Copyright, Fair Use and the Digital Age in Academic Libraries: A Review of the Literature

    Get PDF
Copyright law in the United States has gained a certain notoriety for its complexity and ambiguity, which has only been compounded by the evolution (or, some would say, revolution) of print resources to electronic resources. The purpose of this literature review is to review the current understanding of copyright law within the context of academic libraries in universities and colleges. Additionally, this review will describe what issues academic librarians face in complying with copyright law in this new digital age while continuing to perform duties such as processing course reserve materials, developing an institutional repository, and maintaining a digital collection. This literature review emphasizes the need for further and continuing education about copyright law among all members of the campus community, and, in particular, academic librarians

If Governor Cuomo signs the bill, businesses will be given a seventh option – the benefit corporation. Vaccine implementation: Alaska 2017

Bacterial meningitis is a serious disease that causes permanent dysfunction or death; adolescents and young adults carry the greatest risk. The national Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has released vaccine recommendations that include incorporation of meningitis vaccine in to the mandatory school vaccine schedule. Throughout the nation, much of legislative policy has made meningitis vaccination a requirement for public school attendance. Alaska does not have such policy; the purpose of the project was to address this policy need. A secondary project goal was to increase community awareness of bacterial meningitis. Project actions were divided into policy advocacy and community awareness. Policy advocacy included the development of a Policy Brief to Persuade designed for the Alaska legislative health care committee members. A legislative survey to assess willingness to incorporate a required meningitis vaccine schedule into existing Alaska vaccine policy was sent electronically with the policy brief. Community awareness interventions included the development of a Meningitis Education Bundle for healthcare professionals and a Protect Alaska’s Future campaign. The education bundle was distributed to local health establishments on Prince of Wales Island and the campaign information was distributed at the 2017 Prince of Wales Community Health Fair. Project outcomes demonstrated a lack of response to the policy survey. Efforts must continue over time with a deliberate plan to gain legislative support for the incorporation of a meningitis vaccination schedule into existing Alaska vaccine policy, as recommended by the ACIP. Community awareness activities at the health fair were successful and should continue

The Effects of Popular Music in Television Advertisements on Branding

Have you ever found that the music a company chooses helps you understand its brand better, and did you eventually find yourself becoming a loyal customer? The goal of this project is to investigate whether or not connections like these occur and, if so, why they happen and what they mean for advertisers. More specifically, the study examines the influence of music in television advertisements on the last three steps of the brand building process: brand imagery, brand feelings, and brand resonance. The purpose of the research is to discover the extent to which popular songs used in television commercials create the appropriate brand image, spark an emotional connection to the brand, and eventually establish a brand relationship with consumers. In addition to secondary research compiled in a literature review, a survey comprised mainly of Likert scale questions was distributed to Bryant University students. Participants were assigned to one of three conditions in which they were shown commercials for both Nike and Starbucks 1.)with popular music, 2.) without popular music, or 3.) no commercial at all. Participants were then asked questions relating to perceived brand imagery and purchase behavior. Results suggest that the popular music does not have significant effects on consumers’ brand perception and loyalty. Limitations of this study and suggestions for further research are also discussed
