Optimized cross-slot flow geometry for microfluidic extension rheometry
A precision-machined cross-slot flow geometry with a shape that has been optimized by numerical simulation of the fluid kinematics is fabricated and used to measure the extensional viscosity of a dilute polymer solution. Full-field birefringence microscopy is used to monitor the evolution and growth of macromolecular anisotropy along the stagnation point streamline, and we observe the formation of a strong and uniform birefringent strand when the dimensionless flow strength exceeds a critical Weissenberg number Wicrit 0:5. Birefringence and bulk pressure drop measurements provide self consistent estimates of the planar extensional viscosity of the fluid over a wide range of deformation rates (26 s1 "_ 435 s1) and are also in close agreement with numerical simulations performed by using a finitely extensible nonlinear elastic dumbbell model
Aggregation in a mixture of Brownian and ballistic wandering particles
In this paper, we analyze the scaling properties of a model that has as
limiting cases the diffusion-limited aggregation (DLA) and the ballistic
aggregation (BA) models. This model allows us to control the radial and angular
scaling of the patterns, as well as, their gap distributions. The particles
added to the cluster can follow either ballistic trajectories, with probability
, or random ones, with probability . The patterns were
characterized through several quantities, including those related to the radial
and angular scaling. The fractal dimension as a function of
continuously increases from (DLA dimensionality) for
to (BA dimensionality) for . However, the
lacunarity and the active zone width exhibt a distinct behavior: they are
convex functions of with a maximum at . Through the
analysis of the angular correlation function, we found that the difference
between the radial and angular exponents decreases continuously with increasing
and rapidly vanishes for , in agreement with recent
results concerning the asymptotic scaling of DLA clusters.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. accepted for publication on PR
Slow down of a globally neutral relativistic beam shearing the vacuum
The microphysics of relativistic collisionless sheared flows is investigated
in a configuration consisting of a globally neutral, relativistic beam
streaming through a hollow plasma/dielectric channel. We show through
multidimensional PIC simulations that this scenario excites the Mushroom
instability (MI), a transverse shear instability on the electron-scale, when
there is no overlap (no contact) between the beam and the walls of the
hollow plasma channel. The onset of the MI leads to the conversion of the
beam's kinetic energy into magnetic (and electric) field energy, effectively
slowing down a globally neutral body in the absence of contact. The
collisionless shear physics explored in this configuration may operate in
astrophysical environments, particularly in highly relativistic and supersonic
settings where macroscopic shear processes are stable
Influence of vibrational kinetics in a low pressure capacitively coupled hydrogen discharge
In this paper we present the self consistent coupling of a 2D model of a parallel plate radio frequency discharge in pure hydrogen with a homogeneous chemical kinetics model including H2(X1Σg+,v=0..14) molecules and hydrogen atoms H(n=1-5). The model can estimate the ground state atomic hydrogen density and it was found that the vibrational kinetics changes the H3+ ion density and coupled power to the discharge about 40% when comparing with previous estimates using a simplified kinetics
Applications of molecularly imprinted polymers to the analysis and removal of personal care products: A review
Personal-care products (PCPs) involve a variety of chemicals whose persistency along with their constant release into the environment raised concern to their potential impact on wildlife and humans health. Regarded as emergent contaminants, PCPs demonstrated estrogenic activity leading to the need of new methodologies to detect and remove those compounds from the environment. Molecular imprinting starts with a complex between a template molecule and a functional monomer, which is then polymerized in the presence of a cross-linker. After template removal, the polymer will contain specific cavities. Based on a good selectivity towards the template, molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) have been investigated as efficient materials for the analysis and extraction of the so called emergent pollutants contaminants. Rather than lowering the limit of detections, the key theoretical advantage of MIP over existing methodologies is the potential to target specific chemicals. This unique feature, sometime named specificity (as synonym to very high selectivity) allows to use cheap, simple and/or rapid quantitative techniques such as fast separation with ultra-violet (UV) detection, sensors or even spectrometric techniques. When a high degree of selectivity is achieved, samples extracted with MIPs can be directly analyzed without the need of a separation step. However, while some papers clearly demonstrated the specificity of their MIP toward the targeted PCP, such prove is often lacking, especially with real matrices, making it difficult to assess the success of the different approaches. This review paper focusses on the latest development of MIPs for the analysis of personal care products in the environment, with particular emphasis on design, preparation and practical applications of MIPs. Exact solution for the energy density inside a one-dimensional non-static cavity with an arbitrary initial field state
We study the exact solution for the energy density of a real massless scalar
field in a two-dimensional spacetime, inside a non-static cavity with an
arbitrary initial field state, taking into account the Neumann and Dirichlet
boundary conditions. This work generalizes the exact solution proposed by Cole
and Schieve in the context of the Dirichlet boundary condition and vacuum as
the initial state. We investigate diagonal states, examining the vacuum and
thermal field as particular cases. We also study non-diagonal initial field
states, taking as examples the coherent and Schrodinger cat states.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
