This book is not merely a history of Mao’s thought, as it presents a philosophical inquest on its development. It is also a philosophical reflection on the state of contemporary Chinese society and culture employing Mao’s philosophical keys. What Allinson provides is a completely new narrative of the so-called Great Helmsman’s intellectual profile and all of 20th Chinese culture. This is the right book at the right moment for understanding China’s incredible growth and deep contradictions, but also the new Chinese diplomatic impatience towards unequal treatment on the international stage. Mao’s most unacceptable and dramatic decisions find a new coherency that, in this case, contradicts the thesis of the “banality of evil”. Allinson shows an excellent capacity to freely reflect with the thinker without lessening the tragic consequences of his political decisions. As the author states: “Mao represents a unique mixture between Plato’s philosopher king and Plato’s tyrant of the Republic” (p. 100)

Idealised simulations of cyclones with robust symmetrically-unstable sting jets
Idealised simulations of Shapiro-Keyser cyclones developing a sting jet (SJ) are presented. Thanks to an improved and accurate implementation of thermal wind balance in the initial state, it has been possible to use more realistic environments than in previous idealised studies. As a consequence, this study provides further insight in SJ evolution and dynamics and explores SJ robustness to different environmental conditions, assessed via a wide range of sensitivity experiments.
The control simulation contains a cyclone that fits the Shapiro-Keyser conceptual model and develops a SJ whose dynamics are associated with the evolution of mesoscale instabilities along the airstream, including symmetric instability (SI). The SJ undergoes a strong descent while leaving the cloud-head banded tip and markedly accelerating towards the frontal-fracture region, revealed as an area of buckling of the already-sloped moist isentropes.
Dry instabilities, generated by vorticity tilting via slantwise frontal motions in the cloud head, exist in similar proportions to moist instabilities at the start of the SJ descent and are then released along the SJ. The observed evolution supports the role of SI in the airstream’s dynamics proposed in a conceptual model outlined in a previous study.
Sensitivity experiments illustrate that the SJ is a robust feature of intense Shapiro-Keyser cyclones, highlighting a range of different environmental conditions in which SI contributes to the evolution of this airstream, conditional on the model having adequate resolution.
The results reveal that several environmental factors can modulate the strength of the SJ. However, a positive relationship between the strength of the SJ, both in terms of peak speed and amount of descent, and the amount of instability occurring along it can still be identified.
In summary, the idealised simulations presented in this study show the robustness of SJ occurrence in intense Shapiro-Keyser cyclones and support and clarify the role of dry instabilities in SJ dynamics
Fengshui:A Moral Technique-Art (jiyi 技藝) for Contemporary Environmental Awareness
In this article, we will define fengshui as a contemporary hybrid way of thinking with a long history that unfolds from ancient Chinese philosophy and the art of ruling, through Song Neo-Confucianism, to modern Western ecologic interpretations. We will particu-larly highlight the cosmological and moral ratio of this art in the philosophical thought of Zhu Xi and Cai Yuanding, which we will propose as the possible source of a reno-vated moral fengshui. After this historical framework, we will present the process of the scientifization of fengshui as a building technology. Therefore, we will put into question this enframing of fengshui as a modern technology through both Heidegger's lens and Li Zehou's definition of "proper measure" (du (sic)). Following this hermeneutical analysis, we will propose jiyi (sic) (technique-art) as the most suitable definition of fengshui and we will present the ethical dimension behind it (i.e., filial piety towards nature). In the conclusions, we will argue that fengshui is not, properly speaking, an environmental phi-losophy or an ecologism, since these two concepts are too rooted in Western philosophi-cal culture (i.e., transcendence and the separateness of humans and nature). However, we are convinced that fengshui could fruitfully contribute to a deeper ecological awareness with a Chinese character on both the local and global scales
Development of a Complex Flow Phantom for Diagnostic Imaging
Literature and market analysis have highlighted the lack of flow phantom technologies able to challenge innovative medical imaging devices, such as Ultrasound and Magnetic Resonance. A novel, cost-effective, compact and robust Complex Flow Phantom prototype was proposed. The design relies on the generation of stable, reproducible, predictable and controllable vortex rings. Vortex rings were chosen because bring together high stability and physiological relevance. The design was tested with multiple and independent measurement methods under challenging working conditions. Overall, it demonstrated to produce reproducible flows with variability always lower than +/- 10 %. This variability was assessed with regards to translational velocity, however, macro-flow reproducibility implies micro-flow stability. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and optical/video acquisitions were used as first methods to independently validate two early prototypes operating in air and water. CFD overall well approximate theoretical predictions but accuracy was insufficient to provide a reference standard. Overall, the early prototypes demonstrated encouraging stability and a Vortex Ring based Complex Flow Phantom prototype was manufactured. Laser PIV acquisitions were performed to establish flow reference standard values. Optical/video acquisitions were performed and results were compared with Laser PIV to assess the rigour of the methods. Results obtained by the two different measurement methods on two identically manufactured but different systems showed credible consistency. Conventional and advanced (Vector Flow Imaging) Ultrasound acquisitions were also performed on the design. An instrumentation pack was designed and is provided as tool for self-calibrating the phantom and for estimating flow reference values under different generating conditions. An MRI compatible version of the phantom was manufactured and was tested in laboratory. Design and experiments are supported by journal article and conference proceeding publications, poster and oral presentation in international conferences. Normal fault earthquakes or graviquakes
Earthquakes are dissipation of energy throughout elastic waves. Canonically is the elastic energy
accumulated during the interseismic period. However, in crustal extensional settings, gravity is
the main energy source for hangingwall fault collapsing. Gravitational potential is about 100 times
larger than the observed magnitude, far more than enough to explain the earthquake. Therefore,
normal faults have a different mechanism of energy accumulation and dissipation (graviquakes) with
respect to other tectonic settings (strike-slip and contractional), where elastic energy allows motion
even against gravity. The bigger the involved volume, the larger is their magnitude. The steeper the
normal fault, the larger is the vertical displacement and the larger is the seismic energy released.
Normal faults activate preferentially at about 60° but they can be shallower in low friction rocks. In
low static friction rocks, the fault may partly creep dissipating gravitational energy without releasing
great amount of seismic energy. The maximum volume involved by graviquakes is smaller than the
other tectonic settings, being the activated fault at most about three times the hypocentre depth,
explaining their higher b-value and the lower magnitude of the largest recorded events. Having
