    Fusion of SPOT5 multispectral and Ikonos panchromatic images

    International audienceThe offer of high spectral and high spatial resolutions images has grown in the last decade. It is know possible to obtain data from different sources with different spatial and spec-tral resolutions. The field of data fusion of remotely sensed data grown also very fast in the last years. In this paper, an algorithm allowing the merging of SPOT 5 images and Ikonos images are proposed. This algorithm is based on the ARSIS concept and presents an implementation for a ratio of spatial resolution equal to 10. The ARSIS concept is first detailed. Then, the way of de-fining a new implementation based on this concept is presented, allowing to understand how to define new implementations and to develop new solutions based on this concept. The proposed algorithm is developed, describing the different steps for building a fused product from a SPOT 5 multispectral data at 10 m and from a IKONOS panchromatic data at 1 m. Some other methods are proposed. The evaluation of the quality of the different methods is achieved using a set of quantitative quality parameters. The visual quality of the products are evaluated by a set of inter-preters. Conclusions are drawn on the quality of the proposed products

    Evaluation of the quality of Quickbird fused products

    International audienceMost of the satellite sensors, presently operating in the optical domain, are providing a data set comprising multispectral images at a low spatial resolution and images at a higher spatial resolution but with a lower spectral content. The trend of satellite sensors is similar to the present situation. The idea of fusing multispectral images with a highest spatial resolution enables the creation of useful products for a set of applications. This paper aims at evaluating a set of methods for construction of synthetic multispectral images having a highest spatial resolution available within the data set. These methods are evaluated through the construction of fused products from a set of Quickbird panchromatic and multispectral images. Of interest are the most used methods: the Intensity-Hue-Saturation method, the Brovey transform, the multiplicative methods and a set of methods derived from the ARSIS concept. The different methods are shortly presented. These methods are tested in a dataset from the area of Madrid. The dataset proposed a good diversity of landscape allowing the measure of the impact of fusion methods on different cases. The resulting images are evaluated through visual criteria from a set of photointerpreters. They classified the fused products and pro-vided a ranking for the visual quality. Then the proposed protocol defined by Wald et al. (1997) is applied to all methods. A set of quantitative parameters is computed allowing an objective comparison of the results. Finally a new parameter allowing the quantification of the information brought by the fusion method is proposed. This parameter is based on the analysis of the difference of the real structures of a multispectral image and of the computed structures of the fused products. It is applied to the different methods and favors the evaluation of the impact of an algorithm on the resulting images. Some conclusions are drawn on the ranking of the different methods and on the appropriate parameters for the evaluation of the quality of fused products

    Internal carotid artery dissection (ICAD) is a rare entity that either results from traumatic injury or can be spontaneously preceded or not by a minor trauma such as sporting activities. It represents a major cause of stroke in young patients. The diagnosis should be suspected with the combination of Horner''s syndrome, headache or neck pain, and retinal or cerebral ischaemia. The confirmation is frequently made with a magnetic resonance angiography (MRA). Although anticoagulation with heparin followed by vitamin-K-antagonists is the most common treatment, there is no difference in efficacy of antiplatelet and anticoagulant drugs at preventing stroke and death in patients with symptomatic carotid dissection. We describe a patient with ICAD following deep sea scuba diving, who presented with Horner''s syndrome and neck pain and was successfully treated with anticoagulants

    Prevalence of Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts in raw and treated sewage sludges

    Treated sludge from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is commonly used in agriculture as fertilizers and to amend soils. The most significant health hazard for sewage sludge relates to the wide range of pathogenic microorganisms such as protozoa parasites.The objective of this study was to collect quantitative data on Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts in the treated sludge in wastewater treatment facilities in Spain. Sludge from five WWTPs with different stabilization processes has been analysed for the presence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in the raw sludge and after the sludge treatment. A composting plant (CP) has also been assessed. After a sedimentation step, sludge samples were processed and (oo)cysts were isolated by immunomagnetic separation (IMS) and detected by immunofluorescence assay (IFA). Results obtained in this study showed that Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts were present in 26 of the 30 samples (86.6%) of raw sludge samples. In treated sludge samples, (oo)cysts have been observed in all WWTP's analysed (25 samples) with different stabilization treatment (83.3%). Only in samples from the CP no (oo)cysts were detected.     Novel interactions between phytoplankton and bacteria shape microbial seasonal dynamics in coastal ocean waters

    Trophic interactions between marine phytoplankton and heterotrophic bacteria are at the base of the biogeochemical carbon cycling in the ocean. However, the specific interactions taking place between phytoplankton and bacterial taxa remain largely unexplored, particularly out of phytoplankton blooming events. Here, we applied network analysis to a 3.5-year time-series dataset to assess the specific associations between different phytoplankton and bacterial taxa along the seasonal scale, distinguishing between free-living and particle-attached bacteria. Using a newly developed network post-analysis technique we removed bacteria-phytoplankton correlations that were primarily driven by environmental parameters, to detect potential biotic interactions. Our results indicate that phytoplankton dynamics may be a strong driver of the inter-annual variability in bacterial community composition. We found the highest abundance of specific bacteria-phytoplankton associations in the particle-attached fraction, indicating a tighter bacteria-phytoplankton association than in the free-living fraction. In the particle-associated fraction we unveiled novel potential associations such as the one between Planctomycetes taxa and the diatom Leptocylindrus spp. Consistent correlations were also found between free-living bacterial taxa and different diatoms, including novel associations such as those between SAR11 with Naviculales diatom order, and between Actinobacteria and Cylindrotheca spp. We also confirmed previously known associations between Rhodobacteraceae and Thalassiosira spp. Our results expand our view on bacteria-phytoplankton associations, suggesting that taxa-specific interactions may largely impact the seasonal dynamics of heterotrophic bacterial communities

