    In response to recent litigation brought against the gun industry on behalf of individuals and municipalities victimized as a result of the negligent marketing, design, and distribution of guns, the gun industry has argued that they cannot be held responsible for the victims\u27 injuries because they have no special relationship with the victims. Without a special relationship, gun manufacturers claim to have no duty whatsoever to design, market, or distribute guns in a reasonable fashion. This article examines the fallacies inherent in the gun industry\u27s special relationship argument and discusses the factual, legal and policy grounds that support holding the gun industry responsible for its role in facilitating the misuse of guns

    Influence of organic films on the evaporation and condensation of water in aerosol

    Uncertainties in quantifying the kinetics of evaporation and condensation of water from atmospheric aerosol are a significant contributor to the uncertainty in predicting cloud droplet number and the indirect effect of aerosols on climate. The influence of aerosol particle surface composition, particularly the impact of surface active organic films, on the condensation and evaporation coefficients remains ambiguous. Here, we report measurements of the influence of organic films on the evaporation and condensation of water from aerosol particles. Significant reductions in the evaporation coefficient are shown to result when condensed films are formed by monolayers of long-chain alcohols [C(n)H((2n+1))OH], with the value decreasing from 2.4 × 10(−3) to 1.7 × 10(−5) as n increases from 12 to 17. Temperature-dependent measurements confirm that a condensed film of long-range order must be formed to suppress the evaporation coefficient below 0.05. The condensation of water on a droplet coated in a condensed film is shown to be fast, with strong coherence of the long-chain alcohol molecules leading to islanding as the water droplet grows, opening up broad areas of uncoated surface on which water can condense rapidly. We conclude that multicomponent composition of organic films on the surface of atmospheric aerosol particles is likely to preclude the formation of condensed films and that the kinetics of water condensation during the activation of aerosol to form cloud droplets is likely to remain rapid

    Since his death in 1865 Abraham Lincoln has been universally honored in black America. In many black homes and businesses, his photograph often hangs in honor next to the one of Martin Luther King Jr. But a new book by Ebony editor Lerone Bennett Jr. contends that Lincoln was a crude bigot who told demeaning darky jokes, had an unquenchable thirst for minstrel shows, consistently used the word nigger, and supported efforts to ship Negroes back to Africa. As Jack E. White pointed out in a recent Time magazine article, this book largely has been ignored by the mainstream press. The book was not reviewed in The Washington Post, The New Yorker, The Chicago Tribune, or USA Today.     Dynamics of particle size on inhalation of environmental aerosol and impact on deposition fraction

    Inhalation of elevated levels of particulate air pollution has been shown to elicit the onset of adverse health effects in humans, where the magnitude of the response is a product of where in the lung the particulate dose is delivered. At any point in time during inhalation the depositional flux of the aerosol is a function of the radius of the droplet, thus a detailed understanding of the rate and magnitude of the mass flux of water to the droplet during inhalation is crucial. In this study, we assess the impact of aerosol hygroscopicity on deposited dose through the inclusion of a detailed treatment of the mass flux of water to account for the dynamics of particle size in a modified version of the standard International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) whole lung deposition model. The ability to account for the role of the relative humidity (RH) of the aerosol prior to, and during, inhalation on the deposition pattern is explored, and found to have a significant effect on the deposition pattern. The model is verified by comparison to previously published measurements, and used to demonstrate that ambient RH affects where in the lung indoor particulate air pollution is delivered

    Comparison of regulatory regions in the mitochondrial genomes of grasses

    Abstract only availableRegulation of transcription in plant mitochondria is not well understood. The recent sequencing of the mitochondrial genomes of 10 closely related grasses allowed a comparative analysis of regulatory regions. To look for conserved regions and potential “swapped” regulatory regions, we have performed a comparative analysis of the upstream and downstream regions of all of the protein-coding genes in the mitochondrial genomes of eleven grasses: five mitochondrial types of maize (two fertile and three cytoplasmic male sterile), three other taxa within the genus (Zea mays ssp. parviglumis, Z. luxurians, Z. perennis), two close relatives (Tripsacum dactyloides, Sorghum bicolor), and an outgroup, rice. These genomes contain an average of 35 protein-coding genes, composed of 40 transcriptional units. Our analyses examined 1000 base pairs (bp) upstream of the first exon of each transcriptional unit and 1000 bp downstream of its last exon. The reference genome was NB, the most common fertile maize mitochondrial genotype. Compared with the genes from NB, more than half of the mitochondrial genes in the other genomes contain sequences that flank different genes in NB; we refer to these as “swapped” regions. More than 25% of the translocated sequences are longer than 100 bp, and 21 are greater than 500 bp. The longer sequences are more likely to have a regulatory function. In addition, some of these regions were found multiple times: 12 of the translocated gene-flanking regions were found flanking five or more other genes; four had sequences that were flanking ten or more. Furthermore, in Z. luxurians, Z. perennis and T. dactyloides, the co-transcribed 18S and 5S ribosomal RNA genes have been translocated immediately upstream of the start of cox1, with the 5S rRNA 3' end only 80 bp from the start of cox1 exon 1. This is a position that is difficult to rectify with the divergent transcriptional needs of the two types of genes.Plant Genomics Internship @ M

    JIGSAW, GeneZilla, and GlimmerHMM: puzzling out the features of human genes in the ENCODE regions

    BACKGROUND: Predicting complete protein-coding genes in human DNA remains a significant challenge. Though a number of promising approaches have been investigated, an ideal suite of tools has yet to emerge that can provide near perfect levels of sensitivity and specificity at the level of whole genes. As an incremental step in this direction, it is hoped that controlled gene finding experiments in the ENCODE regions will provide a more accurate view of the relative benefits of different strategies for modeling and predicting gene structures. RESULTS: Here we describe our general-purpose eukaryotic gene finding pipeline and its major components, as well as the methodological adaptations that we found necessary in accommodating human DNA in our pipeline, noting that a similar level of effort may be necessary by ourselves and others with similar pipelines whenever a new class of genomes is presented to the community for analysis. We also describe a number of controlled experiments involving the differential inclusion of various types of evidence and feature states into our models and the resulting impact these variations have had on predictive accuracy. CONCLUSION: While in the case of the non-comparative gene finders we found that adding model states to represent specific biological features did little to enhance predictive accuracy, for our evidence-based 'combiner' program the incorporation of additional evidence tracks tended to produce significant gains in accuracy for most evidence types, suggesting that improved modeling efforts at the hidden Markov model level are of relatively little value. We relate these findings to our current plans for future research
