AbstractThe present research was conducted to introduce a Visual Basic expert system to help the postgraduate students in the diagnosis and treatment of the most common and rare oral ulcers. A total of sixty postgraduate students shared in the study. They received the system on a CD-ROM and asked to evaluate it using a printed questionnaire. The oral ulcerative conditions merged in the database included, aphthous ulcers, chancre, traumatic ulcers, histoplasmosis ulcers, acute herpetic ulcers, burns, herpangina, tuberculosis, syphilis, gonorrhea, acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, herpes labialis, herpes zoster, erythema multiform, Steven Johnson's syndrome. The conditions also included, allergy, Behcet's syndrome, neutropenia, necrotizing sialometaplasia, pemphigus, ulcerative lichen planus, vitamin deficiency, anemia, lupus erythematosis, epidermolysis bullosa, pemphigoid, squaemous cell carcinoma, desquamative gingivitis and others. Results showed that the mean overall scoring quality of the program was 3.0 ± 0.7 with 75% success rate. It can be concluded that the introduced expert system was helpful to the postgraduate students in the diagnosis and treatment of the most common oral ulcers

H-infinity Model Reference Controller Design for Magnetic Levitation System

    Get PDF
In this paper, a new robust approach based on combining the model reference control with H-infinity technique is proposed. The goal of the proposed controller is to obtain an adequate transient response which may not be obtained when only H-infinity technique is used. This is done by adding the model reference block to the standard H-infinity feedback configuration. Then the overall block diagram is formulated by linear fractional transformation (LFT). The Magnetic Levitation which is a highly nonlinear, open loop unstable and uncertain system is used to show the effectiveness of the proposed controller. The results show that the proposed controller is very effective in compensating the system parameters variations with forcing the system output to track the output of the model reference. A variation of ±10% in system parameters is considered

Robust Entanglement in Atomic Systems via Lambda-Type Processes

    Get PDF
It is shown that the system of two three-level atoms in Λ\Lambda configuration in a cavity can evolve to a long-lived maximum entangled state if the Stokes photons vanish from the cavity by means of either leakage or damping. The difference in evolution picture corresponding to the general model and effective model with two-photon process in two-level system is discussed.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure

Anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties of Ipomoea nil (Linn.) Roth significantly alleviates cigarette smoke (CS)-induced acute lung injury via possibly inhibiting the NF-κB pathway

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a serious manifestation of acute lung injury (ALI), is a debilitating inflammatory lung disease that is caused by multiple risk factors. One of the primary causes that can lead to ALI/ARDS is cigarette smoke (CS) and its primary mode of action is via oxidative stress. Despite extensive research, no appropriate therapy is currently available to treat ALI/ARDS, which means there is a dire need for new potential approaches. In our study we explored the protective effects of 70 % methanolic-aqueous extract of Ipomoea nil (Linn.) Roth, named as In.Mcx against CS-induced ALI mice models and RAW 264.7 macrophages because Ipomoea nil has traditionally been used to treat breathing irregularities. Male Swiss albino mice (20–25 ± 2 g) were subjected to CS for 10 uninterrupted days in order to establish CS-induced ALI murine models. Dexamethasone (1 mg/kg), In.Mcx (100 200, and 300 mg/kg) and normal saline (10 mL/kg) were given to respective animal groups, 1 h before CS-exposure. 24 h after the last CS exposure, the lungs and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of all euthanized mice were harvested. Altered alveolar integrity and elevated lung weight-coefficient, total inflammatory cells, oxidative stress, expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β and IL-6) and chemokines (KC) were significantly decreased by In.Mcx in CS-exposed mice. In.Mcx also revealed significant lowering IL-1β, IL-6 and KC expression in CSE (4 %)-activated RAW 264.7 macrophage. Additionally, In.Mcx showed marked enzyme inhibition activity against Acetylcholinesterase, Butyrylcholinesterase and Lipoxygenase. Importantly, In.Mcx dose-dependently and remarkably suppressed the CS-induced oxidative stress via not only reducing the MPO, TOS and MDA content but also improving TAC production in the lungs. Accordingly, HPLC analysis revealed the presence of many important antioxidant components. Finally, In.Mcx showed a marked decrease in the NF-κB expression both in in vivo and in vitro models. Our findings suggest that In.Mcx has positive therapeutic effects against CS-induced ALI via suppressing uncontrolled inflammatory response, oxidative stress, lipoxygenase and NF-κB p65 pathway

