Monitoring Southern Flying Squirrel Populations with Nest Boxes
Author Institution: Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Friends University ; Department of Biological Sciences, Wichita State UniversityEvaluating the practicality, economic, and sampling efficiency of potential monitoring programs is a first step in validation. Thus, we established a system of nest boxes in southeast Ohio to evaluate the feasibility of using a system of nest boxes to monitor changes in southern flying squirrel (Glaucomys volans) populations. We recorded the time of box placement until first usage and types of use by flying squirrels as an indicator of presence as well as nest box occupancy trends on a month-to-month basis to assess usage patterns and productivity. Using monitoring results from 4 years, we evaluated alternative survey sampling techniques for occupancy and determined sample sizes necessary to estimate occupancy within specified relative bounds. We also studied the cost of establishing a nest box system and monitoring nest box use. At low nest box occupancy (9.4%), sample size necessary to monitor trend would be extreme (431 boxes for 30% relative bound), but sample size is not restrictive when occupancy rates exceed 17% (211 boxes to achieve 20% relative bound). Monitoring combined spring and summer litter sizes in November or December as a measure of recruitment would require a smaller effort to achieve a tighter relative bound (10%). Assumptions relating these demographic parameters to habitat change or disturbance still must be tested before the systematic placement of nest boxes can be considered the optimum approach to monitor southern flying squirrel response as measured by changes in population density or recruitment

Indicators of disturbance and recovery of a tallgrass prairie ecosystem following military vehicle traffic
Doctor of PhilosophyDepartment of AgronomyStephen J. ThienRange and Training Land Assessment (RTLA) and Land Rehabilitation and Maintenance (LRAM) are key components of The United States Army's Integrated Training Area Management (ITAM) Program, which outlines its commitment to support the sustainable use of military training lands. The primary purpose of the RTLA Program is to provide information and recommendations regarding the condition of training lands to range managers for scheduling of training areas and monitoring the effectiveness of rehabilitation projects. The goal of the LRAM component of ITAM is to reduce the long-term impacts of training on installations through the implementation of improvements to vegetation cover and repairs to landscape damage in disturbed areas. Fort Riley Military Installation, located in the largest remaining expanse of tallgrass prairie in the Flint Hills of northeastern Kansas, is a major training reservation, with seventy percent of its 40,434 ha used for mechanized maneuvers. A randomized complete block design composed of M1A1 tank traffic in a figure-eight pattern during wet and dry soil conditions was established in each of two soil types, a silty clay loam and a silt loam, and recovery of physical, chemical, and biological indicator variables was monitored from 2005 through 2007. In a second study, the effectiveness of LRAM procedures, including leveling, mulching, and reseeding, was evaluated following wheeled vehicle disturbance. The goals of this study were to identify disturbance indicators appropriate for assessing soil quality and, based on the status of these indicators, develop a method for modeling the stage and rate of ecological degradation and potential response to remediation. Disturbance increased significantly during wet compared to dry soil conditions, for increased traffic intensity, and for curve compared to straight-a-way areas in both soil types. The greatest impacts were on above and below ground community structure, providing an effective bioindicator of ecosystem health for military training land managers. Remediation of wheeled vehicle disturbance with leveling and mulching, but not reseeding, increased total vegetation production. The tallgrass prairie typically is considered to be among the most resilient of military training lands, but resiliency is dependent upon soil type and training conditions, and may require longer periods of recovery than previously thought

Influence of Abrams M1A1 Main Battle Tank Disturbance on Tallgrass Prairie Plant Community Structure
The Department of Defenseâs Range and Training Land Assessment program provides information and recommendations to range managers regarding the condition of training lands. This information is used to assist in scheduling training areas and in monitoring the effectiveness of rehabilitation projects. Fort Riley Military Installation is a major training reservation located in the Flint Hills of northeastern Kansas, within the tallgrass prairie ecosystem. A randomized complete block design composed of three treatments (M1A1 Abrams tank traffic during wet and dry soil conditions, and a nontrafficked control) with three replications was established in each of two soil types, a silty clay loam and a silt loam soil, on Fort Riley in 2003. Disturbance was created by driving the tank for five circuits in a figure-eight pattern during either during wet or dry soil conditions. Two additional experimental treatments were added during the study: five additional tank passes on one-half of each figure eight in 2004 and burning in 2006. Two areas, a curve and straightaway, within each traffic intensity (and later, burn treatment) subplot were designated for sampling. Aboveground biomass, species composition, and ground cover were measured during each growing season. Recovery of grass and total aboveground biomass in silty clay loam soil was delayed for curve areas and following disturbance in wet soil conditions, respectively. Species composition and ground cover continued to exhibit significant disturbance effects in 2007, with greatest damage observed for repeated traffic under wet soil conditions. Fire effects on vegetation were variable and generally greater for undisturbed control plots than for disturbed areas. The tallgrass prairie typically is considered to be among the most resilient of military training lands, but our research suggests that resiliency is dependent upon soil type and training conditions, and may require longer periods of recovery than previously thought. The Rangeland Ecology & Management archives are made available by the Society for Range Management and the University of Arizona Libraries.
