Labor market impacts of employment quotas for the disabled in Brazil

A inserção ocupacional das pessoas com deficiências e com limitações funcionais menos severas são analisados antes e após a implementação da Lei das Cotas. Os diferenciais são decompostos em (i) fatores produtivos ou socioeconômicos; e (ii) fatores não observáveis, como discriminação e dificuldades sociais. Os fatores não observáveis, que desempenham um papel importante na determinação das diferenças nas taxas de emprego, reduziram substancialmente, especialmente para aqueles com limitações mais severas. Entretanto, enquanto esses trabalhadores continuam obtendo empregos de baixa remuneração, os ocupados com limitações menos severas e mais qualificados atingiram as melhores posições ocupacionais e salários mais elevados.The occupational achievements of people with disabilities and those with less severe functional limitations are analyzed before and after the implementation of employment quotas. The differentials are decomposed into (i) productive or socioeconomic factors; and (ii) unobservable factors such as discrimination and other social constraints. The unobservable difficulties, which play an important role in determining differences in employment rates, reduced substantially, especially for people with more severe limitations. However, while these workers continue to obtain low paid jobs, those most qualified with less severe limitations attained better occupational positions, and hence, higher wages

Estrutura de ocupações e distribuição de rendimentos: uma análise da experiência brasileira nos anos 2000

Em um contexto de profundas transformações na economia e no mercado de trabalho, o objetivo deste trabalho é analisar as relações entre a dinâmica da estrutura de ocupações e da distribuição de rendimentos no Brasil nos anos 2000. Primeiramente, verifica-se em que medida a prevalência de ocupações pouco qualificadas e de baixa remuneração contribui para o elevado estágio de exclusão e desigualdade do país. Verifica-se ainda como as mudanças na composição e nos rendimentos dos principais grupos ocupacionais contribuíram para o crescimento da renda e a redução da desigualdade no Brasil. TIPOLOGIA MUNICIPAL DE CLASSES SÓCIO-OCUPACIONAIS: UMA NOVA DIMENSÃO PARA ANÁLISE DAS DESIGUALDADES TERRITORIAIS NO BRASIL

O objetivo principal deste trabalho é propor uma nova configuração para o território brasileiro, fornecendo uma relevante dimensão para análise das desigualdades sociais brasileiras. A hipótese central é que a estrutura social, uma conjugação entre inserção no mercado de trabalho (classe ocupacional) e faixa de renda per capita (estrato social) das famílias brasileiras, é capaz de identificar padrões sociais que cumprem papel essencial nas análises sobre as condições de vida da população. Para cumprir tal objetivo, este trabalho foi estruturado em três partes principais: i) descrição da metodologia de estratificação social; ii) identificação dos grupos de municípios relativamente homogêneos de desenvolvimento da estrutura social (perfis sociais) e análise espacial desta configuração; iii) análise das desigualdades territoriais brasileiras utilizando o perfil social como variável de controle.---------------------------------------------The main purpose of this work is to propose a new configuration of Brazilian territory, providing a relevant dimension to the analysis of Brazilian social inequalities. Migration and Democratization in Brazil: The Case of Electoral Participation and Competition

Deepening democratization in Brazil has coincided with sustained flows of domestic migration. This raises an important question of whether migration deepens or depresses democratic development in migrant-sending regions. Whereas earlier perspectives view migration as a political "brain drain," we contend that out-migration can generate resources that promote democratic processes back home. We investigate the role of migration in two aspects of democratization: electoral participation and competition. The analyses are based on spatial panel data models of mayoral election results across all municipalities between 1996 and 2012. The results show that migration increases electoral participation and competition in migrant-sending localities in Brazil. This study also identifies the sociopolitical context that conditions the impact of migration: the effect is most often present in the context of rural-urban migration and is more pronounced in sending localities with less democratic political structures than those with more democratic structures. Moreover, using spatial network models, we find evidence for the transmission of political remittances from migration destination municipalities to origin municipalities. The present study extends the research on the "migration-development nexus" to the political arena, thus demonstrating the value of integrating demographic processes into explanations of political change

Valorando o conforto ambiental: atitudes e comportamento na disposição a pagar

This project purpose is to analyze the efficiency of the contingent valuation method, applying its technique for economic estimation of environmental comfort (thermal, acoustical and luminous) ofUniversity of Campinas administrative buildings. The specificity of the study allowed for a better assessment of the method itself. Considering that the socio-economic variables and the people behavior could undermine the research results, it was important to identify people's attitudes that were capable of biasing their economic estimates. The results' analysis has shown that one cannotjust follow the standard recommendations for a Contingent Valuation research as to obtain a reliable estimation. It would be necessary to study the attitudes as to understand the preferences distribution of the population and to identify the biases sources of the estimates. In this research the identification of those attitudes has been crucially important to enhance the estimators precision, to the analysis of the estimation reliability and to the determining ofthe main beneficiaries groups of a projectto adequate the internal spaces of the University to the ideal conditions of environmental comfort
