Publish, not Perish: Supporting Graduate Students as Aspiring Authors

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND Students pursuing advanced degrees are increasingly expected to contribute to their discipline’s scholarly discourse during their tenure in graduate school. However, they are often unsure of how or where to begin the publishing process, and do not always feel comfortable asking for help from their faculty advisors or fellow students. Scholars, including librarians, have attempted to address these concerns by developing tools and services to meet the needs of future faculty. In recent years, university presses and research libraries have recognized their shared mission in furthering scholarship, with libraries themselves offering publishing education and expertise. PROJECT OVERVIEW During the 2012-2013 academic year, subject librarians and publishing professionals at the University of Michigan Library crafted a program to address students’ questions and concerns about the publishing lifecycle. This ongoing initiative includes a multi-semester workshop series developed in concert with faculty from departments throughout campus, as well as a supplementary online toolkit that takes into account the rapidly evolving nature of scholarly communication. LESSONS LEARNED Major takeaways from this program include: the value of student assessment in shaping publishing workshops; awareness of the discrepancies of registration numbers and actual attendance, highlighting the potential for enhanced promotion techniques; the importance of university press and faculty insight; and the benefits of collaboration among librarians, publishing professionals, and faculty members. NEXT STEPS Future iterations of this program will incorporate in-depth assessment of each program, a more interactive learning environment, and better scheduling and promotion of the workshop series

Improving Public Health Communication In A Politically Polarized Environment: Exploring The Use Of Moral Values In Message Framing

Public health practitioners need to engage stakeholders to address today’s complex public health problems. Yet communicating with stakeholders – particularly policy officials – has become more challenging due to political polarization. One promising communications strategy focuses on framing messages that tap into six intuitive moral values, based on Moral Foundations Theory. Previous research has shown a strong connection between people’s moral values and their political affiliation. The purpose of this study was to: (1) assess the intuitive moral values of public health practitioners and local officials in North Carolina; and (2) test the perceived effectiveness of public health messages framed using different moral values among North Carolina local officials. The study hypothesized that public health practitioners would lean toward moral foundations that resonate more with political liberals, whereas local officials would identify with ones that resonate more with conservatives. Methods: An online survey assessed the moral foundations of 372 public health practitioners and 147 local officials in North Carolina. A between-subjects, randomized experiment with local officials tested (1) the perceived effectiveness of values-based messages about policies about COVID-19 and vaping, and (2) related information-seeking behavior. Findings: In multivariate regression models, moral foundation scores consistently varied by political views, education, region, race/ethnicity, and age. As predicted, public health practitioners scored higher on the moral foundations of Care and Fairness, and local officials scored higher on Loyalty, Authority, and Sanctity (as well as Liberty). However, public health practitioners and local officials shared a similar overall pattern in their moral foundations. One vaping message framed using Care/Fairness scored higher than one using binding foundations (i.e., Loyalty/Authority/Sanctity). Using binding foundations alone to frame public health messages did not appeal to conservatives. Given the study was conducted during a global pandemic and contentious U.S. presidential election, further research is warranted to test message framing for other public health topics. Implications: Recommendations are offered for using findings to improve how public health practitioners communicate with stakeholders about COVID-19 and other pressing public health issues. A plan is outlined to refine and expand an existing national training program to increase public health practitioner skills to become more effective communicators.Doctor of Public Healt

Geometry Diagnostics of a Stellar Flare from Fluorescent X-rays

We present evidence of Fe fluorescent emission in the Chandra HETGS spectrum of the single G-type giant HR 9024 during a large flare. In analogy to solar X-ray observations, we interpret the observed Fe Kα\alpha line as being produced by illumination of the photosphere by ionizing coronal X-rays, in which case, for a given Fe photospheric abundance, its intensity depends on the height of the X-ray source. The HETGS observations, together with 3D Monte Carlo calculations to model the fluorescence emission, are used to obtain a direct geometric constraint on the scale height of the flaring coronal plasma. We compute the Fe fluorescent emission induced by the emission of a single flaring coronal loop which well reproduces the observed X-ray temporal and spectral properties according to a detailed hydrodynamic modeling. The predicted Fe fluorescent emission is in good agreement with the observed value within observational uncertainties, pointing to a scale height 0.3\lesssim 0.3\rstar. Comparison of the HR 9024 flare with that recently observed on II Peg by Swift indicates the latter is consistent with excitation by X-ray photoionization.Comment: accepted for publication on the Astrophysical Journal Letter

Keeping Pace with Information Literacy Instruction for the Real World: When Will MLS Programs Wake Up and Smell the LILACs?

    Get PDF
For over thirty years, numerous studies have discussed the contradiction between the growing importance of information literacy instruction to the Library\u27s core mission and lack of pedagogical training for new librarians. This article reviews the more recent contributions on the topic, presents a survey of New York State MLS curricula and describes initiatives of pedagogy training offered in that region outside of MLS programs. The authors focus on the Library Instruction Leadership Academy (LILAC), an innovative, semester-long training program created in Western New York State to offer instruction in the pedagogical foundation and practical experience essential for teaching information literacy skills effectively. They provide details of the program\u27s content, organization, funding, assessment methods, and learning outcomes. While regional initiatives like LILAC prove to be very valuable to their participants, the authors aim to apply pressure on MLS programs to establish curricular requirements better suited to the demands of today\u27s librarianship
