Numerical study of the localization length critical index in a network model of plateau-plateau transitions in the quantum Hall effect

    Get PDF
We calculate numerically the localization length critical index within the Chalker-Coddington (CC) model for plateau-plateau transitions in the quantum Hall effect. Lyapunov exponents have been calculated with relative errors on the order 10−310^{-3}. Such high precision was obtained by considering the distribution of Lyapunov exponents for large ensembles of relatively short chains and calculating the ensemble average values. We analyze thoroughly finite size effects and find the localization length critical index ν=2.517±0.018\nu= 2.517\pm 0.018.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Electrostatic tailoring of magnetic interference in quantum point contact ballistic Josephson junctions

The magneto-electrostatic tailoring of the supercurrent in quantum point contact ballistic Josephson junctions is demonstrated. An etched InAs-based heterostructure is laterally contacted to superconducting niobium leads and the existence of two etched side gates permits, in combination with the application of a perpendicular magnetic field, to modify continuously the magnetic interference pattern by depleting the weak link. For wider junctions the supercurrent presents a Fraunhofer-like interference pattern with periodicity h/2e whereas by shrinking electrostatically the weak link, the periodicity evolves continuously to a monotonic decay. These devices represent novel tunable structures that might lead to the study of the elusive Majorana fermions.Comment: 4.5 pages, 4 color figure

On the relationship of the scaled phase space and Skyrme-coherent state treatments of proton antiproton annihilation at rest

We discuss pion multiplicities and single pion momentum spectra from proton antiproton annihilation at rest. Both the scaled phase space model and the Skyrme-coherent state approach describe these observables well. In the coherent state approach the puzzling size of the scale parameter relating the phase space integrals for different multiplicities is replaced by a well defined weight function. The strength of this function is determined by the intensity of the classical pion field and its spatial extent is of order 1 fm.Comment: 11 pages including 4 figures(postscript

Circularly Polarized Resonant Rayleigh Scattering and Skyrmions in the ν\nu = 1 Quantum Hall Ferromagnet

We use the circularly polarized resonant Rayleigh scattering (RRS) to study the quantum Hall ferromagnet at ν\nu = 1. At this filling factor we observe a right handed copolarized RRS which probes the Skyrmion spin texture of the electrons in the photoexcited grounds state. The resonant scattering is not present in the left handed copolarization, and this can be related to the correlation between Skymionic effects, screening and spin wave excitations. These results evidence that RRS is a valid method for the study of the spin texture of the quantum Hall states

UU. y Europa, adaptadas a nuestra región. During the 80th decade, the Horticulture Chair of the Agrarian Sciences Faculty of the Cuyo National University enlarged its improvement program in this species. This program was directed to develop some cultivars with determined growth plants (shrublike) of yellow an orange colored fruits, different from red colored classic cultivars. The phytogenetic material employed in the crossings came from foreign cultivars, mainly from USA and Europe, that were adapted to our region. From such crossings, the most outstanding lines were chosen after asevere selection until a good stabilization of searcherd characters was achieved; most outstanding lines were chosen which were submitted to test as to productivity and in principie, as to outstanding agronomic, characteristics of plants and fruit quality, lirmness and aptitudes for the manufacturing of preserves. The final result is the obtention of two new tomato cultivar, gotFil: Bartucciotto, Carmelo V.. AbstractEikenella corrodens is a normal inhabitant of the human oral cavity and gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts. Pleuropulmonary infections by this microorganism are uncommon. Pulmonary aspiration is a chief predisposing condition. Although the outcome is usually favorable, its distinctive antibiotic sensitivity pattern makes bacterial identification an important feature in dealing with this infection. The authors report a case of pleural empyema caused by co-infection with Eikenella corrodens and Porphyromonas asaccharolytica, in an immunocompetent diabetic patient with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, followed by a discussion on the role of noninvasive ventilation in the development of this infection

Spectroscopic characterisation of CARMENES target candidates from FEROS, CAFE and HRS high-resolution spectra

CARMENES (Calar Alto high-Resolution search for M dwarfs with Exoearths with Near-infrared and optical Echelle Spectrographs) started a new planet survey on M-dwarfs in January this year. The new high-resolution spectrographs are operating in the visible and near-infrared at Calar Alto Observatory. They will perform high-accuracy radial-velocity measurements (goal 1 m s-1) of about 300 M-dwarfs with the aim to detect low-mass planets within habitable zones. We characterised the candidate sample for CARMENES and provide fundamental parameters for these stars in order to constrain planetary properties and understand star-planet systems. Using state-of-the-art model atmospheres (PHOENIX-ACES) and chi2-minimization with a downhill-simplex method we determine effective temperature, surface gravity and metallicity [Fe/H] for high-resolution spectra of around 480 stars of spectral types M0.0-6.5V taken with FEROS, CAFE and HRS. We find good agreement between the models and our observed high-resolution spectra. We show the performance of the algorithm, as well as results, parameter and spectral type distributions for the CARMENES candidate sample, which is used to define the CARMENES target sample. We also present first preliminary results obtained from CARMENES spectra

Effect of a magnetic field on the two-phonon Raman scattering in graphene

We have studied, both experimentally and theoretically, the change of the so-called 2D band of the Raman scattering spectrum of graphene (the two-phonon peak near 2700 cm-1) in an external magnetic field applied perpendicular to the graphene crystal plane at liquid helium temperature. A shift to lower frequency and broadening of this band is observed as the magnetic field is increased from 0 to 33 T. At fields up to 5--10 T the changes are quadratic in the field while they become linear at higher magnetic fields. This effect is explained by the curving of the quasiclassical trajectories of the photo-excited electrons and holes in the magnetic field, which enables us (i) to extract the electron inelastic scattering rate, and (ii) to conclude that electronic scattering accounts for about half of the measured width of the 2D peak.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure
