The changing X-ray time lag in MCG-6-30-15
MCG-6-30-15 is one of the most observed Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies in the
X-ray band. In this paper we examine the X-ray time lags in this source using a
total of 600 ks in observations (440 ks exposure) taken with the XMM-Newton
telescope (300 ks in 2001 and 300 ks in 2013). Both the old and new
observations show the usual hard lag that increases with energy, however, the
hard lag turns over to a soft lag at frequencies below ~1e-4 Hz. The highest
frequencies (~1e-3 Hz) in this source show a clear soft lag, as previously
presented for the first 300 ks observation, but no clear iron K lag is detected
in either the old or new observation. The soft lag is more significant in the
old observation than the new. The observations are consistent with a
reverberation interpretation, where the soft, reflected emission is delayed
with respect to the hard powerlaw component. These spectral timing results
suggest that two distinct variability mechanisms are important in this source:
intrinsic coronal variations (which lead to correlated variability in the
reprocessed emission), and geometrical changes in the corona. Variability due
to geometrical changes does not result in correlated variability in the
reflection, and therefore inhibits the clear detection of an iron K lag.Comment: Resubmitted to MNRAS after minor corrections. 11 pages, 10 figure
Revealing the X-ray Variability of AGN with Principal Component Analysis
We analyse a sample of 26 active galactic nuclei with deep XMM-Newton
observations, using principal component analysis (PCA) to find model
independent spectra of the different variable components. In total, we identify
at least 12 qualitatively different patterns of spectral variability, involving
several different mechanisms, including five sources which show evidence of
variable relativistic reflection (MCG-6-30-15, NGC 4051, 1H 0707-495, NGC 3516
and Mrk 766) and three which show evidence of varying partial covering neutral
absorption (NGC 4395, NGC 1365, and NGC 4151). In over half of the sources
studied, the variability is dominated by changes in a power law continuum, both
in terms of changes in flux and power law index, which could be produced by
propagating fluctuations within the corona. Simulations are used to find unique
predictions for different physical models, and we then attempt to qualitatively
match the results from the simulations to the behaviour observed in the real
data. We are able to explain a large proportion of the variability in these
sources using simple models of spectral variability, but more complex models
may be needed for the remainder. We have begun the process of building up a
library of different principal components, so that spectral variability in AGN
can quickly be matched to physical processes. We show that PCA can be an
extremely powerful tool for distinguishing different patterns of variability in
AGN, and that it can be used effectively on the large amounts of high-quality

Women rebuilding lives post-disaster: innovative community practices for building resilience and promoting sustainable development
Disasters result in devastating human, economic, and environmental effects. The paper highlights women's active participation in community-based disaster recovery efforts drawing from the results of the âRebuilding Lives Post-disaster: Innovative Community Practices for Sustainable Developmentâ by an international research partnership. Two case studies are presented from Pakistan and the USA to demonstrate how women contribute to building resilience and promoting sustainable development in diverse post-disaster contexts. The policy and practice implications are relevant for discussions regarding the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals and framework
Pharmacistsâ opinions of the value of CAPE Outcomes in hiring decisions
Objective. The Hiring Intent Reasoning Examination (HIRE) was designed to explore the utility of the CAPE 2013 outcomes attributes from the perspective of practicing pharmacists, examine how each attribute influences hiring decisions, and identify which of the attributes are perceived as most and least valuable by practicing pharmacists. Methods. An electronic questionnaire was developed and distributed to licensed pharmacists in four states to collect their opinions about 15 CAPE subdomains plus five additional business related attributes. The attributes that respondents identified were: necessary to be a good pharmacist, would impact hiring decisions, most important to them, and in short supply in the applicant pool. Data were analyzed using statistical analysis software to determine the relative importance of each to practicing pharmacists and various subsets of pharmacists. Results. The CAPE subdomains were considered necessary for most jobs by 51% or more of the 3723 respondents (range, 51% to 99%). The necessity for business-related attributes ranged from 21% to 92%. The percentage who would not hire an applicant who did not possess the attribute ranged from 2% to 71.5%; the percentage who considered the attribute most valuable ranged from 0.3% to 35%; and the percentage who felt the attribute was in short supply ranged from 5% to 36%. Opinions varied depending upon gender, practice setting and whether the pharmacist was an employee or employer. Conclusion. The results of this study can be used by faculty and administrators to inform curricular design and emphasis on CAPE domains and business-related education in pharmacy programs
Detection of a possible multiphase ultra-fast outflow in IRAS 13349+2438 with NuSTAR and XMM-Newton
We present joint NuSTAR and XMM-Newton observations of the bright, variable
quasar IRAS 13349+2438. This combined dataset shows two clear iron absorption
lines at 8 and 9 keV, which are most likely associated with two layers of
mildly relativistic blueshifted absorption, with velocities of 0.14c and 0.27c.
