    Threshold photoelectron photoion coincidence spectroscopy of trichloroethene and tetrachloroethene

    The threshold photoelectron, the threshold photoelectron photoion coincidence and ion breakdown spectra of trichloroethene and tetrachloroethene have been recorded from 9 – 22 eV. Comparisons with the equivalent data for the three dichloroethene molecules and theoretical calculations highlight the nature of the orbitals involved during photoionisation in this energy range. The ground electronic state of C2_2HCl3+_3^+ (C2_2Cl4+_4^+) is bound, with excited valence states dissociating to C2_2HCl2+_2^+ (C2_2Cl3+_3^+) and C2_2HCl+^+ (C2_2Cl2+_2^+). Appearance energies suggest that C2_2HCl+^+ forms from C2_2HCl3+_3^+ by loss of two chlorine atoms, whereas C2_2Cl2+_2^+ forms from C2_2Cl4+_4^+ by loss of a Cl2_2 molecule. The translational kinetic energy release into C2_2HCl2+_2^+ (C2_2Cl3+_3^+) + Cl is determined as a function of energy. In both cases, the fraction of the available energy released into translational energy of the two products decreases as the photon energy increases

    Nonintrusive Load Monitoring of Variable Speed Drive Cooling Systems

    To improve the energy efficiencies of building cooling systems, manufacturers are increasingly utilizing variable speed drive (VSD) motors in system components, e.g. compressors and condensers. While these technologies can provide significant energy savings, these benefits are only realized if these components operate as intended and under proper control. Undetected faults can foil efficiency gains. As such, it's imperative to monitor cooling system performance to both identify faulty conditions and to properly inform building or multi-building models used for predictive control and energy management. This paper presents nonintrusive load monitoring (NILM) based 'mapping' techniques for tracking the performance of a building's central air conditioning from smart electrical meter or energy monitor data. Using a multivariate linear model, a first mapping disaggregates the air conditioner's power draw from that of the total building by exploiting the correlations between the building's line-current harmonics and the power consumption of the air conditioner's VSD motors. A second mapping then estimates the air conditioner's heat rejection performance using as inputs the estimated power draw of the first mapping, the building's zonal temperature, and the outside environmental temperature. The usefulness of these mapping techniques are demonstrated using data collected from a research facility building on the Masdar City Campus of Khalifa University. The mapping techniques combine to provide accurate estimates of the building's air conditioning performance when operating under normal conditions. These estimates could thus be used as feedback in building energy management controllers and can provide a performance baseline for detection of air conditioner underperformance

    An 83 year old caucasian gentleman presented with vomiting and left sided abdominal pain. A subsequent upper GI endoscopy demonstrated a large smooth mass impacted within the duodenum. A cholecysto-duodenal fistula was discovered at laparotomy, with a large gallstone impacted in the duodenum. A diagnosis of Bouveret's syndrome was made. The management of this rare cause of gastric outlet obstruction is discussed

    Extended lymphadenectomy for locally advanced and recurrent rectal cancer

    Purpose The purpose of this study is to assess the value of extended (lateral) lymphadenectomy (EL) in the operative management of locally advanced and recurrent rectal cancer. Methods Patients that underwent exenterative surgery for locally advanced or recurrent rectal cancer between 2006 and 2009 were included in the study. A decision for EL was taken at the local multidisciplinary meeting based on the radiological findings. Perioperative and oncological outcomes were assessed and compared between the EL and non-EL group prospectively. Results Forty-one consecutive patients were included in the study (EL = 17). The median age was 57 (40–71) for EL and 66 (39–81) years for non-EL. Of patients, 27 (EL = 13) and 14 (EL = 4) underwent pelvic exenteration and abdominosacral resection, respectively. Twelve (EL = 7) patients were diagnosed with locally advanced primary rectal cancer. Thirty-one (EL = 12) patients received neoadjuvant radiotherapy. The median intraoperative time, blood loss and hospital stay were 9 h (3–13), 1.5 l (0.3–7) and 14 days (12–72), respectively, for the EL group, and 8 h (4–15), 1.6 l (0.25–17) and 14 days (10–86), respectively, for the non-EL (p ≥ 0.394). Morbidity was similar between the two groups (EL = 4, non-EL = 9; p = 0.344). Complete tumour resection (R0) was achieved in 30 (73.17%) patients, 12 (70.58%) in the EL group and 18 (75%) in the non-EL group (p = 0.649). There was no significant difference in 5-year survival (EL = 60.7%, non-EL = 75.2%; p = 0.447), local recurrence (EL = 53.6%, non-EL = 65.4%; p = 0.489) and disease-free survival (EL = 53.6%, non-EL = 51.4%; p = 0.814). Conclusions The present study demonstrated that EL does not provide a statistically significant advantage in survival or recurrence rates, for patients with locally advanced primary or recurrent rectal cancer

