Lice, Mites, and Ticks of Southeastern Wisconsin Mammals
Seventeen species of southeastern Wisconsin mammals were found to 6e infected with arthropod ectoparasites other than fleas. One host species was infested with one species of biting lice (Mallophaga), five with five species of sucking lice (Anoplura), ten with at least 16 species of mites (Acari) and nine with six species of hard ticks (Ixodidae). Many new state and/or host records are reported. Host specificity was very pronounced in lice but less marked in ticks and mites particularly in the more common species, ex. Androlaelaps fahrenholzi (Berlese) and Ixodes cookei Packard, respectively
Marine Flora and Fauna of the eastern United States: Acanthocephala
The phylum Acanthocephala (intestinal worm parasites of vertebrates) of the Atlantic coast of the United States comprises 43 species and 20 genera belonging to three orders: Echinorhynchida, Neoechinorhynchida, and Polymorphida. Adults are exclusively intestinal parasites of vertebrates. This study includes those species found in vertebrates of marine and estuarine environments along the North American Atlantic coast between Maine and Texas. Species that can be found within that geographical range and those that typically infect freshwater fishes but that are occasionally present in marine or estuarine hosts are
also included. The taxonamy, anatomy, natural history, and ecology of the phylum Acanthocephala are discussed, and an illustrated key to the genera is presented. Techniques, an\ud
annotated systematic treatment of all 43 species, and a systematic index are included. No systematic decisions will be made at this time, but areas where such decisions are pending will be indicated and discussed for future reports. (PDF file contains 32 pages.
Hysteresis of Finite Arrays of Magnetic nano Dots
Hysteresis curves for finite arrays of ferromagnetic nano dots
subject to the dipole-dipole interaction are investigated for . Spin
arrangements up to N=6 are presented, which indicate the onset of bulk-like
behavior associated with odd (N=5) and even (N=6) systems. The effect of field
misalignment on the hysteresis loops is also studied for . The area
of the hysteresis loop is studied as a function of . We find that
approximately scales as for odd and as
for even.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, Submitted to PR
Detection and Isolation of Link Failures under the Agreement Protocol
In this paper a property of the multi-agent consensus dynamics that relates
the failure of links in the network to jump discontinuities in the derivatives
of the output responses of the nodes is derived and verified analytically. At
the next step, an algorithm for sensor placement is proposed, which would
enable the designer to detect and isolate any link failures across the network
based on the observed jump discontinuities in the derivatives of the responses
of a subset of nodes. These results are explained through elaborative examples.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, 201
Moment-Based Spectral Analysis of Random Graphs with Given Expected Degrees
In this paper, we analyze the limiting spectral distribution of the adjacency
matrix of a random graph ensemble, proposed by Chung and Lu, in which a given
expected degree sequence
is prescribed on the ensemble. Let if there is an edge
between the nodes and zero otherwise, and consider the normalized
random adjacency matrix of the graph ensemble: . The empirical spectral distribution
of denoted by is the empirical
measure putting a mass at each of the real eigenvalues of the
symmetric matrix . Under some technical conditions on the
expected degree sequence, we show that with probability one,
converges weakly to a deterministic
distribution . Furthermore, we fully characterize this
distribution by providing explicit expressions for the moments of
. We apply our results to well-known degree distributions,
such as power-law and exponential. The asymptotic expressions of the spectral
moments in each case provide significant insights about the bulk behavior of
the eigenvalue spectrum
Rabi Oscillations in Systems with Small Anharmonicity
When a two-level quantum system is irradiated with a microwave signal, in
resonance with the energy difference between the levels, it starts Rabi
oscillation between those states. If there are other states close, in energy,
to the first two, the Rabi signal will also induce transition to those. Here,
we study the probability of transition to the third state, in a three-level
system, while a Rabi oscillation between the first two states is performed. We
investigate the effect of pulse shaping on the probability and suggest methods
for optimizing pulse shapes to reduce transition probability.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure
Beliefs about difficult feelings
Section A provides a review of the emotional and experiential avoidance literature with a focus on determining the proximal psychological factors that might lead individuals to avoid experiencing feelings. This section highlights the importance of beliefs, judgements and appraisals about the acceptability of negative emotions, as well as fears about the physical, psychological and social consequences of tolerating internal distress as potential drivers of emotional avoidance.
Section B describes the development of a new scale to identify and measure beliefs about experiencing difficult emotions. The paper gives a background and rationale for the study and outlines the methodology that was utilised to construct and psychometrically evaluate the Beliefs about Difficult Feelings Scale (BDFS). 304 participants completed the scale online along with related measures. The six clusters of beliefs that emerged from a factor analysis of 90 pilot items include Catastrophic Beliefs, Emotions are Useful, Negative Evaluation from Others, Emotions are Exhausting/Frustrating, Emotions are Transient and Emotions are Pointless. The psychometric properties of the final 29-item BDFS are promising. The new measure demonstrated good internal consistency, test-retest reliability and construct validity, however further psychometric evaluation is needed on new samples to verify these preliminary finding