Previous studies have investigated the overall performance of the modified Solvay process based on a new alkaline compound, namely, KOH. Preliminary results have confirmed its high reactivity and effectiveness in capturing CO2 and managing reject brine. In this study, parametric sensitivity analysis has been carried out to optimize the operating conditions and thereby maximize CO2 capture and ions removal from high-salinity brines. Response surface methodology (RSM) analysis using the central composite design (CCD) approach was implemented to statistically determine the impact of important operating conditions, including KOH concentration (30–110 g/l), CO2 gas flow rate (400–1600 ml/min), gauge pressure (1–3 barg), and temperature (10–50 °C) on key response process output variables, such as CO2 uptake and ions reduction. The importance of these parameters and their interactions were confirmed by employing analysis of variance (ANOVA) approach at a confidence level of 95% (p < 0.05). These analyses demonstrated that under the optimized conditions of a temperature of 10 °C, gauge pressure of 2.1 barg, CO2 gas flow rate of 848.5 ml/min, KOH concentration of 110 g/l, and an inert mixing particle volume fraction of 15%, a maximum CO2 uptake value of 0.58 g/g KOH, maximum sodium (Na+) removal of 44.1%, chloride (Cl−) removal of 40.1%, calcium (Ca2+) removal of 100%, and magnesium (Mg2+) removal of 99.8% were achieved. The characterization of the collected solid products at optimum conditions revealed the production of valuable and useful products, particularly sodium and potassium bicarbonates, in addition to KCl.Open Access funding is provided by the Qatar National Library.Scopu

Fabrication of CdS/CdTe-based thin film solar cells using an electrochemical technique

    Get PDF
Thin film solar cells based on cadmium telluride (CdTe) are complex devices which have great potential for achieving high conversion efficiencies. Lack of understanding in materials issues and device physics slows down the rapid progress of these devices. This paper combines relevant results from the literature with new results from a research programme based on electro-plated CdS and CdTe. A wide range of analytical techniques was used to investigate the materials and device structures. It has been experimentally found that n-, i- and p-type CdTe can be grown easily by electroplating. These material layers consist of nano- and micro-rod type or columnar type grains, growing normal to the substrate. Stoichiometric materials exhibit the highest crystallinity and resistivity, and layers grown closer to these conditions show n - p or p - n conversion upon heat treatment. The general trend of CdCl2 treatment is to gradually change the CdTe material’s n-type electrical property towards i-type or p-type conduction. This work also identifies a rapid structural transition of CdTe layer at 385 ± 5 °C and a slow structural transition at higher temperatures when annealed or grown at high temperature. The second transition occurs after 430 °C and requires more work to understand this gradual transition. This work also identifies the existence of two different solar cell configurations for CdS/CdTe which creates a complex situation. Finally, the paper presents the way forward with next generation CdTe-based solar cells utilising low-cost materials in their columnar nature in graded bandgap structures. These devices could absorb UV, visible and IR radiation from the solar spectrum and combine impact ionisation and impurity photovoltaic (PV) effect as well as making use of IR photons from the surroundings when fully optimised

    Get PDF
The Hyper-Kamiokande project is a 258-kton Water Cherenkov together with a 1.3-MW high-intensity neutrino beam from the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). The inner detector with 186-kton fiducial volume is viewed by 20-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) and multi-PMT modules, and thereby provides state-of-the-art of Cherenkov ring reconstruction with thresholds in the range of few MeVs. The project is expected to lead to precision neutrino oscillation studies, especially neutrino CP violation, nucleon decay searches, and low energy neutrino astronomy. In 2020, the project was officially approved and construction of the far detector was started at Kamioka. In 2021, the excavation of the access tunnel and initial mass production of the newly developed 20-inch PMTs was also started. In this paper, we present a basic overview of the project and the latest updates on the construction status of the project, which is expected to commence operation in 2027
