<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Sugar cane policosanols (SCP) have been shown to exert cholesterol-modulating properties in various studies conducted in Cuba by substantially reducing cholesterol synthesis. Independent research examining changes in cholesterol kinetics in response to SCP is limited to few studies, none of which was able to replicate findings of the original research. Moreover, no data are available on the effect of SCP on cholesterol absorption to date. The present study was undertaken to determine effects on cholesterol kinetics, namely synthesis and absorption, within hypercholesterolemic individuals consuming a SCP treatment. Twenty-one otherwise healthy hypercholesterolemic subjects participated in a randomized double-blind crossover study where they received 10 mg/day of policosanols or a placebo incorporated in margarine as an evening snack for a period of 28 days. The last week of the study phase, subjects were given 13C labelled cholesterol and deuterated water for the measurement of cholesterol absorption and synthesis respectively. Blood was collected on the first two and last five days of the trial. Cholesterol absorption and synthesis were determined by measuring red cell cholesterol 13C and deuterium enrichment, respectively.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>There was no significant change in LDL cholesterol levels as compared to control. In addition, the area under the curve for red cell cholesterol 13C enrichment across 96 hours was not significantly different in the SCP group as compared to control. Similarly, no difference was observed in the fractional rate of cholesterol synthesis over the period of 24 hours between the two treatment groups.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The findings of the present study fail to support previous research concerning efficacy and mechanism of action for policosanols.</p

COMPUTATIONAL PREDICTION OF A PROPELLER PERFORMANCE IN OPEN WATER CONDITION

In presence of hydrodynamics phenomena occur surrounding propeller evidently affects on accuracy’s prediction of thrust, torque and its efficiency. To achieve the objective, a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations approach is then proposed to obtain a reliable prediction of the thrust (KT), torque (KQ) and efficiency (η) coefficients in open water condition. The effect of various blade numbers associated with constant propeller revolution (RPM=1320) and pitch ratio (P/D=1.0); are performed within the range of advance ratio from 0.1J1.0. The results revealed that the increase of blade number from Z=3 to 5 was proportional with the increase of thrust (KT) and torque (KQ) coefficients; meanwhile, it was reduced the maximum efficiency (η) that possibly lead to downgrade the propeller performance. It should be noted here, the propeller with three blade numbers (Z=3) provide the highest efficiency (η) up to 78.8% at J=0.9. These CFD simulation results are very useful as a preliminary study of propeller characteristics

Seakeeping is the dynamic response of the ship in waves that may affect to passenger’s uncomfortability due to a harsh environmental condition.  Therefore, an extensive assessment of seakeeping performance in the initial step of ship design is necessarily required. The authors here proposed to analyze the seakeeping performance of ‘deep-V’ high speed catamaran using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach. Several effects of Froude number (Fr), wave-length

Defending with Errors: Approximate Computing for Robustness of Deep Neural Networks

Machine-learning architectures, such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) are vulnerable to adversarial attacks: inputs crafted carefully to force the system output to a wrong label. Since machine-learning is being deployed in safety-critical and security-sensitive domains, such attacks may have catastrophic security and safety consequences. In this paper, we propose for the first time to use hardware-supported approximate computing to improve the robustness of machine-learning classifiers. We show that successful adversarial attacks against the exact classifier have poor transferability to the approximate implementation. Surprisingly, the robustness advantages also apply to white-box attacks where the attacker has unrestricted access to the approximate classifier implementation: in this case, we show that substantially higher levels of adversarial noise are needed to produce adversarial examples. Furthermore, our approximate computing model maintains the same level in terms of classification accuracy, does not require retraining, and reduces resource utilization and energy consumption of the CNN. We conducted extensive experiments on a set of strong adversarial attacks; We empirically show that the proposed implementation increases the robustness of a LeNet-5, Alexnet and VGG-11 CNNs considerably with up to 50% by-product saving in energy consumption due to the simpler nature of the approximate logic.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2006.0770

Efficient FPGA implementation of high-throughput mixed radix multipath delay commutator FFT processor for MIMO-OFDM

    Get PDF
This article presents and evaluates pipelined architecture designs for an improved high-frequency Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) processor implemented on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) for Multiple Input Multiple Output Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM). The architecture presented is a Mixed-Radix Multipath Delay Commutator. The presented parallel architecture utilizes fewer hardware resources compared to Radix-2 architecture, while maintaining simple control and butterfly structures inherent to Radix-2 implementations. The high-frequency design presented allows enhancing system throughput without requiring additional parallel data paths common in other current approaches, the presented design can process two and four independent data streams in parallel and is suitable for scaling to any power of two FFT size N. FPGA implementation of the architecture demonstrated significant resource efficiency and high-throughput in comparison to relevant current approaches within literature. The proposed architecture designs were realized with Xilinx System Generator (XSG) and evaluated on both Virtex-5 and Virtex-7 FPGA devices. Post place and route results demonstrated maximum frequency values over 400 MHz and 470 MHz for Virtex-5 and Virtex-7 FPGA devices respectively

Screening of culture conditions for production of xylanase from landfill soil bacteria

Xylan is a major constituent of hemicellulosic polysaccharides found in plant’s cell wall which represent up to 20-30% of the total dry weight in tropical plant biomass [1]. Besides, 9-12% of municipal solid waste are composed of hemicellulose on dry weight basis [2]. Enzymatic method can be used for the degradation of these materials involving the use of microbial enzymes [3] that are less polluting, environmental friendly, energy saving and lower disposal problems [4]. Xylanase is a biocatalyst which specifically degrade xylan into smaller sugars such as xylose and xylobiose [5]. It has been used in many important industrial applications such as pulp, paper, bakery, juice and beer industries [6]. This enzyme has been employed in paper manufacturing to bleach paper pulp and increase the brightness of paper pulp instead of using toxic and expensive chemicals [5]. Xylanase also being used in biofuel production such as ethanol from lignocellulose biomass and used in treatment of barley and wheat to improve the properties of animal diet in animal feed industries [1]. Besides, this enzyme can be applied for conversion of xylan into xylose in agricultural wastewater and to clarify fruit juices in beverage industries [7]. Microbes are prefer by the industries to produce various enzymes, because of high growth rate and large volume of enzymes can be obtained within a short time [8]. Employing microbes such as bacteria, yeast and filamentous fungi, that are known for their ability to secrete extracellular enzymes into the environment, may help to overcome the current challenge in reducing the volume of waste in landfill by biological conversion of municipal solid waste into bioenergy [9]
