Synthesis of heterocyclic bases of possible antimalarial activity

    Get PDF
    I. A survey of the literature dealing with anti - malarial compounds is given, with special reference to the relationship between activity and chemical constitution. • II. Various unsuccessful attempts to synthesise derivatives of 2:3- pyrido -4 hydroxy quinoline are described, and the constitution of the compound obtained from 2- chloro- pyri dine and anthranilic acid discussed. • III. 2- Hydroxy- 4methyl -5:6- pyrido quinoline and 2 -' methy1-4hydroxy -5:6- pyrido quinoline have been synthesised. The hydroxyl groups in these compounds have been replaced by piperidino, diethylaminoethylamino and diethylaminopropylamino side chains. • IV. The nitration of 2- methyl -4 hydroxy quinoline and of 2:3- dimethyl -4 hydroxy quinoline has been accomplished and the constitutions of the resulting compounds have been established by synthesis as 6- nitro-2- methyl -4 hydroxy quinoline and 6- nitro -2:3- dimethyl-4- hydroxy quinoline. • V. Various derivatives of 2-methyl-6-nitro quinoline having a basic side chain in position 4 and of 4methy1 -6 -nitro quinoline having a basic side chain in position 2 have been prepared. The hydroxyl group in 2- methy1- 4- hydroxy- 6- acetylamino quinoline has also been replaced by piperidino and diethylaminoethylamino side chains

Development and Demonstration of an Efficient Readout Error Mitigation Technique for use in NISQ Algorithms

The approximate state estimation and the closely related classical shadows methods allow for the estimation of complicated observables with relatively few shots. As these methods make use of random measurements that can symmetrise the effect of readout errors, they have been shown to permit simplified approaches to readout error mitigation which require only a number of samples that scales as O(1)\mathcal{O}(1) with increasing numbers of qubits. However, these techniques require executing a different circuit at each shot, adding a typically prohibitive amount of latency that prohibits their practical application. In this manuscript we consider the approximate state estimation of readout-mitigated expectation values, and how to best implement that procedure on the Rigetti quantum computing hardware. We discuss the theoretical aspects involved, providing an explicit computation of the effect of readout error on the estimated expectation values and how to mitigate that effect. Leveraging improvements to the Rigetti control systems, we then demonstrate an efficient implementation of this approach. Not only do we find that we can suppress the effect of correlated errors and accurately mitigate the readout errors, we find that we can do so quickly, collecting and processing 10610^6 samples in less than 1.51.5 minutes. This development opens the way for practical uses of methods with this type of randomisation.Comment: 19 pages, 3 figure

"It's not healthy and it's decidedly not masculine": a media analysis of UK newspaper representations of eating disorders in males

Objectives: Recent qualitative research found young men reporting that an expectation that eating disorders (EDs) mainly affect young women led them, and others, to only recognise their symptoms when their ED had become entrenched. This raises questions about how these stereotypes persist. We therefore explored how EDs in males were represented in articles published in UK newspapers over a 10-year period (7.12.2002-7.12.2012), specifically attending to whether newsprint media represent EDs in males as 'gender appropriate', 'gender anomalous' or 'gender neutral'.    Design: A qualitative thematic analysis of UK newspaper articles.  Methods: We searched two databases, Newsbank and LexisNexis, for newspaper articles including ED and male terms in the lead/first paragraph. Following de-duplication, 420 articles were scrutinised; 138 met inclusion criteria for detailed textual analysis and were imported into NVivo10.  Findings: The number of articles peaked in 2008 when a UK politician announced that he had experienced bulimia nervosa. Analysis of how the articles portrayed male ED-related characterisations and experiences revealed that they conveyed ambiguous messages about EDs in males. Despite apparently aiming to dispel stereotypes that only young women experience EDs and to address stigma surrounding EDs in males, many aspects of the articles, including repetition of phrases such as 'a young woman's illness', serve to reinforce messages that EDs are inherently 'female' and so 'anomalous' for men.  Conclusions: Newspaper articles represent men with EDs as atypical of men, as a result of having an ED (and any feminising or demasculinising characteristics associated with this), and as atypical of people with EDs, who are still usually portrayed as teenage girls. Such media representations frame a cultural paradigm in which there is an expectation that men may feel shame about or strive to conceal EDs, potentially contributing to men with EDs delaying help-seeking, gaining late access to treatments and reducing chances of successful outcomes

Employment experiences of parents of children with ASD or ADHD: An exploratory study

    Get PDF
Parents of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are often hindered by their carer status as they seek to obtain and maintain employment opportunities. These parents can incur financial, social and psychological distress related to their inabilities to commit to the demands of a typical work environment. This paper seeks to identify the course of employment for parents following a child’s diagnosis. This paper also seeks to delineate factors that influence continued employment despite carer status, as well as the factors that prevent continued employment. A sample of 10 parents of children with a primary diagnosis of ASD and a sample of 10 parents of children with a primary diagnosis of ADHD were interviewed concerning their employment experiences before and after the diagnoses of their children. The interviews were analysed using interpretive phenomenological analysis and produced several discrete themes. Participants identified a desire for normality, as well as financial motivation, as the primary factors determining continued employment. These parents also reported various barriers to employment such as lack of availability of adequate childcare, colleague and manager misunderstanding, inflexible organisational policies, and inaccessibility of opportunity. These findings offer a qualitative overview of the vocational struggles of parents of children with ADHD and ASD while implying the necessity of support and education for this often-overlooked group of carers, as well as those who employ them
