The Distribution of the Asymptotic Number of Citations to Sets of Publications by a Researcher or From an Academic Department Are Consistent With a Discrete Lognormal Model

How to quantify the impact of a researcher's or an institution's body of work is a matter of increasing importance to scientists, funding agencies, and hiring committees. The use of bibliometric indicators, such as the h-index or the Journal Impact Factor, have become widespread despite their known limitations. We argue that most existing bibliometric indicators are inconsistent, biased, and, worst of all, susceptible to manipulation. Here, we pursue a principled approach to the development of an indicator to quantify the scientific impact of both individual researchers and research institutions grounded on the functional form of the distribution of the asymptotic number of citations. We validate our approach using the publication records of 1,283 researchers from seven scientific and engineering disciplines and the chemistry departments at the 106 U.S. research institutions classified as "very high research activity". Our approach has three distinct advantages. First, it accurately captures the overall scientific impact of researchers at all career stages, as measured by asymptotic citation counts. Second, unlike other measures, our indicator is resistant to manipulation and rewards publication quality over quantity. Medical Escort of Critical Care Patients in the Pre-Hospital Setting

Introduction: Pre-hospital emergency cases include the patient’s transportation to the hospital, with an adequate escort, when indicated. In Portugal, secondary transport’s escort is guided by an escort score published by the Portuguese Medical Association’s Guidelines on the Critical Care Patient’s Transport (2008). This score (TS) defines three levels of escort: no medical escort (level A), doctor or nurse escort (level B), doctor and nurse escort (level C). There is no published data on this score’s application to the pre-hospital setting. Such use could improve resource management in the pre-hospital emergency medical services, as it could support the need to involve a doctor and/or nurse in the patient’s escort to the hospital. Our study’s aim is the evaluate the TS application to the pre-hospital context. Study Methods: We gathered data from primary transports’ escorts between January 2015 and January 2017. We recorded whether the patient was taken to hospital or not, and if yes, the transport’s escort (Doctor, Doctor and Nurse, or only emergency technicians). Posteriorly, we calculated the TS for each of those transport records. Any records with incomplete escort data or where the score could not be calculated were excluded. Using this data, we calculated Sensibility (Ss), Specificity (Sp), positive predicitive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV) of the TS for the following situations: Escort by emergency technicians only (level A), escort by doctor or nurse (level B) or escort by doctor and nurse (level C) Results and discussion: We found complete data regarding 556 primary transports 141 patients were escorted by emergency technicians only, 269 by doctor or nurse only, and 146 by a doctor and nurse. TS level A was found to have Ss 85,78%, Sp 70,92%, PPV 89,67% and NPV 62,89% regarding escort by emergency technicians only. These values support the decision of taking no medical escort in a primary transport in the pre-hospital setting when TS is level A. On the other hand, TS level C has Ss 78,08%, Sp 59,72%, PPV 40,57% and NPV 88,36% regarding escort by both a doctor and nurse. These numbers are less clear regarding a decision to take a medical escort. Conclusions: TS appears to be an indicator with enough Ss and Sp to help the pre-hospital team choose whether or not to escort the patient to the hospital with only emergency technicians or with a more differentiated escort, especially when the score’s result is Level A. But it cannot differentiate between doctor or nurse or both doctor and nurse when the result is level B or C. Ab-initio study of the relation between electric polarization and electric field gradients in ferroelectrics

The hyperfine interaction between the quadrupole moment of atomic nuclei and the electric field gradient (EFG) provides information on the electronic charge distribution close to a given atomic site. In ferroelectric materials, the loss of inversion symmetry of the electronic charge distribution is necessary for the appearance of the electric polarization. We present first-principles density functional theory calculations of ferroelectrics such as BaTiO3, KNbO3, PbTiO3 and other oxides with perovskite structures, by focusing on both EFG tensors and polarization. We analyze the EFG tensor properties such as orientation and correlation between components and their link with electric polarization. This work supports previous studies of ferroelectric materials where a relation between EFG tensors and polarization was observed, which may be exploited to study ferroelectric order when standard techniques to measure polarization are not easily applied.Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables, corrected typos, as published in Phys. Biometric analysis of seeds of genotypes of physic nut (Jatropha curcas L.).

Procurou-se investigar aspectos da morfologia das sementes de diferentes genótipos de pinhão-manso, em razão da pouca literatura existente em relação aos aspectos biométrico das sementes desta espécie. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, em esquema simples, sendo 15 níveis de genótipos (Diamantina, Tominaga, Paraíso, Jales, CNPAE ? C2, CNPAE ? 171, G ? 2, AGE, 167, 200, 210, 315, 316, 1501 e 8001), com quatro repetições. As avaliações foram realizadas com parcelas de 100 sementes para cada repetição, mensurando as variáveis: medida de largura em mm (LAS), comprimento em mm (COS) e massa de 100 sementes e g (MCS), de sementes de pinhão-manso. No geral, para os 15 genótipos de pinhão-manso estudados houve a formação de 3 grupos de médias distintas em relação as variáveis biométricas, destacando-se os genótipos Paraiso e Jales e os acessos CNPAE ? C2 e AGE

Coulomb and quantum oscillator problems in conical spaces with arbitrary dimensions

The Schr\"odinger equations for the Coulomb and the Harmonic oscillator potentials are solved in the cosmic-string conical space-time. The spherical harmonics with angular deficit are introduced. The algebraic construction of the harmonic oscillator eigenfunctions is performed through the introduction of non-local ladder operators. By exploiting the hidden symmetry of the two-dimensional harmonic oscillator the eigenvalues for the angular momentum operators in three dimensions are reproduced. A generalization for N-dimensions is performed for both Coulomb and harmonic oscillator problems in angular deficit space-times. It is thus established the connection among the states and energies of both problems in these topologically non-trivial space-times.Comment: 15 page

O artigo propõe um debate a partir das proposições de Nietzsche sobre a genealogia da moral e de suas ideias sobre a moral nobre e a moral doescravo, a moral de rebanho e o espírito livre, tomando esse conjunto de proposições como ferramenta de leitura de algumas letras de rap. Ao mesmo tempo, inspirado por um trabalho de pesquisa em educação com o rap na periferia, pretende provocar novas tensões nas ideias deste pensador, refletindo particularmente sobre as condições que têm sido enfrentadas pelas populações historicamente prejudicadas em nossa sociedade, por meio da leitura da gramática moral do conflito proposta por Axel Honneth.The article proposes a debate based on Nietzsche’s propositions about the genealogy of morals and his ideas about the master and the slave morality, the herd morality and the free spirit, by taking all these tools to approach some rap lyrics.
