Torsion cycles as non-local magnetic sources in non-orientable spaces
Non-orientable spaces can appear to carry net magnetic charge, even in the
absence of magnetic sources. It is shown that this effect can be understood as
a physical manifestation of the existence of torsion cycles of codimension one
in the homology of space.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure
Monitoring of evoked potentials during spinal cord ischaemia: Experimental evaluation in a rabbit model
Objectives:somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs), spinal evoked potentials (Spinal-EPs), and motor-evoked potentials (MEPs) were monitored in a rabbit model of spinal cord ischaemia to evaluate their accuracy and relationship to clinical status. Methods:a modified rabbit spinal cord ischaemia model of infrarenal aortic occlusion for 21 min was employed (30 rabbits). After baseline SEPs, Spinal-EPs, and MEPs were obtained, evoked potentials were recorded continuously during and after clamping of the aorta (30 min). Neurological outcome at 24 h was correlated with evoked potentials, and histopathological findings. Results:fifteen animals became paraplegic. MEPs were always abolished after clamping of the aorta while Spinal-EPs and SEPs remained. The sensory evoked potentials (SEPs and Spinal-EPs) were the least sensitive to spinal cord ischaemia, and their presence had no correlation with the final clinical status (50% of false negatives). This was consistent with histopathological examination that showed damage almost entirely confined to the anterior horn, while the dorsal columns were generally well preserved. High spine MEPs evoked by twitch stimulation was the best predictor of clinical outcome (0% of false negatives, 0% of false positives). Conclusions:SEPs and Spinal-EPs cannot be used as safe monitors of ischaemia of the spinal cord. High spine MEPs evoked by twitch stimulation was the most useful for real-time evaluation of spinal cord ischaemia, and the best predictor of neurologic outcome during reperfusion

Constructive procedures to solve 2-dimensional bin packing problems with irregular pieces and guillotine cuts
This paper presents an approach for solving a new real problem in cutting and packing. At its core is an innovative mixed integer programme model that places irregular pieces and defines guillotine cuts. The two-dimensional irregular shape bin packing problem with guillotine constraints arises in the glass cutting industry, for example, the cutting of glass for conservatories. Almost all cutting and packing problems that include guillotine cuts deal with rectangles only, where all cuts are orthogonal to the edges of the stock sheet and a maximum of two angles of rotation are permitted. The literature tackling packing problems with irregular shapes largely focuses on strip packing i.e. minimizing the length of a single fixed width stock sheet, and does not consider guillotine cuts. Hence, this problem combines the challenges of tackling the complexity of packing irregular pieces with free rotation, guaranteeing guillotine cuts that are not always orthogonal to the edges of the stock sheet, and allocating pieces to bins. To our knowledge only one other recent paper tackles this problem. We present a hybrid algorithm that is a constructive heuristic that determines the relative position of pieces in the bin and guillotine constraints via a mixed integer programme model. We investigate two approaches for allocating guillotine cuts at the same time as determining the placement of the piece, and a two phase approach that delays the allocation of cuts to provide flexibility in space usage. Finally we describe an improvement procedure that is applied to each bin before it is closed. This approach improves on the results of the only other publication on this problem, and gives competitive results for the classic rectangle bin packing problem with guillotine constraint
Hadron resonances generated from the dynamics of the lightest scalar ones
We have studied the interactions of the scalar resonances f_0(980) and
a_0(980) with the vector resonance \phi(1020) and with the lightest
pseudoscalars \pi, K, \eta and \eta'. We first obtain the interaction kernels
without including any new free parameter. Afterwards, the interaction kernels
are unitarized and the final S-wave amplitudes result. We find that these
interactions are very rich and generate a large amount of pseudoscalar
resonances including the K(1460), \pi(1300), \pi(1800), \eta(1475) and X(1835)
resonances. The f_0(980)\phi(1020) self-interactions give rise to the
\phi(2170) resonance. For realistic choices of the parameters we also obtain an
isovector companion in the same mass region from the a_0(980) \phi(1020)
interactions.Comment: 4 pafes, 4 figures. Invited talk at QCD 10 (25th anniversary), 15th

CCD measurements of visual double stars at Calar Alto.
342 CCD measurements of relative positions and magnitude differences for 145 visual double stars are presented. Observations were carried out at the 1.23m telescope of the German-Spanish Astronomical Center at Calar Alto (Spain), all of them in V and R photometric bands
Localized Tachyons and the g_cl conjecture
We consider C/Z_N and C^2/Z_N orbifolds of heterotic string theories and Z_N
orbifolds of AdS_3. We study theories with N=2 worldsheet superconformal
invariance and construct RG flows. Following Harvey, Kutasov, Martinec and
Moore, we compute g_cl and show that it decreases monotonically along RG flows-
as conjectured by them. For the heterotic string theories, the gauge degrees of
freedom do not contribute to the computation of g_cl.Comment: Corrections and clarifications made, 19 page
