Optimum power loads for elite boxers: case study with the Brazilian national olympic team
The purpose of this case study was to examine the effects of a resistance-training program based on the optimum power loads (OPL) method on neuromuscular performance of Olympic boxing athletes during preparation for the Rio-2016 Olympic Games. Twelve elite amateur boxers from the Brazilian National Olympic Team participated in this study. Athletes were assessed at four time-points, over two consecutive competitive seasons. In the first season (considered as "control period"), the athletes executed a non-controlled strength-power training program for 10 weeks. In the second season (a seven-week experimental period), the elite boxers performed 14 power-oriented training sessions, comprising bench press (BP) and jump squat (JS) exercises at the OPL. Maximum bar-power output in BP and JS exercises was measured pre and post both training phases. Magnitude-based inferences were used to compare changes in pre and post training tests. Bar-power outputs increased meaningfully in both BP (+8%) and JS (+7%) exercises after the OPL training program. In contrast, after the control period, no worthwhile improvements were observed in the variables tested. Based on the findings of this study, highly trained boxers might benefit from the use of a training scheme based on OPL
Are victims also judged more positively if they say their lives are just?
Non-victims who express high versus low personal belief in a just world (PBJW) are judged as
having more social value, both social utility (i.e., market value) and social desirability (i.e., affective value). Our goal was to test whether this pattern differed when the targets were presented as innocent or noninnocent victims of enduring suffering. A hundred and eighty-six participants of both sexes took part in our 2 (degree of PBJW expressed: high/low) X 3 (Target identity: innocent victim/ non-innocent victim/non-victim) between-subjects experimental study. Participants rated the targets on four measures: positive/negative social utility/desirability. Targets were judged more positively and less negatively if they expressed high versus low PBJW, regardless of their being non-victims or (non-)innocent victims. This pattern is taken as further evidence that the expression of high PBJW is a judgment norm, that is, a socially valued discourse irrespective of it being true or untrue.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Evaluation By Blue Native Polyacrylamide Electrophoresis Colorimetric Staining Of The Effects Of Physical Exercise On The Activities Of Mitochondrial Complexes In Rat Muscle.
Blue native polyacrylamide electrophoresis (BN-PAGE) is a technique developed for the analysis of membrane complexes. Combined with histochemical staining, it permits the analysis and quantification of the activities of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation enzymes using whole muscle homogenates, without the need to isolate muscle mitochondria. Mitochondrial complex activities were measured by emerging gels in a solution containing all specific substrates for NADH dehydrogenase and cytochrome c oxidase enzymes (complexes I and IV, respectively) and the colored bands obtained were measured by optique densitometry. The objective of the present study was the application of BN-PAGE colorimetric staining for enzymatic characterization of mitochondrial complexes I and IV in rat muscles with different morphological and biochemical properties. We also investigated these activities at different times after acute exercise of rat soleus muscle. Although having fewer mitochondria than oxidative muscles, white gastrocnemius muscle presented a significantly higher activity (26.7 +/- 9.5) in terms of complex I/V ratio compared to the red gastrocnemius (3.8 +/- 0.65, P < 0.05) and soleus (9.8 +/- 0.9, P < 0.001) muscles. Furthermore, the complex IV/V ratio of white gastrocnemius muscle was always significantly higher when compared to the other muscles. Ninety-five minutes of exhaustive physical exercise induced a decrease in complex I/V and complex IV/V ratios after all resting times (0, 3 and 6 h) compared to control (P < 0.05), probably reflecting the oxidative damage due to increasing free radical production in mitochondria. These results demonstrate the possible and useful application of BN-PAGE-histochemical staining to physical exercise studies.37939-4
Usefulness of Liver and Spleen Acoustic Radiation Force Impulse (ARFI) for the evaluation of cirrhotic patients
Objective: To evaluate the correlation between ARFI and Child-Pugh classification. Secondary
Aims: 1) To compare ARFI values (hepatic, splenic and spleno-hepatic index) from cirrhotic to
normal population; 2) To correlate biochemical parameters of liver function and ARFI. Materials
and Methods: 58 cirrhotic patients (referenced to US for surveillance or to clarify any hepatic decompensation)
were included in this prospective study, as well as 38 healthy subjects who underwent
ultrasonography for other reasons than hepatic evaluation. All had ARFI liver and spleen
evaluation on ACUSON S2000 ARFI equipment. The best cut-off liver and spleen values for the diagnosis
of cirrhosis in comparison to the normal subjects were determined using SPSS® v20. Results:
Mean liver ARFI values in controls and cirrhotic patients were respectively 1.18 ± 0.22 m/s
and 2.93 ± 0.50 m/s. The ROC curve demonstrated an AUC 0.998 and the best cut-off was 1.89.
Mean spleen ARFI values in controls and cirrhotic patients were respectively 2.60 ± 0.42 m/s and
3.03 ± 0.71. The ROC curve demonstrated an AUC 0.766 and the best cut-off was 2.73 m/s. The
splenohepatic index showed a worse AUC than ARFI liver. A weak correlation was found between
the ARFI liver and Child-Pugh. We found no statistically significant differences for spleen ARFI
values and Child-Pugh. We found a statistically significant correlation between liver ARFI and bilirubin,
ALKP, GGT, AST and AST/ALT ratio; and with spleen ARFI and ALKP and AST/ALT ratio.
Conclusion: We showed that there is a tendency of higher levels of liver ARFI values for higher
Child-Pugh classification suggesting a definite trend for higher values with more severe disease
Effect of scan strategies and use of support structures on surface quality and hardness of L-PBF AlSi10Mg parts
Additive manufacturing allows for a great degree of design freedom and is rapidly becoming a mainstream manufacturing process. However, as in all manufacturing processes, it has its limitations and specificities. Equipping engineers with this knowledge allows for a higher degree of optimization, extracting the most out of this technology. Therefore, a specific part design was devised and created via L-PBF (Laser Powder Bed Fusion) using AlSi10Mg powder. Certain parameters were varied to identify the influence on material density, hardness, roughness, residual stress and microstructures. It was found that on heat treated parts laser pattern strategy is one of the most influential aspects, showing that chessboard and stripes 67° improved outcome; average Ra roughness varied between 8-12 μm, residual stress was higher on vertical surfaces than horizontal surfaces, with the combination of support structures and stripes 67° strategies generating the lowest residual stress (205 MPa on a lateral/vertical face), hardness was non-orientation dependent and larger on samples with chessboard fabrication strategies, while microstructures were composed of α-Al dendrites surrounded by Si particles. The distribution and grain size of the microstructure is dependent on location regarding melt pool and HAZ area. Furthermore, Al-Mg oxides were encountered on the surface, along with pores generating from lack of fusion
