A tackle box guide to: common saltwater fishes of southwest Florida
There are well over 150 species of fish caught by hook and line in local waters. The 86 species
included in this book were selected by the author and editors because they are the most frequently
encountered. For eachspecies, important informationabout distinguishing features, biology/habitat, and
fishing methods is provided. The often confusing common nicknames applied to each fish are noted,
as well as the fish's preferred common name. (56pp.
Trace Analysis of Halogens by Neutron Activation
A procedure was developed by which trace quantities of chlorine, bromine, iodine, tellurium, and uranium could be quantitatively determined simultaneously in a single meteorite sample. Meteoritic material was irradiated with thermal neutrons. Carrier ions were added, the material was fused with sodium peroxide and the chlorine, bromine, and iodine were isolated. Distillation from a sulfuric acid solution removed the halogens from the bulk of material. After distillation, selective solvent extractions were used to separate and purify each of the halogens. The purified halides were precipitated as the silver halides, weighed, mounted, and counted by β, γ and/or β-γ coincidence counting techniques
Benthonic Foraminifera from Lahave Estuary
The five most numerous species of benthonic foraminifera sampled from the LaHave River estuary in Nova Scotia were used to define two major faunal assemblage zones. These are the upper estuarine and transitional zones of a "transitional" type of estuary as defined by Scott et al (1977). The transitional zone is subdivided into upper and lower subzones.
Foraminiferal distribution in the study area appears to be determined by sediment patterns as water temperatures and salinity show little variation
Benchmarking the two-dimensional finite difference synthetic seismogram code
During the past six months, the two-dimensional finite difference synthetic seismogram code was installed and run on a
number of different computer systems. The results were compared for timing, accuracy and the ease with which the code was
adapted to each system. This report documents the software modifications and the method used to implement the finite difference code on each
computer, and presents the results of the benchmark survey.Funding was provided by the Office of Naval Research

Selection Cuttings for the Small Forest Owner
The purpose of this publication is to indicate to owners of small forests methods of harvesting wood and timber and developing future timber crops which .are likely to prove more profitable than those followed in the past. Cutting practices here described have been applied for some years in the Eli Whitney Forest, New Haven, Conn., where forest areas in various stages of treatment can be ·seen
Neural Network based Electron Identification in the ZEUS Calorimeter
We present an electron identification algorithm based on a neural network
approach applied to the ZEUS uranium calorimeter. The study is motivated by the
need to select deep inelastic, neutral current, electron proton interactions
characterized by the presence of a scattered electron in the final state. The
performance of the algorithm is compared to an electron identification method
based on a classical probabilistic approach. By means of a principle component
analysis the improvement in the performance is traced back to the number of
variables used in the neural network approach.Comment: 20 pages, latex, 16 figures appended as uuencoded fil
