OBJECTIVES: Serotonin plays a central role in ejaculation and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors have been successfully used to treat premature ejaculation. Here, we evaluated the relationship between a polymorphism in the serotonin transporter gene-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR) and the response of patients with premature ejaculation to SSRI medication. METHODS: Sixty-nine premature ejaculation patients were treated with 20 mg/d paroxetine for three months. The Intravaginal Ejaculatory Latency Time and International Index of Erectile Function scores were compared with baseline values. The patients were scored as having responded to therapy when a 2-fold or greater increase was observed in Intravaginal Ejaculatory Latency Time compared with baseline values after three months. Three genotypes of 5-HTTLPR were studied: LL, LS and SS. The appropriateness of the allele frequencies in 5-HTTLPR were analyzed according to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium using the χ2-test. RESULTS: The short (S) allele of 5-HTTLPR was significantly more frequent in responders than in nonresponders (

The relationship between childhood traumas and aggression levels in adults

The effect of childhood traumas in adulthood psychopathology is considerable. There are studies indicating that there is cause and effect relation between adulthood aggression and childhood traumas. However, in Turkey, there are few studies on this subject. The results of these studies are controversial in some aspects. This research was designed to look into the relation between aggression level and childhood traumas in Turkish society. Childhood Trauma Questionnaire and Buss Perry Aggression Questionnaire were applied to 50 healthy individuals who were chosen randomly in Beylikduzu district of Istanbul province and who did not get any neuropsychiatric diagnosis. The childhood trauma levels of the participants were detected as significantly high but their aggression levels were detected as normal. A positive meaningful correlation was detected between the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire scores and Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire scores. These results are supporting the idea that childhood trauma may be among the predisposing factors of adulthood aggression. [Med-Science 2018; 7(3.000): 622-6

The different conditions such as impaired sleep quality, impaired quality of life and decreased psychological health have been reported in caregivers of children with disabilities. It was aimed in this study to determine psychodrama intervention causes any change on the sleep and life quality of mothers of children with cerebral palsy. Psychodrama intervention in sessions of 2 h a week for 8 weeks was applied to psychodrama group, and the study was completed with 8 mothers in the psychodrama group and 14 mothers in the control group. The mothers were evaluated in terms of sleep quality assessed by Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and quality life assessed by Short Form-36 (SF-36) before the treatment and at the end of the 8th week. The clinically significant improvements were detected in all SF-36 subscale scores in the psychodrama group compared to the control group, only score of bodily pain subscale showed a statistically significant percentage change. There was no difference between the groups in the percentage change in PSQI scores. This study has shown that psychodrama intervention had no effect on sleep quality while it might have clinically positive effects on all of the quality of life subscales

This study aims to investigate the potential effects of anticonvulsant drugs on neuropeptides (galanin and neuropeptide Y) and neurotrophic factors (BDNF and NGF) in pentylenetetrazol (PTZ)-kindled seizures in the rat. Methods: Forty-eight adult male Sprague?Dawley rats were included in the study. the animals were divided into 8 groups of six rats. Group 1 was defined as na?ve control, and received no medication. Group 2 (PTZ?+?saline) was treated with sub-convulsive doses of PTZ (35?mg/kg) and saline i.p. for 14?days. For anticonvulsant treatments, Groups 3?8 were treated with 200?mg/kg levetiracetam (PTZ?+?LEV), 1?mg/kg midazolam (PTZ?+?MDZ), 80?mg/kg phenytoin (PTZ?+?PHT), 80?mg/kg topiramate (PTZ?+?TPR), 40?mg/kg lamotrigine (PTZ?+?LMT) and 50?mg/kg sodium valproate (PTZ?+?SV), respectively. All anticonvulsant drugs were injected 30 min prior to PTZ injection throughout 14?days. Following treatment period, behavioral, biochemical and immunohistochemical studies were performed. Results: PTZ?+?saline group revealed significantly decreased galanin, NPY, BDNF and NGF levels compared to control. PTZ?+?MDZ group had significantly increased galanin, BDNF and NGF levels compared to saline group. Also, PTZ?+?LEV group showed increased BDNF levels. PTZ?+?saline group revealed significantly lower neuron count and higher GFAP (+) cells in hippocampal CA1?CA3 regions. All anticonvulsants significantly reduced hippocampal astrogliosis whereas only midazolam, levetiracetam, sodium valproate and lamotrigine prevented neuronal loss. Conclusion: Our results suggested that anticonvulsant drugs may reduce the severity of seizures, and exert neuroprotective effects by altering the expression of neuropeptides and neurotrophins in the epileptogenic hippocampus

WOS: 000357900100023PubMed ID: 26076020The hydrolysis degrees of goat milk and kefir during simulated gastrointestinal digestion and some bioactivities of the resulting peptides after fermentation and digestion were studied. A static in vitro digestion method by the COST FA1005 Action INFOGEST was used and goat milk and kefir were partially hydrolyzed during the gastric phase and had above 80% hydrolysis after duodenal digestion. There were no differences between the digestibility of goat milk and kefir (p > 0.05). Goat milk and kefir displayed about 7-fold antioxidant activity after digestion (p 0.05), however, after in vitro digestion calcium-binding capacity of the goat milk and kefir increased 2 and 5 fold, respectively (p < 0.05). Digested goat milk and kefir showed a higher dose-dependent inhibitory effect on alpha-amylase compared to undigested samples (p < 0.05). alpha-Glucosidase inhibitory activities and in vitro bile acid-binding capacities of the samples were not determined at the studied concentrations.Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey-TUBITAKTurkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Arastirma Kurumu (TUBITAK) [112O485]The authors participated in the COST Action FA1005 INFOGEST. Combined surgical and chemotherapy treatment for invasive primary urethral cancer: a case presentation

    No full text
Abstract Background The European Association of Urology (EAU) defines primary urethral carcinoma (PUC) as a carcinoma that arises in the urethra without a previous diagnosis of carcinoma elsewhere in the urinary system. It is considered as a rare cancer, accounting for less than 1% of all malignant tumors and 5% of malignant tumors of the urinary system. The difficulty in diagnosis and its rarity can lead to delayed diagnosis and decreased survival. We think that a case report to be made in the literature for this rare disease with no consensus on treatment will contribute to disease management. Case presentation In this article, we describe the diagnosis and treatment process of a 75-year-old patient who was diagnosed with primary urethral cancer and had urethral discharge and difficulty in urination. The biopsy result from the suspected hyperemic area in the urethra in cystourethroscopy was primary urethral cancer. Urethrectomy followed by urethroplasty was performed on the patient's 2-cm primary urethral cancerous tissue. In the postoperative first month, an F-18 FDG whole-body PET scan for oncological evaluation showed increased pathological F-18 FDG uptake in the periphery of the mass in the penile urethra and indistinguishable boundaries from the prostatic urethra. After this, adjuvant gemcitabine and carboplatin therapy was planned by the oncology team. Conclusions Based on our outcome in this case, we believe that chemotherapy combined with surgery increases the chance of successful treatment in locally advanced urethral cancer
