Spillover and diffraction sidelobe contamination in a double-shielded experiment for mapping Galactic synchrotron emission
We have analyzed observations from a radioastronomical experiment to survey
the sky at decimetric wavelengths along with feed pattern measurements in order
to account for the level of ground contamination entering the sidelobes. A
major asset of the experiment is the use of a wire mesh fence around the
rim-halo shielded antenna with the purpose of levelling out and reducing this
source of stray radiation for zenith-centered 1-rpm circular scans. We
investigate the shielding performance of the experiment by means of a geometric
diffraction model in order to predict the level of the spillover and
diffraction sidelobes in the direction of the ground. Using 408 MHz and 1465
MHz feed measurements, the model shows how a weakly-diffracting and unshielded
antenna configuration becomes strongly-diffracting and double-shielded as
far-field diffraction effects give way to near-field ones. Due to the
asymmetric response of the feeds, the orientation of their radiation fields
with respect to the secondary must be known a priori before comparing model
predictions with observational data. By adjusting the attenuation coefficient
of the wire mesh the model is able to reproduce the amount of differential
ground pick-up observed during test measurements at 1465 MHz.Comment: 14 pages, 17 eps + 1 gif figures and 4 Tables. Accepted for

The antitumor drug, 1,3-bis(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitroso-urea, inactivates human nicotinamide mononucleotide adenylyltransferase.
Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) adenylyltransferase (EC 2.7.7.1) from human placenta is rapidly inactivated by 1,3-bis(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea (BCNU). A similar inactivation is observed with other C- and N-nitroso compounds. The inactivation by BCNU is dependent on incubation time, temperature and BCNU concentration. Protective reagents for -SH groups, dithiothreitol and beta-mercaptoethanol, and the substrate NMN are very effective in protecting NMN adenylyltransferase from BCNU inactivation and in preserving its catalytic properties, while ATP is less efficient. Incubation of BCNU-inactivated and dialysed NMN adenylyltransferase with dithiothreitol results in a partial recovery of the enzymatic activity
Satisfaction with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease treatment: results from a multicenter, observational study
Background: Understanding the level of patients' satisfaction with treatment and its determinants have the potential to impact therapeutic management and clinical outcome in chronic conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods: A national, multicenter, longitudinal, observational study of COPD from 20 Italian pulmonary centers to explore patients' satisfaction to treatment [assessed by the Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire, 9 items (TSQM-9)] and association with clinical parameters [including dyspnea score, COPD Assessment Test (CAT) score, exacerbation rate], adherence to treatment [Morisky Medication-Taking Adherence Scale (MMAS-4)], illness perception [evaluated by Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (B-IPQ)] in a 1-year follow up. Results: A total of 401 COPD patients were enrolled [69.4% group B Global Initiative for COPD (GOLD), considering 366 patients with available GOLD 2017 classification at enrollment]. At enrollment, satisfaction with treatment was moderate, being TSQM-9 mean scores for effectiveness 64.2 [95% confidence interval (CI) 62.5-65.9], for convenience 75.8 (95% CI 74.2-77.3), and for global satisfaction 65.7 (95% CI 64.0-67.4). Global satisfaction was negatively associated with disease perception (beta = -0.4709, p < 0.0001), and grade of dyspnea (beta = -4.2564, p = 0.009). Satisfaction with treatment was lower in patients with poor compared with optimal adherence to treatment (beta = -4.5608, p = 0.002). Changes in inhalation regimens during follow up did not modify the satisfaction with treatment. Conclusions: The results of this real-life study showed that the patients' satisfaction with treatments is only moderate in COPD. A high grade of patients' satisfaction is associated mainly with a low perception of the disease, high adherence to treatment and lower level of dyspnea
Soil Moisture ActivePassive (SMAP) L-Band Microwave Radiometer Post-Launch Calibration
The SMAP microwave radiometer is a fully-polarimetric L-band radiometer flown on the SMAP satellite in a 6 AM/ 6 PM sun-synchronous orbit at 685 km altitude. Since April, 2015, the radiometer is under calibration and validation to assess the quality of the radiometer L1B data product. Calibration methods including the SMAP L1B TA2TB (from Antenna Temperature (TA) to the Earths surface Brightness Temperature (TB)) algorithm and TA forward models are outlined, and validation approaches to calibration stability/quality are described in this paper including future work. Results show that the current radiometer L1B data satisfies its requirements
