Advance Directives in Skilled Nursing Facilities
Purpose: The purpose of this project is to decrease the likelihood of receiving unwanted treatment at the end of life. The project is conducted in a skilled nursing facility where only approximately 40% of the residents have an Advance Directive (AD) despite experiencing multiple comorbidities and nearing the end of life.
Aims: Implementing a quality improvement project, creating a system that addresses AD completion at admission with the outcome of increased recognition of residents’ end of life choices.
Process: Residents and their families are presented with a tool to help guide the conversation about AD at the admission care plan meeting. AD will be readdressed at all subsequent care plan meetings, occurring every 45 days, and as needed.
Results: Project is still in process and the expected completion date is April 8th, 2022. We anticipate improvement in AD completion rates in this facility.
Limitations: This project is limited by the reluctance of some residents and families to discuss issues related to death and dying, which may affect the completion rate. Another limiting factor is the staff turnover and need to reeducate new staff members about the project.
Conclusions: Residents in skilled nursing facilities are likely to receive unwanted treatment because families are unsure what their wishes and are left feeling obligated to do everything necessary to sustain life. The implementation of this project may increase the AD completion rates, while recognizing and carrying out residents’ end of life choices
Evaluating and promoting open data practices in open access journals
The last decade has seen a dramatic increase in attention from the scholarly
communications and research community to open access (OA) and open data
practices. These are potentially related because journal publication policies and
practices both signal disciplinary norms and provide direct incentives for data
sharing and citation. However, there is little research evaluating the data policies
of OA journals. In this study we analyse the state of data policies for OA journals
by employing random sampling of the Directory of Open Access Journals and
Open Journal Systems journal directories and applying a coding framework that
integrates both previous studies and emerging taxonomies of data sharing and
citation. This study, for the first time, reveals both the low prevalence of datasharing
policies and practices in OA journals, which differs from the previous
studies of commercial journals in specific disciplines

Evaluating 'Prefer not to say' Around Sensitive Disclosures
As people's offline and online lives become increasingly entwined, the sensitivity of personal information disclosed online is increasing. Disclosures often occur through structured disclosure fields (e.g., drop-down lists). Prior research suggests these fields may limit privacy, with non-disclosing users being presumed to be hiding undesirable information. We investigated this around HIV status disclosure in online dating apps used by men who have sex with men. Our online study asked participants (N=183) to rate profiles where HIV status was either disclosed or undisclosed. We tested three designs for displaying undisclosed fields. Visibility of undisclosed fields had a significant effect on the way profiles were rated, and other profile information (e.g., ethnicity) could affect inferences that develop around undisclosed information. Our research highlights complexities around designing for non-disclosure and questions the voluntary nature of these fields. Further work is outlined to ensure disclosure control is appropriately implemented around online sensitive information disclosures

wordriver is a literary journal dedicated to the poetry, short fiction and creative nonfiction of adjuncts and part-time instructors teaching in our universities, colleges, and community colleges. Our premier issue was published in Spring 2009. We are always looking for work that demonstrates the creativity and craft of adjunct/part-time instructors in English and other disciplines. We reserve first publication rights and onetime anthology publication rights for all work published. We define adjunct instructors as anyone teaching part-time or full-time under a semester or yearly contract, nationwide and in any discipline. Effects of anharmonic strain on phase stability of epitaxial films and superlattices: applications to noble metals
Epitaxial strain energies of epitaxial films and bulk superlattices are
studied via first-principles total energy calculations using the local-density
approximation. Anharmonic effects due to large lattice mismatch, beyond the
reach of the harmonic elasticity theory, are found to be very important in
Cu/Au (lattice mismatch 12%), Cu/Ag (12%) and Ni/Au (15%). We find that
is the elastically soft direction for biaxial expansion of Cu and Ni, but it is
for large biaxial compression of Cu, Ag, and Au. The stability of
superlattices is discussed in terms of the coherency strain and interfacial
energies. We find that in phase-separating systems such as Cu-Ag the
superlattice formation energies decrease with superlattice period, and the
interfacial energy is positive. Superlattices are formed easiest on (001) and
hardest on (111) substrates. For ordering systems, such as Cu-Au and Ag-Au, the
formation energy of superlattices increases with period, and interfacial
energies are negative. These superlattices are formed easiest on (001) or (110)
and hardest on (111) substrates. For Ni-Au we find a hybrid behavior:
superlattices along and like in phase-separating systems, while for
they behave like in ordering systems. Finally, recent experimental
results on epitaxial stabilization of disordered Ni-Au and Cu-Ag alloys,
immiscible in the bulk form, are explained in terms of destabilization of the
phase separated state due to lattice mismatch between the substrate and

Automated PDF highlighting to support faster curation of literature for Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease
Neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease are devastating and costly illnesses, a source of major global burden. In order to provide successful interventions for patients and reduce costs, both causes and pathological processes need to be understood. The ApiNATOMY project aims to contribute to our understanding of neurodegenerative disorders by manually curating and abstracting data from the vast body of literature amassed on these illnesses. As curation is labour-intensive, we aimed to speed up the process by automatically highlighting those parts of the PDF document of primary importance to the curator. Using techniques similar to those of summarisation, we developed an algorithm that relies on linguistic, semantic and spatial features. Employing this algorithm on a test set manually corrected for tool imprecision, we achieved a macro F1-measure of 0.51, which is an increase of 132% compared to the best bag-of-words baseline model. A user based evaluation was also conducted to assess the usefulness of the methodology on 40 unseen publications, which reveals that in 85% of cases all highlighted sentences are relevant to the curation task and in about 65% of the cases, the highlights are sufficient to support the knowledge curation task without needing to consult the full text. In conclusion, we believe that these are promising results for a step in automating the recognition of curation-relevant sentences. Refining our approach to pre-digest papers will lead to faster processing and cost reduction in the curation process
