Advances in Concentrated Solar Power: A Perspective of Heat Transfer

    Get PDF
Solar energy has the potential to reduce the dependence on the dwindling supply of fossil fuels through concentrated solar power (CSP) technology. CSP plants utilize solar thermal energy to produce electrical energy based on different thermodynamic power cycles. Solar collectors, reflectors, receivers, thermal fluid, and turbines are the main components of each CSP plant and involve intensive heat transfer at all stages. This chapter illustrates the thermal characteristics of the main components used in CSP technology. In addition, the solar thermal fluid characteristics and its stable operational ranges are discussed in this chapter. Heat capacity, vapor pressure, volume expansion, density and viscosity of the thermal fluid should not differ significantly at different temperatures during various operation stages because these variations can cause failure in the system, which is designed at the fixed material properties. Currently, CSP technology is associated with a higher cost compared to the electricity generated through gas power plants. Many efforts are made to search for sustainable and inexpensive materials to minimize the cost of CSP. One critical issue faced by CSP technology is the intermittent nature of the sun. Modern CSP plants integrate thermal energy storage (TES) unit to smoothen the power production or to shift the production from peak sunshine hours to peak demand hours

Wax Deposition in Crude Oil Transport Lines and Wax Estimation Methods

    Get PDF
Petroleum industry is one of the major industries serving the energy demands. Flow assurance is essential for providing continuous fuel supply. Wax deposition is the main issue that affects flow assurance or reduces the efficiency of transporting crude oil. As the maintenance cost of repairing and troubleshooting is very high, addressing issues related to flow assurance becomes critical in the petroleum industry. This chapter will explore methods used for reducing, cleaning, and monitoring deposition of wax. Wax dissolved in the crude oil gets crystallized causing accumulation across the pipe walls once the bulk temperature of the crude oil gets lower than wax appearance temperature (WAT). Mechanical, thermal, chemical, and microbial methods highlighting general practice in the industry are discussed in this chapter. Next, the direct techniques providing information about the numerical wax deposition models used along with scientific measurement techniques are emphasized. Later, the indirect measurement techniques are discussed providing information about the external probing and nondestructive techniques to obtain information about wax layer deposition inside the pipe. The role of artificial intelligence and use of fuzzy logic for effective wax prediction or in developing the existing wax numerical models are emphasized in the last section

Groundwater Recharge from Wala Dam Reservoir in Jordan

    Get PDF
A simulation model is presented to investigate the interaction between the surface water reservoir behind Wala dam in Jordan and the groundwater aquifer in the area. MODFLOW software with RES package is used with the available measured data to calibrate the aquifer parameters (transmissivity, specific storage, specific yield, and vertical hydraulic conductivity of the reservoir bed). Steady and transient verification processes will be conducted. Two scenarios are studied to predict the quantity of groundwater that can be pumped from Heedan wells to Amman. This study will show the benefit of natural recharge from surface water to groundwater and the rate of pumping water to Amman can be raised to five times the rate before the dam construction.

An assessment of current practices on landslides risk management: a case of Kuala Lumpur territory

    Get PDF
In Kuala Lumpur to date, there is little evidence to support landslide causes and very little research into the nature of landslide vulnerability. This article takes an interdisciplinary method and empirical approaches to examine, in addition where necessary, challenge a series of assumptions made regarding Landslide Risk Management (LRM) with a view to developing better understanding of social vulnerability on landslide hazard and its underlying causes alongside combine expert judgment on triggering factors. Moreover, the contribution of Malaysia Public Works Department (PWD/JKR) via the implication of National Slope Master Plan (NSMP 2009-2023) operational capabilities and its effectiveness on landslide risk mitigation measures is reviewed. The finding on the influence of landslide causative and triggering factors have shown steepness of slope was greatly functioned as a landslide primary causative factor on mass movement whereas, in Kuala Lumpur rainfall and human activities plays significant role in triggering landslide on a slope vulnerable to failure. The result suggests occupants of landslide prone areas have decent perceptions of landslide and its associated risk. Contrary wise, a loss of confidence by local residents on government authorities on implementing appropriate hazard mitigation measures, lack of voluntary data sharing and insufficiency public awareness campaigns conducted by Malaysian local authorities

    Solar Desalination

    Get PDF
There is an increasing demand for advancing conventional desalination technologies and developing novel solar powered desalination processes. In this chapter, the use of solar powered thermal desalination will be discussed comprehensively. The different existing methods of solar energy utilization for seawater desalination will be discussed, which includes solar stills, solar powered humidification-dehumidification (HDH) desalination, solar diffusion driven desalination, solar membrane distillation, concentrated solar power (CSP) based desalination, and solar pond distillation. The advantages and limitations of these thermal desalination technology will be discussed. In addition, the environmental impacts of solar desalination will be discussed due to its importance for adoption

Design and evaluation of an encapsulated artificial disc

    Get PDF
Artificial discs have been developed to replace and restore motion to degenerated intervertebral discs. The most common configuration for these devices include ball and socket articulation surfaces that can induce high frictional torques and wear rates. When these particles interact with the surrounding tissues they can induce inflammations leading to osteolysis, subsidence of the implant and then revision surgery. A new device has been developed to reduce friction and eliminate wear migration that incorporates an elastomer sheath to encapsulate the disc, retaining debris and an optimised bio-lubricant. The artificial disc has been assessed with an experimental programme that compared the resistive torques of the artificial discs both with and without encapsulation, for a range of motions. Durability tests were also conducted to 2M cycles and gravimetric wear rate was measured in accordance with BS 18192-1: 2011. Encapsulating the articulating surfaces reduced resistive torques and completely eliminated debris migration. Wear rates within the sheath ranged from 10.1 to 11.3 mg/million cycles, well within acceptable levels for this type of device. The encapsulated discs successfully contained all wear debris and displayed durability in excess of 2M accelerated life cycles. The concept of an encapsulated artificial disc has been shown to be feasible and could replace current technologies

ACCOUNTING AND ANALYTICAL ASPECTS OF REFLECTING EXPENDITURES IN PRACTICE OF COMPANIES OF UKRAINE AND JORDAN: COMPARISON, PROBLEMS AND IMPROVEMENT BACKGROUND

    Get PDF
The research paper urges the problems and prerequisites for improving the reflection of expenditures in the practice of companies in Ukraine, taking into account the need to unify accounting and analytical practice and to actively use international standards in the economic conditions of modern companies. The subject of the research of this paper is the reflection of expenditures in the systems of accounting and analysis of companies. The research paper aims at characterizing the problems and determining the preconditions for improving reflection of expenditures in the practice of companies of Ukraine on the basis of comparison of domestic experience (on the example of Ukraine International Airlines) with the experience of Jordanian companies (on the example of Royal Jordanian Airlines). Methodology of the study is based on systemic and comparative analysis. The Ukrainian and Jordanian experience of reflection of the expenditures in the practice of companies has been compared, on which basis it is noted that the wide spread of the international financial reporting standards in the practice of Jordanian companies contributes, on the one hand, to better provision of the heads of the companies and third parties with the information about company’s expenditures, and on the other hand, is more convenient in terms of providing accounting and analytical process. Keywords: analysis, accounting, expenditures, company, international standards, financial performance, Ukraine, Jordan
