Functional Crosstalk between Lysine Methyltransferases on Histone Substrates: The Case of G9A/GLP and Polycomb Repressive Complex 2

    Get PDF
Significance: Methylation of histone H3 on lysine 9 and 27 (H3K9 and H3K27) are two epigenetic modifications that have been linked to several crucial biological processes, among which are transcriptional silencing and cell differentiation. Recent Advances: Deposition of these marks is catalyzed by H3K9 lysine methyltransferases (KMTs) and polycomb repressive complex 2, respectively. Increasing evidence is emerging in favor of a functional crosstalk between these two major KMT families. Critical Issues: Here, we review the current knowledge on the mechanisms of action and function of these enzymes, with particular emphasis on their interplay in the regulation of chromatin states and biological processes. We outline their crucial roles played in tissue homeostasis, by controlling the fate of embryonic and tissue-specific stem cells, highlighting how their deregulation is often linked to the emergence of a number of malignancies and neurological disorders. Future Directions: Histone methyltransferases are starting to be tested as drug targets. A new generation of highly selective chemical inhibitors is starting to emerge. These hold great promise for a rapid translation of targeting epigenetic drugs into clinical practice for a number of aggressive cancers and neurological disorders

    Get PDF
&nbsp

The objective was to examine predictors of perceived quality of care and contraceptive use and to provide more information on the influence of social marketing programs on quality of care and contraceptive use by comparing Greenstar social marketing outlets with other commercial health establishments. This study is based on an urban exit survey of 5,321 clients conducted in May and June 2001. Quality of care was measured in terms of features clients liked at the health establishments they visited. Predictors of contraceptive use include indicators of quality of care, social environment, exposure to channels of communication, exposure to Greenstar information, and background characteristics. Analysis involved descriptive statistics and logistic regression. Of the clients interviewed, 5 1 percent were male; 89 percent were at least 25 years old; 93 percent had at least one child; and 72 percent had some schooling. The results show that perceived quality of care varied according to sex, years of schooling, and how often clients listened to the radio or watched TV. Significant predictors of contraceptive use were years of schooling, number of children, how often a client listened to the radio or watched TV, awareness of the Greenstar logo and what it represented, and perceived quality of care--closeness of the health establishment to home or work, affordable fees, availability of a doctor at the outlet, and knowledgeability of the provider. Results suggest that social marketing programs have an impact on both quality of care and creating a demand for contraceptives. Program interventions that increase the perceived quality of care at a health establishment may attract more family planning clients and increase contraceptive use among couples in Pakistan. Worker and workplace Artificial Intelligence (AI) coexistence: Emerging themes and research agenda

    Get PDF
Workplace Artificial Intelligence (AI) helps organisations increase operational efficiency, enable faster-informed decisions, and innovate products and services. While there is a plethora of information about how AI may provide value to workplaces, research on how workers and AI can coexist in workplaces is evolving. It is critical to explore emerging themes and research agendas to understand the trajectory of scholarly research in this area. This study’s overarching research question is how workers will coexist with AI in workplaces. A search protocol was employed to find relevant articles in Scopus, ProQuest, and Web of Science databases based on appropriate and specific keywords and article inclusion and exclusion criteria. We identified four themes: (1) Workers’ distrust in workplace AI stems from perceiving it as a job threat, (2) Workplace AI entices worker-AI interactions by offering to augment worker abilities, (3) AI and worker coexistence require workers’ technical, human, and conceptual skills, and (4) Workers need ongoing reskilling and upskilling to contribute to a symbiotic relationship with workplace AI. We then developed four propositions with relevant research questions for future research. This review makes four contributions: (1) it argues that an existential argument better explains workers’ distrust in AI, (2) it gathers the required skills for worker and AI coexistence and groups them into technical, human, and conceptual skills, (3) it suggests that technical skills benefit coexistence but cannot outweigh human and conceptual skills, and (4) it offers 20 evidence-informed research questions to guide future scholarly inquiries

Antecedents of the propensity to learn management practices and their impacts on firm outcomes in emerging markets : a Bayesian model averaging approach

    Get PDF
This article explores the factors that motivate firms to learn new management practices. The hypotheses are empirically tested using a representative sample of 3,676 small, medium and large firms from four South Asian countries and across all main sectors of economic activity. Given that we know little about the antecedents of the propensity to learn management practices in emerging markets, the study employs Bayesian Model Averaging approach to overcome the potential issue of model uncertainty. The results reveal that market competition, resource allocation towards internal and external R&D, good quality mobile network coverage and the use of external certified financial auditors have all positive and significant effects on the propensity to learn management practices. The results also suggest that private intellectual property rights protection in the context of inefficient legal systems can deter firms from learning, perhaps in fear of legal ramifications. Finally, the study shows that firms with a higher propensity of learning management practices are more likely to become profitable while exhibiting higher levels of both potential and actual innovation

Purpose. The production of electricity from solar energy is necessary because of the global consumption of this energy. This article’s study is based on increased energy extraction by improving maximum power point tracking (MPPT). From different MPPT techniques proposed, the perturb and observe (P&O) technique is developed because of its low implementation cost and ease of implementation. Methods. A modified variable step-size P&O MPPT algorithm is investigated which uses fuzzy logic to automatically adjust step-size to better track maximum power point, compared with the conventional fixed step-size method. The variable step P&O improves the speed and the tracking accuracy. This controller is implemented on a boost DC-DC power converter to track the maximum power point. The suggested controlled solar energy system includes a boost converter, a voltage-source inverter, and a grid filter. The control scheme of a three-phase current-controlled pulse-width modulation inverter in rotating synchronous coordinate d-q with the proposed MPPT algorithm and feed-forward compensation is studied. Results. The photovoltaic grid-connected system controller employs multi-loop control with the filter inductor current of the inverter in the inner loop to achieve a fast dynamic response and the outer loop to control bus voltage for MPPT, the modeling, and control of three phase grid connected to photovoltaic generator is implemented in the MATLAB/Simulink environment and validated by simulation results.

Polarization properties of Raman scattering by surface phonon polaritons in GaAsP nanowires

    Get PDF
Strong resonant enhancement of Raman scattering on photonic resonance was observed in GaAsP semiconductor nanowires. The enhancement allowed for detailed studies of the surface phonon polariton (SPhP) scattering peak on individual nanowires. In particular, for the first time, the effect of the nanowire cross section shape on SPhP properties has been investigated. It was found that the cross section flattening induces a strong polarisation and a spectral shift of SPhPs supported by such nanowire. The assisting numerical simulations allowed to link the induced polarisation effect to a splitting of the resonant HE11 mode in the flattened nanowire. The observed spectral shift of SPhP has been also theoretically reproduced in elliptical approximation for the flattened cross section. The obtained results pave a ground for engineering of SPhP polarisation response and accurate spectral control of SPhPs in applications utilising the nanowire morphology