    Altered Lipid Accumulation in Nannochlropsis Salina CCAP849/3 Following EMS and UV Induced Mutagenesis

    Microalgae have potential as a chemical feed stock in a range of industrial applications. Nannochloropsis salina was subject to EMS mutagenesis and the highest lipid containing cells selected using fluorescence-activated cell sorting. Assessment of growth, lipid content and fatty acid composition identified mutant strains displaying a range of altered traits including changes in the PUFA content and a total FAME increase of up to 156% that of the wild type strain. Combined with a reduction in growth this demonstrated a productivity increase of up to 76%. Following UV mutagenesis, lipid accumulation of the mutant cultures was elevated to more than 3 fold that of the wild type strain, however reduced growth rates resulted in a reduction in overall productivity. Changes observed are indicative of alterations to the regulation of the omega 6 Kennedy pathway. The importance of these variations in physiology for industrial applications such as biofuel production is discussed

    Characterisation of algicidal bacterial exometabolites against the lipid-accumulating diatom Skeletonema sp.

    Microalgae are of increasing interest due to their occurrence in the environment as harmful algal blooms and as a source of biomass for the production of fine and bulk chemicals. A method for the low cost disruption of algal biomass for environmental remediation or bioprocessing is desirable. Naturally-occurring algal lytic agents from bacteria could provide a cost-effective and environmentally desirable solution. A screen for algal lytic agents against a range of marine microalgae has identified two strains of algicidal bacteria isolated from the coastal region of the Western English Channel. Both strains (designated EC-1 and EC-2) showed significant algicidal activity against Skeletonema sp. and were identified as members of Alteromonas sp. and Maribacter sp. respectively. Characterisation of the two bioactivities revealed that they are small extracellular metabolites displaying thermal and acid stability. Purification of the EC-1 activity to homogeneity and initial structural analysis has identified it as a putative peptide with a mass of 1266. amu

    The use of polyADPribose polymerase inhibitors in cancer treatment provides a unique opportunity to target DNA repair processes in cancer cells while leaving normal tissue intact. The PARP-1 enzyme repairs DNA single strand breaks (SSB). Therefore PARP-1 inhibition in BRCA1 negative cancers results in the formation of cytotoxic DNA double strand breaks (DSB) causing synthetic lethality. The use of PARP1 inhibitors is gaining momentum in the treatment of a variety of tumours with BRCA1 involvement including breast, ovarian, pancreatic and prostate cancer. Our previous work showed that the PARP-1 inhibitor Olaparib causes both hypersensitivity of BRCA1+/- cells following exposure to gamma radiation due to the persistence of DNA strand breaks in cells, measured by the DNA damage biomarker γ-H2AX. Therefore dual treatment of cancers with radiotherapy and PARP1 inhibition may lead to cases of increased normal tissue toxicity in cancer patients. In this study we exposed two normal lymphoblastoid cell lines and three heterozygous BRCA1 lymphoblastoid cell lines to the PARP-1 inhibitor Olaparib and gamma radiation and after measured BRCA1 protein expression and apoptosis levels following treatment. BRCA1 protein foci analysis was performed on cells exposed to 2 Gy radiation in the presence or absence of 5 μM Olaparib. Using immunofluorescence and imaging flow cytometry, foci were measured in untreated cells and at 0.5, 3, 5 and 24 hours post-irradiation. Exposing normal and BRCA1+/- cells to Olaparib followed by gamma radiation results in a dramatic change in BRCA1 protein foci expression, with a significant reduction in BRCA1 protein expression observed in the heterozygote cells, together with an increase in apoptosis levels in these cells. In conclusion, combining PARP1 inhibitors with radiotherapy in treating of BRCA1-related cancers has clinical relevance, however this study and our previous publications serve to highlight the potential problems of increased side effects in these scenario
