Experimental software engineering in educational context

    Get PDF
Empirical studies are important in software engineering to evaluate new tools, techniques, methods and technologies in a structured way before they are introduced in the industrial (real) software process. Within this PhD thesis we will develop a framework of a consistent process for involving students as subjects of empirical studies of software engineering. In concrete, our experiences with software development teams composed of students will analyze how RUP (Rational Unified Process) processes can be compliant with the CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration), namely in the context of MLs (maturity levels) 2 and 3. Additionally, we will also analyze the influence of project management tools to improve the process maturity of the teams. Our final goal of carrying out empirical studies with students is to understand its validity when compared with the corresponding studies in real industrial settings

Architectural element points: estimating software development effort by analysis of logical architectures

    Get PDF
Empirical studies are important in software engineering to evaluate new tools, techniques, methods and technologies. In object-oriented analysis, use case models describe the functional requirements of a software system, so they can be the basis for software measurement and sizing. The purpose of this study is to develop a new metric called Architectural Element Points (AEPoint) that enables to calculate the effort required to develop a software solution, using the 4-Step Rule Set (4SRS) method. This paper describes a case study with 60 undergraduate students grouped in four teams that developed a software system (Web application) for a real customer. In this study, we used the AEPoint metric to estimate the resources needed to develop a software system. The results of the AEPoint and Use Case Points (UCP) metrics and the real software development effort are compared, conclusions drawn and recommendations are proposed.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

This report is part of the final phase of the Master in Audit, in which it seeks to present the completion of an internship as assistant / junior audit, the company PALM, SROC, Lda., for six months. The stage was intended to apply the knowledge acquired throughout the academic training in the field of financial audit. The multidisciplinary approach of this area allowed me to apply and deepen their knowledge of financial accounting, taxation, financial management, among others. The objectives of the training plan integrates the theoretical application, being absorbed concepts and techniques that only practice can overcome. In addition to the listed objectives in the internship plan, proved to be an opportunity to clarify how the audit work is carried out, specifically how the auditor determines what to analyze and, finally, how do you decide what material or do not. The aim of this study is to realize in a practical case of a municipality literature and auditing standards are applied at each stage of the calculation of materiality process. This work is divided into four chapters, where the first two chapters correspond to a theoretical framework theme, conducted through literature review. The third chapter is the applied methodology presented, the cozy company, the objectives, the activities and the critical assessment of the stage, and the presentation and discussion of results. Finally, in the last chapter will be presented a conclusion on the results obtained in carrying out this report. The main limitation of this study is reflected in the fact that the matters to be dealt with are all confidential, preventing the disclosure of certain relevant data

A Review of the Nonsurgical Treatment of Oral Leukoplakia

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper was to assess the nonsurgical treatment of oral leukoplakia (OL). A medline search from 1983 to 2009 was conducted. The topical or systemic nonsurgical treatments or combination of both was reviewed. The primary outcomes of interest were clinical resolution, malignant transformation, follow-up, and recurrence of OL. Studies showed a rate higher than 50% of clinical resolution with photodynamic therapy, beta-carotene, lycopene, or vitamin A. Few studies reported rates of recurrence from 5 to 67% and of malignant transformation from 8 to 23%. There is a lack of randomized clinical trials that assess the effectiveness of nonsurgical treatment of OL. At this time, randomized controlled trials for nonsurgical treatment of OL demonstrate no evidence of effective treatment in preventing malignant transformation and recurrence. It reinforces that even after clinical resolution, OL should be regularly followed

Empirical studies are important in software engineering to evaluate new tools, techniques, methods and technologies in a structured way before they are introduced in the industrial (real) software process. Perform empirical studies in a real context is very difficult due to various obstacles. An interesting alternative is perform empirical studies in an educational context using students as subjects and share the results with the academia and the industry. This paper describes a case study with two teams that developed a software system (Web application) for a real customer. In this study we used a model based on Function Points Analysis (FPA) to estimate the size and complexity of software system

Longevity of risks in software development projects: a comparative analysis with an academic environment

The study presented in this paper was developed in an academic environment. All subjects involved in this research are enrolled in the Information Systems Master’s Degree of the University of Minho. The main objective of this study is to demonstrate the need for the continuity of studies about the risks presented in software development projects. For this purpose, we analyzed more than four hundred risks and about one hundred problems faced and documented by the working groups. With the collected data we defined a list of twenty risks and conducted a comparative study of these risks with others already formalized in previous industrial studies. The comparison data was analyzed and interpreted, and important conclusions were made.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Gossypiboma in the oral region: case report and literature review

    Get PDF
Gossypiboma is an inflammatory reaction to a foreign body, specifically composed of a cotton matrix left behind after surgery. The present study aims to present a case report of gossypiboma 23 years after a dental surgery and to make a literature review of the English language cases published on the issue. A 42-year-old woman was attended to evaluate complaints of pain on the right side of the maxilla. The patient reported that dental extractions in this region had been performed over a period of nearly 23 years. The panoramic radiograph demonstrated an opacity in the right maxillary sinus, which presented a spongiform aspect, irregularly shaped radiopaque image, as well as a rupture of the maxillary sinus's lower cortical layer. A surgical excision was performed, and the histopathological diagnosis was of gossypiboma. Six similar cases have also reported of gossypiboma in the oral region; however, calcification was only identified in the present case report. The patient is currently undergoing follow-up and has presented no complaints of pain or recurrence

Ossifying odontogenic fibroma: a rare case report

    Get PDF
Odontogenic fibroma (OF) is a rare benign odontogenic neoplasm that is most commonly found in the mandibular/ premolar region of female patients in the second to fourth decades of life. Well-defined radiolucent lesions that may induce root resorption are normally observed. Rare variants of OF have been described in the prior literature, including references to: 1) giant cell lesions, 2) amyloid-like protein deposition, and 3) ossifying variants. Immuno - histochemistry can contribute to understanding the biological behavior and the pathogenesis of OF. Therefore, this case report aimed to describe a new case of ossifying OF and discuss the histopathology and immunohistochemical features
