis revealed a mosaic karyotype with the presence of an extra SMC, de novo, in 20 % of lymphocytes and 73 % of fibroblast cells. FISH analysis with alpha-satellite probes for all chromosomes, whole chromosome painting probe for chromosome 7, and D7S427 and TelVysion 7q probes, allowed establishing the origin of the SMC as an analphoidmarker resulting of an invdup rearrangement of 7q36-qter region. Affimetrix CytoScan HD microarray analysis, redefined the SMC to arr[hg19] 7q35(143696249-159119707)×2~3, which correspond to a gain of 15.42 Mb and encloses 67 OMIM genes, 16 of which are associated to disease. This result, combined with detailed clinical description, will provide an important means for better genotype-phenotype correlation and a more suitable genetic counselling to the patient and his parents, despite the additional difficulty resulting from being a mosaic (expression varies in different tissues). Analphoid SMCs derived from chromosome 7 are very rare, with only three cases reported so far. With this case we hope contribute to a better understanding of this type of chromosome rearrangements which are difficult for genetic counselling

Quantum complex scalar fields and noncommutativity

In this work we analyze complex scalar fields using a new framework where the object of noncommutativity θμν\theta^{\mu\nu} represents independent degrees of freedom. In a first quantized formalism, θμν\theta^{\mu\nu} and its canonical momentum πμν\pi_{\mu\nu} are seen as operators living in some Hilbert space. This structure is compatible with the minimal canonical extension of the Doplicher-Fredenhagen-Roberts (DFR) algebra and is invariant under an extended Poincar\'e group of symmetry. In a second quantized formalism perspective, we present an explicit form for the extended Poincar\'e generators and the same algebra is generated via generalized Heisenberg relations. We also introduce a source term and construct the general solution for the complex scalar fields using the Green's function technique.Comment: 13 pages. Latex. Axial Anomaly from the BPHZ regularized BV master equation

A BPHZ renormalized form for the master equation of the field antifiled (or BV) quantization has recently been proposed by De Jonghe, Paris and Troost. This framework was shown to be very powerful in calculating gauge anomalies. We show here that this equation can also be applied in order to calculate a global anomaly (anomalous divergence of a classically conserved Noether current), considering the case of QED. This way, the fundamental result about the anomalous contribution to the Axial Ward identity in standard QED (where there is no gauge anomaly) is reproduced in this BPHZ regularized BV framework.Comment: 10 pages, Latex, minor changes in the reference

    Noncommutative Particles in Curved Spaces

We present a formulation in a curved background of noncommutative mechanics, where the object of noncommutativity θμν\theta^{\mu\nu} is considered as an independent quantity having a canonical conjugate momentum. We introduced a noncommutative first-order action in D=10 curved spacetime and the covariant equations of motions were computed. This model, invariant under diffeomorphism, generalizes recent relativistic results.Comment: 1+15 pages. Latex. New comments and results adde
