    Variability of the Centimeter-Submillimeter Spectrum and Polarization of 3C 273 during Outburst

    Original article can be found at: http://www.journals.uchicago.edu/ApJ/--Copyright University of Chicago Press/ AASCentimeter to submillimeter total flux and polarization monitoring data are used to investigate the nature of a prominent flare in the quasar 3C 273 during 1995/6. After removal of the quiescent level, the resulting “flare spectra" are well fitted by a simple homogeneous synchrotron source model, which in turn allows the movement of the self-absorption turnover to be tracked during the flare. Both the flare amplitude/time delay relationship and the overall spectral evolution are qualitatively consistent with existing models. The early evolution of the spectrum is best determined and is shown to be in excellent agreement with the Compton stage of the Marscher & Gear shock model. However, the polarization behavior during the flare is different at millimeter and centimeter wavelengths and the observations are difficult to reconcile with a simple transverse shock. They are, however, consistent with a conical shock for which the observed polarization properties vary with distance along the jet. Such variations may be caused, for example, by a change in cone angle owing to disruption caused by the growing component of the magnetic field parallel to the jet axis or by a moderate change in viewing angle.Peer reviewe

    Chemical compositions and plasma parameters of planetary nebulae with Wolf-Rayet and wels type central stars

    Aims: Chemical compositions and other properties of planetary nebulae around central stars of spectral types [WC], [WO], and wels are compared with those of `normal' central stars, in order to clarify the evolutionary status of each type and their interrelation. Methods: We use plasma diagnostics to derive from optical spectra the plasma parameters and chemical compositions of 48 planetary nebulae. We also reanalyze the published spectra of a sample of 167 non-WR PN. The results as well as the observational data are compared in detail with those from other studies of the objects in common. Results: The central star's spectral type is clearly correlated with electron density, temperature and excitation class of the nebula, [WC] nebulae tend to be smaller than the other types. All this corroborates the view of an evolutionary sequence from cool [WC 11] central stars inside dense, low excitation nebulae towards hot [WO 1] stars with low density, high excitation nebulae.     Statistical analyses of long-term variability of AGN at high radio frequencies

    We present a study of variability time scales in a large sample of Active Galactic Nuclei at several frequencies between 4.8 and 230 GHz. We investigate the differences of various AGN types and frequencies and correlate the measured time scales with physical parameters such as the luminosity and the Lorentz factor. Our sample consists of both high and low polarization quasars, BL Lacertae objects and radio galaxies. The basis of this work is the 22 GHz, 37 GHz and 87 GHz monitoring data from the Metsahovi Radio Observatory spanning over 25 years. In addition,we used higher 90 GHz and 230 GHz frequency data obtained with the SEST-telescope between 1987 and 2003. Further lower frequency data at 4.8 GHz, 8 GHz and 14.5 GHz from the University of Michigan monitoring programme have been used. We have applied three different statistical methods to study the time scales: The structure function, the discrete correlation function and the Lomb-Scargle periodogram. We discuss also the differences and relative merits of these three methods. Our study reveals that smaller flux density variations occur in these sources on short time scales of 1-2 years, but larger outbursts happen quite rarely, on the average only once in every 6 years. We do not find any significant differences in the time scales between the source classes. The time scales are also only weakly related to the luminosity suggesting that the shock formation is caused by jet instabilities rather than the central black hole.Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, Accepted for publication in A&

    A 2 1/2D interpretation of the Basque magnetic anomaly: geodynamical implications

    The Basque magnetic anomaly (BMA) follows aNW-SE trend over the Basque country with intensities up to 250 nT and displays a paired negative part to the north with intensities down to -60 nT. A model of the magnetic properties of the crust in the area has been carried out that takes into account previous geological and geophysical data. The models proposed indicate a mafic wedge ofmaterials with a magnetic susceptibility ofO.07 SI. This wedge is composed mainly ofUpper Cretaceous mafic intrusives with minor lower crustal rocks and reaches a minimum depth of5-7 km increasing to 12 km towards the northeast. Rocks on top ofthe anomalous wedge are deep marine facies rocks in transition to normal continental platform facies rocks to the southwest, and suggest that during the Upper Cretaceous this zone underwent crustal thinning due to rifting. Tectonic inversion during the Alpine deformation gave rise to displacement on a basal thrust and emplacement ofthe mafic wedge towards the northeast. The southeastern termination of the BMA may be produced by the lateral termination of the mafic rocks that constitute the anomalous wedge in a transform fauIt reIated to rifting processes

    Dual-Frequency VSOP Observations of AO 0235+164

    AO 0235+164 is a very compact, flat spectrum radio source identified as a BL Lac object at a redshift of z=0.94. It is one of the most violently variable extragalactic objects at both optical and radio wavelengths. The radio structure of the source revealed by various ground-based VLBI observations is dominated by a nearly unresolved compact component at almost all available frequencies. Dual-frequency space VLBI observations of AO 0235+164 were made with the VSOP mission in January-February 1999. The array of the Japanese HALCA satellite and co-observing ground radio telescopes in Australia, Japan, China and South Africa allowed us to study AO 0235+164 with an unprecedented angular resolution at frequencies of 1.6 and 5 GHz. We report on the sub-milliarcsecond structural properties of the source. The 5-GHz observations led to an estimate of T_B > 5.8 x 10^{13} K for the rest-frame brightness temperature of the core, which is the highest value measured with VSOP to date.Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures, to appear in Publ.
