Temperature effect on (2+1) experimental Kardar-Parisi-Zhang growth
We report on the effect of substrate temperature (T) on both local structure
and long-wavelength fluctuations of polycrystalline CdTe thin films deposited
on Si(001). A strong T-dependent mound evolution is observed and explained in
terms of the energy barrier to inter-grain diffusion at grain boundaries, as
corroborated by Monte Carlo simulations. This leads to transitions from
uncorrelated growth to a crossover from random-to-correlated growth and
transient anomalous scaling as T increases. Due to these finite-time effects,
we were not able to determine the universality class of the system through the
critical exponents. Nevertheless, we demonstrate that this can be circumvented
by analyzing height, roughness and maximal height distributions, which allow us
to prove that CdTe grows asymptotically according to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang
(KPZ) equation in a broad range of T. More important, one finds positive
(negative) velocity excess in the growth at low (high) T, indicating that it is
possible to control the KPZ non-linearity by adjusting the temperature.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
Nanometric pitch in modulated structures of twist-bend nematic liquid crystals
The extended Frank elastic energy density is used to investigate the
existence of a stable periodically modulate structure that appears as a ground
state exhibiting a twist-bend molecular arrangement. For an unbounded sample,
we show that the twist-bend nematic phase is characterized by a
heliconical structure with a pitch in the nano-metric range, in agreement with
experimental results. For a sample of finite thickness, we show that the wave
vector of the stable periodic structure depends not only on the elastic
parameters but also on the anchoring energy, easy axis direction, and the
thickness of the sample.Comment: 11 page
Group theory for structural analysis and lattice vibrations in phosphorene systems
Group theory analysis for two-dimensional elemental systems related to
phosphorene is presented, including (i) graphene, silicene, germanene and
stanene, (ii) dependence on the number of layers and (iii) two stacking
arrangements. Departing from the most symmetric graphene space
group, the structures are found to have a group-subgroup relation, and analysis
of the irreducible representations of their lattice vibrations makes it
possible to distinguish between the different allotropes. The analysis can be
used to study the effect of strain, to understand structural phase transitions,
to characterize the number of layers, crystallographic orientation and
nonlinear phenomena.Comment: 24 pages, 3 figure
Supraglottic mucopyocele with cardio-respiratory arrest
Use (or Misuse) of Drugs in Pediatrics
Group Theory analysis of phonons in two-dimensional Transition Metal Dichalcogenides
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have emerged as a new two
dimensional materials field since the monolayer and few-layer limits show
different properties when compared to each other and to their respective bulk
materials. For example, in some cases when the bulk material is exfoliated down
to a monolayer, an indirect-to-direct band gap in the visible range is
observed. The number of layers ( even or odd) drives changes in space
group symmetry that are reflected in the optical properties. The understanding
of the space group symmetry as a function of the number of layers is therefore
important for the correct interpretation of the experimental data. Here we
present a thorough group theory study of the symmetry aspects relevant to
optical and spectroscopic analysis, for the most common polytypes of TMDCs,
i.e. , and , as a function of the number of layers. Real space
symmetries, the group of the wave vectors, the relevance of inversion symmetry,
irreducible representations of the vibrational modes, optical selection rules
and Raman tensors are discussed.Comment: 32 pages, 4 figure
Experimental investigation of quantum key distribution with position and momentum of photon pairs
We investigate the utility of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen correlations of the
position and momentum of photon pairs from parametric down-conversion in the
implementation of a secure quantum key distribution protocol. We show that
security is guaranteed by the entanglement between downconverted pairs, and can
be checked by either direct comparison of Alice and Bob's measurement results
or evaluation of an inequality of the sort proposed by Mancini et al. (Phys.
Rev. Lett. 88, 120401 (2002)).Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, subimitted for publicatio
Modeling of polar clusters in disordered perovskites: The S-K model with tunneling
The polar clusters generated by random non-central impurities in quantum paraelectrics determine to a great extent the complex dielectric behaviour observed in systems like SCT, KTN or KTL. The competition between a quantum paraelectric phase and an impurity-driven ferroelectric or glass phase depends on the concentration and on the nature of the interaction between clusters. This work presents a simple model in which each cluster is represented by a quantum two level system involving an effective Ising dipolar moment and a tunneling energy A. The interactions between clusters are taken into account by following the guide-lines of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model for spin glasses. General expressions for the polarization (P) and the Edwards-Anderson order parameter (q) are given and the phase diagram involving temperature, the normalized mean interaction energy J0/J and tunneling energy A/J0 is built. This work was partially supported by Projecto Praxis XXI/2/2.1/FIS/26/9