We also find strong evidence for a series of Ly absorption lines at
intermediate energies in a stacked XMM-Newton EPIC-pn spectrum, at the same
blueshift as the lower velocity iron feature. This is consistent with a
scenario where an outflowing wind is radially stratified, so faster, higher
ionization material is observed closer to the black hole, and cooler, slower

Enhancement of electroporation facilitated immunogene therapy via T-reg depletion
Regulatory T cells (T-regs) can negatively impact tumor antigen-specific immune responses after infiltration into tumor tissue. However, depletion of T-regs can facilitate enhanced anti-tumor responses, thus augmenting the potential for immunotherapies. Here we focus on treating a highly aggressive form of cancer using a murine melanoma model with a poor prognosis. We utilize a combination of T-reg depletion and immunotherapy plasmid DNA delivered into the B16F10 melanoma tumor model via electroporation. Plasmids encoding murine granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor and human B71 were transfected with electroporation into the tumor and transient elimination of T-regs was achieved with CD25-depleting antibodies (PC61). The combinational treatment effectively depleted T-regs compared to the untreated tumor and significantly reduced lung metastases. The combination treatment was not effective in increasing the survival, but only effective in suppression of metastases. These results indicate the potential for combining T-reg depletion with immunotherapy-based gene electrotransfer to decrease systemic metastasis and potentially enhance survival
Using a quantitative quadruple immunofluorescent assay to diagnose isolated mitochondrial Complex I deficiency
Isolated Complex I (CI) deficiency is the most commonly observed mitochondrial respiratory chain biochemical defect, affecting the largest OXPHOS component. CI is genetically heterogeneous; pathogenic variants affect one of 38 nuclear-encoded subunits, 7 mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA)-encoded subunits or 14 known CI assembly factors. The laboratory diagnosis relies on the spectrophotometric assay of enzyme activity in mitochondrially-enriched tissue homogenates, requiring at least 50âmg skeletal muscle, as there is no reliable histochemical method for assessing CI activity directly in tissue cryosections. We have assessed a validated quadruple immunofluorescent OXPHOS (IHC) assay to detect CI deficiency in the diagnostic setting, using 10â”m transverse muscle sections from 25 patients with genetically-proven pathogenic CI variants. We observed loss of NDUFB8 immunoreactivity in all patients with mutations affecting nuclear-encoding structural subunits and assembly factors, whilst only 3 of the 10 patients with mutations affecting mtDNA-encoded structural subunits showed loss of NDUFB8, confirmed by BN-PAGE analysis of CI assembly and IHC using an alternative, commercially-available CI (NDUFS3) antibody. The IHC assay has clear diagnostic potential to identify patients with a CI defect of Mendelian origins, whilst highlighting the necessity of complete mitochondrial genome sequencing in the diagnostic work-up of patients with suspected mitochondrial disease
Revealing criterial vagueness in inconsistencies
Sixty undergraduate students made category membership decisions for each of 132
candidate exemplar-category name pairs (e.g., chess â Sports) in each of two separate
sessions. They were frequently inconsistent from one session to the next, both for nominal
categories such as Sports and Fish, and ad hoc categories such as Things You Rescue from
a Burning House. A mixture model analysis revealed that several of these inconsistencies
could be attributed to criterial vagueness: participants adopting different criteria for
membership in the two sessions. This finding indicates that categorization is a probabilistic
process, whereby the conditions for applying a category label are not invariant. Individuals
have various functional meanings of nominal categories at their disposal and entertain
competing goals for ad hoc categories
Explaining Evidence Denial as Motivated Pragmatically Rational Epistemic Irrationality
This paper introduces a model for evidence denial that explains this behavior as a manifestation of rationality and it is based on the contention that social values (measurable as utilities) often underwrite these sorts of responses. Moreover, it is contended that the value associated with group membership in particular can override epistemic reason when the expected utility of a belief or belief system is great. However, it is also true that it appears to be the case that it is still possible for such unreasonable believers to reverse this sort of dogmatism and to change their beliefs in a way that is epistemically rational. The conjecture made here is that we should expect this to happen only when the expected utility of the beliefs in question dips below a threshold where the utility value of continued dogmatism and the associated group membership is no longer sufficient to motivate defusing the counter-evidence that tells against such epistemically irrational beliefs
