    Mapping immaterial flows : how consumption invisibilizes labor : the satellite and shipping container

    The kiosk system went down and everyone missed their flight. I had this experience recently at Chicago O’Hare International airport when I was flying to Austin. It affirmed the importance of understanding networks and how their working (or in this case, the lack thereof) immobilizes goods and people. Usually, when you check in for a flight, there is a kiosk, a station where you can print out your ticket, bag tags, and receipt. This automation of airline customers and their luggage is routine and due to its speed, allows a lot more people to obtain services. A standard of speed and ease of access is therefore coupled and expected. When this automation is no longer available, people lose their shit or more elegantly stated, the artifice of entitlement becomes gruesomely apparent. I understand everyone has a place to go and we won’t get their soon enough. However, the system is down and the airline workers are doing their best. Of course, once the network is back in place, the kiosks will resume operation and yes, they will arrange a later flight. But in a global economy where networked spaces are equated solely to make money at an expedient pace, how do we get people to understand other ways to respond to a malfunction? The common assumption is that systems are supposed to be perfect and a glitch or a malfunction is an exception, however it is quite the reverse. What if networks weren’t based on dualism? The binary being either: an all digital internet of everything kind of space or a cyberpunk infused reversion to the analog. Instead, what should be thought of and put into place is a multiplicity of network configurations such as A to Z, alif to bari yay, 1 to a 1000, uno to millón. This is what I propose in my research and arts practice: how do we build multiplicity and equity in systems? Networks are not arbitrarily put into place, they have funders, users, buyers, beneficiaries, and losers involved. Therefore, they are porous flows, exchanges, and axioms, always open to change. My research lies in between histories of media, technology, and globalization. I investigate these themes through performance, sculptural installations, reading groups, and workshops that focus on the role of technology. Specifically, my practice is focused on objects that are produced from global circuits and their embedded codes, encompassing both the technological and sociological. I investigate the history of objects such as the satellites and shipping containers and make immaterial streams tangible. The specific objects of the satellite and shipping container carry information that frames notion of historic and present day globalization facilitated by technology. The sections of this text are not necessary meant to be read sequentially, there are organized like nodes. In the first node, I will examine the role of satellites in my projects, Satellites and TELL A STAR. Satellites project examines Our World, the first global transmission (1967) through a sculptural installation, video and website. This project critiques the notion of techno-utopianism, a idea that technology will resolve all inequalities plaguing humanity. Then, I will review TELL A STAR, a 3-channel installation, where I divert the history of the first American satellite, Telstar (1962) through the lens of Afrofuturism, archival research and fluidity of identity. In the second node, I will review my project, Con-tain-er, its installation and performative elements and the role of “flows” within global shipping networks. Near the ending node, the role of networks, “junk,” and the use of workshops will be examined as part of my arts practice. Due to this growth, there have been occurrences of unauthorized access, which have been reduced thanks to “using a range of secure communication protocols, such as encryption and data concealment”. Using DNA's bio-molecular capabilities, the usage of DNA as a carrier for encryption and data concealing has increased in recent years. The realization that DNA may function as a transport medium sparked this movement. In this study, we first examine and briefly outline the evolution of the present DNA coding system. After that, the several ways DNA has been used to enhance encryption techniques are categorized. The benefits and drawbacks of these algorithms and the most recent advancements in DNA-based encryption techniques are discussed. Finally, we provide our thoughts on the potential future of DNA-based encryption algorithms. &nbsp

    Microglia clearance of single dying oligodendrocytes is mediated by Cx3cr1

    Myelin sheath, generated by oligodendrocytes, plays a vital role in ensheathing axons for efficient neural communication. Degeneration of myelin sheath is associated with several neurodegenerative diseases and aging. When myelin sheaths are damaged or degenerated, the resulting debris needs to be efficiently cleared to allow for regeneration and remyelination. The causes of myelin degeneration in various diseases vary, but the inability to effectively remove the myelin debris contributes to disease development and prevents tissue healing. Microglia are highly specialized phagocytic cells capable of recognizing and engulfing myelin debris. The Cx3cr1 gene, which is primarily expressed on microglial cells, plays a significant role in the process of debris clearance. To investigate the role of Cx3cr1 on clearance of single dying oligodendrocytes, we used a technique called 2Phatal. Longitudinal in vivo imaging revealed that microglia lacking the CX3CR1 receptor took on average 3 days longer to clear the targeted oligodendrocytes compared to controls.     Prevalência de câncer na região sul do brasil: principais fatores determinantes e condicionantes.

    O objetivo do estudo foi analisar a prevalência de câncer no Brasil e comparar os dados entre as regiões para saber si existe uma prevalência maior na região Sul, como foi feita uma análise dos fatores considerados como causadores dessa doença. Depois de uma análise da estimativa da INCA 2016 para o Brasil mostra uma prevalência maior de câncer de próstata, mama, pulmão e trato gastrointestinal na população da região Sul isso pode ser por causa de vários fatores incluídos como consumo de álcool, tabaco, alimentos industrializados entre outros. Foi feita uma comparação de dados entre os três estados da região Sul: Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, aonde mostrou maior prevalência de câncer em estado Rio Grande do Sul em quase todos os tipos de câncer citados. Esse tipo de estudo e feito para alertar que deve pensar em estratégias especificas para controlar e combater a doença começando com a própria população mudando o seu estilo de vida preocupando mais com a sua saúde, como o governo deve oferecer um plano para detecção precoce e tratamento

    THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN PROLACTIN LEVEL AND THE DURATION OF LACTATIONAL AMENORRHOEA IN LACTATING SUDANESE WOMEN

    Background: This study aimed to assess the relationship between the prolactin (PRL) level and the duration of lactational amenorrhoea in lactating Sudanese women. Methods: Sudanese women (135) from Omdurman area with different ages (18-41 years) and stages of lactation were included, 61 of them participated by giving venous blood samples and filling a questionnaire, while the others by filling the questionnaire only. Pregnant women, contraceptives users, and hypothyroid patients were excluded. The subjects were divided into lactational amenorrhoeic (Group I), and lactating menstruating subjects (Group II). Then each group was subdivided according to the duration of lactation into: - Lactating for six months or less. Lactating for more than six months. Prolactin level was measured using radioimmunoassay (RIA). Results: In this study the mean prolactin level in-group I (2934.99 mU/L) was significantly higher compared with group II (707.46 mU/L) (P<0.05). For the duration of lactation, PRL level in the first six months was higher (4414 mU/L), (1506.60 mU/L) in group I, and group II respectively, while this level decreased after six months (1538 mU/L), (517.19 mU/L) for the two groups. Also we found that factors like breast-feeding patterns, utilization of supplementary foods, and the number of parities had a significant effect on the duration of lactational amenorrhoea. Conclusions: There was a positive relationship between PRL level and the duration of lactational amenorrhoea (r=0.39)

    هدفت الدراسة الى التعرف على تأثير التمرينات المشابهة للعب في بعض القدرات البدنية والمهارية بكرة القدم الصالات، واستخدم الباحثان المنهج التجريبي لملائمته مشكلة البحث، وتم اختيار عينة البحث بالطريقة العمدية والبالغ عددهم (20) طالبة، وقام الباحثان بأجراء اختبارات القدرات البدنية قبليا وهي (اختبار الوثب العريض من الثبات للقوة الانفجارية) و(اختبار الحجل 5 حجلات لكل رجل للقوة المميزة بالسرعة) واختبارات المهارات وهي (اختبار المناولة نحو هدف صغير يبعد مسافة 10 م ، واختبار التهديف نحو هدف مقسم الى مربعات مرقمة من الجانبين) ومن ثم اجراء التجربة الرئيسية مدة شهرين بواقع وحديتين بالأسبوع وبمجموع (6) أسابيع وبإجمالي (12) وحدة تدريبية وتراوح زمن القسم الرئيسي في الوحدات التدريبي (30 – 40 دقيقة) استخدم فيها التمارين المشابهة للعب بشدد تدريبية تتراوح بين (80 – 90%)، بعدها تم اجراء الاختبارات البعدية مع مراعاة الظروف التي جرت في الاختبارات القبلية، واستخدم الباحثان الحقيبة الإحصائية (SPSS) لمعالجة البيانات احصائياً. وبينت نتائج البحث فروقا معنوية بين نتائج الاختبارات القبلية والبعدية في القدرات البدنية والمهارات الأساسية المستخدمة في البحث، وفاعلية التمارين المشابهة للعب لدى عينة البحث. وأوصى الباحثان باستخدام التمارين المشابهة للعب على طالبات كرة القدم الصالات وكذلك اجراء دراسة مشابهة على قدرات بدنية ومهارية أخرى وبفعاليات والعاب رياضية أخرى

    IL-17 level in patients with acute myocardial infarction and its effect on lipid profile

    Myocardial infarction (MI) is considered as the major cause of death and disability worldwide, and despite considerable advances in diagnosis and treatment, continues to be a major public health problem. Interleukin-17 (IL-17) is leukocyte-derived cytokine with effects especially on epithelial cells in various tissues. This study designed to investigate the level of IL-17 and its effect on lipid profile in patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction. The study included 50 patients with acute myocardial infarction forty healthy subjects as control group. The levels of IL-17 were significantly elevated in all patients groups (p < 0.001), total cholesterol, LDL, VLDL were significantly elevated (p < 0.001) in all patients as well.  There was positive correlation between IL-17 with HDL, while there was negative correlation with total cholesterol and LDL. The results show significant increase in levels of IL-17, in acute myocardial infarction patients. IL-17 positively correlated with HDL and negatively correlated with total cholesterol and LDL, which lead to consider it as cardio protective factor

    Comparative Study between Neopterin and Alvarado Score in the Diagnosis of Acute Appendicitis and Its Severity

    BACKGROUND: Acute appendicitis (AA) remains a complex case even for experienced surgeons. Rate of negative appendectomy is 5–40% and delayed intervention result in perforated appendicitis in 5–30% of cases. AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate NPT as a marker for the diagnosis of AA concerning its severity. And compare the diagnostic value of it with the ALV scoring system. METHODS: One hundred twenty patients presented with signs and symptoms of AA and underwent appendectomy, only 84 patients proved to be AA by histopathological examination, were included in the study. Blood samples for neopterin (NPT) estimation and Alvarado (ALV) score was calculated. Control group consists of 45 healthy individual. RESULTS: NPT levels were significantly higher in patients’ group than control with p = 0.001 at a cutoff point 5.3 nmol/L. The diagnostic accuracy of NPT was higher than ALV score. NPT sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value were 85.4%, 76.9%, 89%, and 70%, respectively. CONCLUSION: NPT significantly elevated in patient with AA and has a high diagnostic accuracy, with correlation to clinical features and severity of the inflammation
