Terahertz Bloch oscillator with a modulated bias

    Get PDF
Electrons performing Bloch oscillations in an energy band of a dc-biased superlattice in the presence of weak dissipation can potentially generate THz fields at room temperature. The realization of such Bloch oscillator is a long-standing problem due to the instability of a homogeneous electric field in conditions of negative differential conductivity. We establish the theoretical feasibility of stable THz gain in a long superlattice device in which the bias is quasistatically modulated by microwave fields. The modulation waveforms must have at least two harmonics in their spectra.Comment: 5 page

Impurity-induced stabilization of solitons in arrays of parametrically driven nonlinear oscillators

Chains of parametrically driven, damped pendula are known to support soliton-like clusters of in-phase motion which become unstable and seed spatiotemporal chaos for sufficiently large driving amplitudes. We show that the pinning of the soliton on a "long" impurity (a longer pendulum) expands dramatically its stability region whereas "short" defects simply repel solitons producing effective partition of the chain. We also show that defects may spontaneously nucleate solitons.Comment: 4 pages in RevTeX; 7 figures in ps forma

The updated lichen biota of the archipelago comprises 356 species. Caloplaca maritima, Lecanora compallens, Verrucaria boblensis and Xanthoriicola physciae are reported for the first time for Russia, Lecanora aitema – for European Russia, Lecanora semipallida and Lichenodiplis lecanorae – for North-Western European Russia. Absconditella sphagnorum, Chaenothecopsis vainioana, Lempholemma polyanthes and Opegrapha niveoatra are new to the Leningrad Region, Arthonia byssacea and Lecanora subrugosa – to the Western Leningrad Region.

Two and three-dimensional oscillons in nonlinear Faraday resonance

We study 2D and 3D localised oscillating patterns in a simple model system exhibiting nonlinear Faraday resonance. The corresponding amplitude equation is shown to have exact soliton solutions which are found to be always unstable in 3D. On the contrary, the 2D solitons are shown to be stable in a certain parameter range; hence the damping and parametric driving are capable of suppressing the nonlinear blowup and dispersive decay of solitons in two dimensions. The negative feedback loop occurs via the enslaving of the soliton's phase, coupled to the driver, to its amplitude and width.Comment: 4 pages; 1 figur

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Exposures to an amphibole fiber in Libby, Montana cause increases in malignant mesothelioma (MM), a tumor of the pleural and peritoneal cavities with a poor prognosis. Affymetrix microarray/GeneSifter analysis was used to determine alterations in gene expression of a human mesothelial cell line (LP9/TERT-1) by a non-toxic concentration (15×106 μm2/cm2) of unprocessed Libby six-mix and negative (glass beads) and positive (crocidolite asbestos) controls. Because manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD; SOD2) was the only gene upregulated significantly (p < 0.05) at both 8 and 24 h, we measured SOD protein and activity, oxidative stress and glutathione (GSH) levels to better understand oxidative events after exposure to non-toxic (15×106 μm2/cm2) and toxic concentrations (75×106 μm2/cm2) of Libby six-mix.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Exposure to 15×106 μm2/cm2 Libby six-mix elicited significant (p < 0.05) upregulation of one gene (<it>SOD2</it>; 4-fold) at 8 h and 111 gene changes at 24 h, including a 5-fold increase in <it>SOD2</it>. Increased levels of SOD2 mRNA at 24 h were also confirmed in HKNM-2 normal human pleural mesothelial cells by qRT-PCR. SOD2 protein levels were increased at toxic concentrations (75×106 μm2/cm2) of Libby six-mix at 24 h. In addition, levels of copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu/ZnSOD; SOD1) protein were increased at 24 h in all mineral groups. A dose-related increase in SOD2 activity was observed, although total SOD activity remained unchanged. Dichlorodihydrofluorescein diacetate (DCFDA) fluorescence staining and flow cytometry revealed a dose- and time-dependent increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) production by LP9/TERT-1 cells exposed to Libby six-mix. Both Libby six-mix and crocidolite asbestos at 75×106 μm2/cm2 caused transient decreases (p < 0.05) in GSH for up to 24 h and increases in gene expression of heme oxygenase 1 (<it>HO-1</it>) in LP9/TERT-1 and HKNM-2 cells.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Libby six-mix causes multiple gene expression changes in LP9/TERT-1 human mesothelial cells, as well as increases in SOD2, increased production of oxidants, and transient decreases in intracellular GSH. These events are not observed at equal surface area concentrations of nontoxic glass beads. Results support a mechanistic basis for the importance of SOD2 in proliferation and apoptosis of mesothelial cells and its potential use as a biomarker of early responses to mesotheliomagenic minerals.</p

ANALYSIS OF THE MARKETING POTENTIAL OF ENRICHED FOOD PRODUCTS FOR PREGNANT WOMEN

The article presents the results of the analysis of the marketing potential of fortified food products for the nutrition of women during breastfeeding and pregnancy. Catering for pregnant women is one of the important conditions for the normal pregnancy, stable functioning of the organs and systems of a woman during this difficult period and the birth of a healthy baby. There is a deficiency of a wide range of nutrients in pregnant and lactating women in various regions of Russia, so this problem solution can be considered a very promising direction in the state food industry. In the course of marketing research, a simultaneous cross-sectional study has been carried out, the possibility of using a food enrichment system from domestic raw materials of deep processing to produce an assortment of functional pastes has been assessed. The demand for the developed product line of products in the market has been studied and a target audience has been revealed. The calculations of the optimal price level for fortified products for the therapeutic and prophylactic nutrition of pregnant women are presented, the range of retail prices per unit of finished product has been determined. The potential market capacity has been estimated, the values obtained in answering the questions of marketing research have been taken as an assumption. The results obtained indicate that the increase in the price of developed finished products compared to traditional don’t not go beyond the purchasing power of the target audience. At the same time, the proposed product line of pastes with a therapeutic and prophylactic orientation will make it possible to correct violations of female homeostasis during pregnancy and breastfeedin

Travelling solitons in the parametrically driven nonlinear Schroedinger equation

We show that the parametrically driven nonlinear Schroedinger equation has wide classes of travelling soliton solutions, some of which are stable. For small driving strengths nonpropogating and moving solitons co-exist while strongly forced solitons can only be stably when moving sufficiently fast.Comment: The paper is available as the JINR preprint E17-2000-147(Dubna, Russia) and the preprint of the Max-Planck Institute for the Complex Systems mpipks/0009011, Dresden, Germany.
