Sexual and Emotional Health after Allogeneic Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation: A Comprehensive Review and Guidelines from the Francophone Society of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (SFGM-TC)

    No full text
A person’s sexual and emotional life is greatly impacted after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). This topic is not addressed very much by patients and caregivers. Physical, endocrine and genital chronic graft versus host disease (cGVHD)-related disorders are multiple and intertwined with psychological disorders. The Francophone Society of Bone Marrow Transplantation and Cellular Therapy (SFGM-TC) has issued recommendations for a better gynecological monitoring of female recipients after allo-HCT. A patient booklet was also offered to patients in the form of questions and answers to facilitate discussions between patients and caregivers and to improve the management of sexual and emotional life after transplant

Ibrutinib Treatment through Nasogastric Tube in a Comatose Patient with Central Nervous System Localization of Mantle Cell Lymphoma

Nowadays, mantle cell lymphoma is considered to have one of the worst prognostic profiles among lymphoid malignancies. Mantle cell lymphoma rarely affects the central nervous system (CNS) as it represents about 0.9% of diagnosis and 4% among recurrent cases. Here, we present the case of a 69-year-old male patient who was diagnosed with mantle cell lymphoma in 2006. The patient relapsed three times, without affecting the CNS, then was treated accordingly, and achieved complete remission three times. Four years after his last complete remission, upon receiving his last dose of treatment, the medical team noted a rapid worsening of the patient’s neurological status followed by a deep coma state causing MCL neurological recurrence by exclusion diagnosis. The patient then received ibrutinib via a nasogastric tube at a dose of 560 mg daily. Two days after receiving his last dose of ibrutinib, the patient regained full consciousness, and 10 days later, he was discharged from the hospital. The patient achieved complete remission and showed no signs of neurological damages for 24 months following his ibrutinib treatment. We believe that the administration of ibrutinib through the nasogastric tube was a determinant factor in this patient’s remission and survival

Language of written medical educational materials for non-English speaking populations: an evaluation of a simplified bi-lingual approach

International audienceBACKGROUND : Debates have arisen in various non-English speaking countries over the chosen language of instruction in medical education, whether it has to be the English language or the mother tongue. English-based education supporters argue that English is the leading international language of medicine and research, and a crucial tool for Continuing Medical Education (CME), as well as for students who seek practice abroad. On the other hand, mother-tongue-based medical education supporters present it as a way to endorse communication and comprehension between medical practitioners and health care system users, to bridge the gap between practitioners and the paramedical staff, and to overcome linguistic dualism and the language thinking disparity while studying in another. This study aimed to evaluate one of the simplified bi-lingual approaches in terms of medical-educational-written texts for a non-English speaking population: Arabic speaking medical students in specific.METHODS : 1546 Arabic-speaking-medical students from different countries participated in a one-step-interactive-experimental-online test. The test assessed participants' scientific comprehension of three distinct written paragraphs: The first paragraph used conventional mother tongue (Arabic), the second combined English terminology and simplified mother tongue (hybrid), and the third used an English excerpt (English). Two multiple-choice questions (First question in Arabic, second in English) followed each paragraph. Response time was communicated for each paragraph. Participants were asked to select their favorable method. Repeated Measures ANOVA models and Paired Samples t-Test were used for statistical analysis.RESULTS : Participants scored a mean of [0.10] for the Arabic paragraph, [0.72] for the hybrid paragraph, and [0.24] for the English paragraph (P <  0.001). Results showed a significantly higher mean of points and correct answers within the fastest time for the hybrid paragraph [0.68] compared to the Arabic [0.08] and English [0.18] paragraphs (P <  0.001). Moreover, 50% of participants preferred the hybrid paragraph over the other two paragraphs.CONCLUSIONS : Taking into consideration the large number of participants and the statistically significant results, authors propose that simplified Arabic combined with English terminology may present a viable alternative method for medical-educational-written texts in Arabic-speaking population

COVID-19 paraclinical diagnostic tools: Updates and future trends

    No full text
International audienceMotivation: COVID-19 is one of the most widely affecting pandemics. As for many respiratory viruses-caused diseases, diagnosis of COVID-19 relies on two main compartments: clinical and paraclinical diagnostic criteria. Rapid and accurate diagnosis is vital in such a pandemic. On one side, rapidity may enhance management effectiveness, while on the other, coupling efficiency and less costly procedures may permit more effective community-scale management.Methodology and main structure: In this review, we shed light on the most used and the most validated diagnostic tools. Furthermore, we intend to include few under-development techniques that may be potentially useful in this context. The practical intent of our work is to provide clinicians with a realistic summarized review of the essential elements in the applied paraclinical diagnosis of COVID-19