    Optimizing CIGB-300 intralesional delivery in locally advanced cervical cancer

    Background:We conducted a phase 1 trial in patients with locally advanced cervical cancer by injecting 0.5 ml of the CK2-antagonist CIGB-300 in two different sites on tumours to assess tumour uptake, safety, pharmacodynamic activity and identify the recommended dose.Methods:Fourteen patients were treated with intralesional injections containing 35 or 70 mg of CIGB-300 in three alternate cycles of three consecutive days each before standard chemoradiotherapy. Tumour uptake was determined using 99 Tc-radiolabelled peptide. In situ B23/nucleophosmin was determined by immunohistochemistry.Results:Maximum tumour uptake for CIGB-300 70-mg dose was significantly higher than the one observed for 35 mg: 16.1±8.9 vs 31.3±12.9 mg (P=0.01). Both, AUC 24h and biological half-life were also significantly higher using 70 mg of CIGB-300 (P<0.001). Unincorporated CIGB-300 diffused rapidly to blood and was mainly distributed towards kidneys, and marginally in liver, lungs, heart and spleen. There was no DLT and moderate allergic-like reactions were the most common systemic side effect with strong correlation between unincorporated CIGB-300 and histamine levels in blood. CIGB-300, 70 mg, downregulated B23/nucleophosmin (P=0.03) in tumour specimens.Conclusion:Intralesional injections of 70 mg CIGB-300 in two sites (0.5 ml per injection) and this treatment plan are recommended to be evaluated in phase 2 studies.Fil: Sarduy, M.     A New Detached M Dwarf Eclipsing Binary

    We describe a newly-discovered detached M-dwarf eclipsing binary system, the fourth such system known. This system was first observed by the TrES network during a long term photometry campaign of 54 nights. Analysis of the folded light curve indicates two very similar components orbiting each other with a period of 1.12079 +/- 0.00001 days. Spectroscopic observations with the Hobby-Eberly Telescope show the system to consist of two M3e dwarfs in a near-circular orbit. Double-line radial velocity amplitudes, combined with the orbital inclination derived from light-curve fitting, yield Mass total = 0.983 +/- 0.007 solar masses, with component masses M(1) = 0.493 +/- 0.003 and M(2) = 0.489 +/- 0.003 solar masses. The light-curve fit yields component radii of R(1) = 0.453 +/- 0.060 and R(2) = 0.452 +/- 0.050 solar radii. Though a precise parallax is lacking, broadband VJHK colors and spectral typing suggest component absolute magnitudes of M_V(1) = 11.18 +/- 0.30 and M_V(2) = 11.28 +/- 0.30.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure, 3 tables, accepted by ApJL, additional reference

    Phase I clinical trial in healthy adults of a nasal vaccine candidate containing recombinant hepatitis B surface and core antigens

    SummaryBackgroundThe nasal vaccine candidate (NASVAC), comprising hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface (HBsAg) and core antigens (HBcAg), has been shown to be highly immunogenic in animal models.MethodsA phase I double-blinded, placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial was carried out in 19 healthy male adults with no serologic markers of immunity/infection to HBV. This study was aimed at exploring the safety and immunogenic profile of nasal co-administration of both HBV recombinant antigens. The trial was performed according to Good Clinical Practice guidelines. Participants ranged in age from 18 to 45 years and were randomly allocated to receive a mixture of 50μg HBsAg and 50μg HBcAg or 0.9% physiologic saline solution, as a placebo, via nasal spray in a five-dose schedule at 0, 7, 15, 30, and 60 days. A total volume of 0.5ml was administered in two dosages of 125μl per nostril. Adverse events were actively recorded 1h, 6h, 12h, 24h, 48h, 72h, 7 days and 30 days after each dose. Anti-HBs and anti-HBc titers were evaluated using corresponding ELISA kits at days 30 and 90.ResultsThe vaccine candidate was safe and well tolerated. Adverse reactions included sneezing (34.1%), rhinorrhea (12.2%), nasal stuffiness (9.8%), palate itching (9.8%), headache (9.8%), and general malaise (7.3%). These reactions were all self-limiting and mild in intensity. No severe or unexpected events were recorded during the trial. The vaccine elicited anti-HBc seroconversion in 100% of subjects as early as day 30 of the immunization schedule, while a seroprotective anti-HBs titer (≥10IU/l) was at a maximum at day 90 (75%). All subjects in the placebo group remained seronegative during the trial.ConclusionThe HBsAg–HBcAg vaccine candidate was safe, well tolerated and immunogenic in this phase I study in healthy adults. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of safety and immunogenicity for a nasal vaccine candidate comprising HBV antigens
