COLORS IN UNIVERSITY STUDY ENVIRONMENT: STUDENTS' DESIGN COMPETITION ANALYSIS

    Get PDF
The purpose of the research is to study the way students visualise their study environment. A students’ design competition was held as part of a scientific-research project. The article analyses projects received during the competition and the tendencies they mark out concerning the role of colours and materials as an important means for visual differentiation of single-purpose functional zones in a multi-functional common space of a university study room. Projects are grouped based on the common features they share. Specifics of every group of features are compared with contemporary tendencies of using colours to optimize the working environment in study rooms

Macrobenthos of the intertidal zone in the Gizhiginskaya Guba and Yamskaya Guba (Shelikhov Bay, Okhotsk Sea)

The intertidal zone of the Gizhiginskaya Guba and Yamskaya Guba inlets located in the Shelikhov Bay is surveyed and 179 species are found in its macrobenthos (66 plants and 113 animals). They form 25 communities, including 7 ones on soft bottom sediments, 12 - on hard substrates, and 6 transitional (mixed) communities. The community of Lyonsia cucumerina is endemic of the Shelikhov Bay, it occupies the mixed substrate, namely flat rocks covered with silty sand that occur in the Gizhiginskaya Guba and at Ust’-Palana

Small Dense Low-Density Lipoprotein as Biomarker for Atherosclerotic Diseases

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) plays a key role in the development and progression of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. LDL consists of several subclasses of particles with different sizes and densities, including large buoyant (lb) and intermediate and small dense (sd) LDLs. It has been well documented that sdLDL has a greater atherogenic potential than that of other LDL subfractions and that sdLDL cholesterol (sdLDL-C) proportion is a better marker for prediction of cardiovascular disease than that of total LDL-C. Circulating sdLDL readily undergoes multiple atherogenic modifications in blood plasma, such as desialylation, glycation, and oxidation, that further increase its atherogenicity. Modified sdLDL is a potent inductor of inflammatory processes associated with cardiovascular disease. Several laboratory methods have been developed for separation of LDL subclasses, and the results obtained by different methods can not be directly compared in most cases. Recently, the development of homogeneous assays facilitated the LDL subfraction analysis making possible large clinical studies evaluating the significance of sdLDL in the development of cardiovascular disease. Further studies are needed to establish guidelines for sdLDL evaluation and correction in clinical practice

Wavelet transform‐based seismic facies classification and modelling: application to a geothermal target horizon in the NE German Basin

At the geothermal test site near Groß Schönebeck (NE German Basin), a new 3D seismic reflection survey was conducted to study geothermal target layers at around 4 km depth and 150°C. We present a workflow for seismic facies classification and modelling which is applied to a prospective sandstone horizon within the Rotliegend formation. Signal attributes are calculated along the horizon using the continuous Morlet wavelet transform. We use a short mother wavelet to allow for the temporal resolution of the relatively short reflection signals to be analysed. Time‐frequency domain data patterns form the input of a neural network clustering using self‐organizing maps. Neural model patterns are adopted during iterative learning to simulate the information inherent in the input data. After training we determine a gradient function across the self‐organizing maps and apply an image processing technique called watershed segmentation. The result is a pattern clustering based on similarities in wavelet transform characteristics. Three different types of wavelet transform patterns were found for the sandstone horizon. We apply seismic waveform modelling to improve the understanding of the classification results. The modelling tests indicate that thickness variations have a much stronger influence on the wavelet transform response of the sandstone horizon compared with reasonable variations of seismic attenuation. In our interpretation, the assumed thickness variations could be a result of variable paleo‐topography during deposition of predominantly fluvial sediments. A distinct seismic facies distribution is interpreted as a system of thicker paleo‐channels deposited within a deepened landscape. The results provide constraints for the ongoing development of the geothermal test site.BMWi, 0324065 TIB, Rissdominierte Erschließung eines tiefen geothermischen Reservoirs zur Stromerzeugung im Norddeutschen Becken - seismische Erkundung, Konzeption und bohrtechnische Planung am Standort Groß Schönebec
