    We classify compact homogeneous geometries of irreducible spherical type and rank at least 2 which admit a transitive action of a compact connected group, up to equivariant 2-coverings.     Electron correlations and single-particle physics in the Integer Quantum Hall Effect

    The compressibility of a two-dimensional electron system with spin in a spatially correlated random potential and a quantizing magnetic field is investigated. Electron-electron interaction is treated with the Hartree-Fock method. Numerical results for the influences of interaction and disorder on the compressibility as a function of the particle density and the strength of the magnetic field are presented. Localization-delocalization transitions associated with highly compressible region in the energy spectrum are found at half-integer filling factors.     PERFORMANCE EVALUATION UNDER UNCERTAINTY: THE IMPACT OF INFORMATION SYSTEM INTEGRATION ON PROCEDURAL JUSTICE PERCEPTIONS

    The design and functioning of organizational control systems that allow for the monitoring of employee performance is at the core of management accounting research. With the emergence of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and the recent developments towards information system integration, the traditional structures of organizational control mechanisms have significantly changed. Only sparse evidence exists, however, regarding the role that the integration of information technology plays in performance measurement and evaluation. As a response, this paper investigates the impact that information system integration has on managers’ attitudes towards their performance evaluation processes. Based on organizational justice theory we hypothesize that integrated information systems positively impact managers’ perceptions of procedural justice, as these systems can improve the comprehensiveness and objectivity of performance data as well as the traceability of managers’ decisions. We further hypothesize that this effect is amplified with an increasing environmental uncertainty the managers perceive. Survey evidence from 132 managers of companies in Germany confirms the hypotheses and highlights the importance of integrated information systems in the performance evaluation process

    Nosocomial infections present a growing challenge in wound care, especially in light of the rising distribution of multiresistant bacterial strains. Because wounds are an ideal breeding ground for pathogens, special care must be taken in choosing the right dressing. Following the traditional preventive approach, exposure of the nursing staff as well as the wounds to pathogens should be reduced. Dressings allowing a reduced frequency of dressing changes may help accomplish this. During dressing changes the dressing should allow for safe handling with a low risk of contamination. To protect the patient, the dressing should minimise exposure to pathogens during wear time as well as promote healing even if the dressing remains on the wound for a longer period of time.     Estimating Average Treatment Effects in Regression Discontinuity Designs with Covariates under Minimal Assumptions

    We study regression discontinuity designs with the use of additional covariates for estimation of the average treatment effect. We provide a detailed proof of asymptotic normality of the covariate-adjusted estimator under minimal assumptions, which may serve as an accessible text to the mathematics behind regression discontinuity with covariates. In addition, this proof carries at least three benefits. First of all, it allows to draw straightforward consequences concerning the impact of the covariates on the bias and variance of the estimator. In fact, we can provide conditions under which the influence of the covariates on the bias vanishes. Moreover, we show that the variance in the covariate-adjusted case is never worse than in the case of the baseline estimator under a very general invertibility condition. Finally, our approach does not require the existence of potential outcomes, allowing for a sensitivity analysis in case confounding cannot be ruled out, e.g., by a manipulated forcing variable.Comment: 36 page

    Release of Mast Cell Tryptase into Saliva: A Tool to Diagnose Food Allergy by a Mucosal Challenge Test?

    Background: Our aim was to examine whether measurement of the saliva mast cell tryptase (MCT) concentrations before and after a mucosal challenge test with the offending food would be helpful in diagnosing food allergy. Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of 44 food challenge tests performed in 38 patients between 2006 and 2009. Patients with a suspected history of food allergy chewed the food until they developed symptoms or until the amount of time known from the patients' history to usually be required for the provocation of symptoms had passed. In 5 patients, saliva samples for the measurement of MCT were collected at minutes 0, 1, 4, 8, 11, and 16 after the first onset of symptoms. The remainder of the patients only had samples taken before chewing and 4 min after the end of the test period. Results: During repeated measurements, MCT peaked about 4 min after the onset of symptoms (p = 0.028). During 33 of the 44 tests (75.0%), we observed oral symptoms during testing; after 25 of the 33 (75.8%) tests evoking symptoms, the saliva MCT concentration increased. The MCT increase was negative in all other tests where no oral symptoms could be provoked. Conclusions: The measurement of saliva MCT 4 min after the onset of symptoms may be helpful to diagnose food allergy. Because of numerous confounding variables, however, a negative saliva MCT increase does not exclude food allergy. Copyright (C) 2011 S. Karger AG, Base

    The Drosophila methyl-DNA binding protein MBD2/3 interacts with the NuRD complex via p55 and MI-2

    BACKGROUND: Methyl-DNA binding proteins help to translate epigenetic information encoded by DNA methylation into covalent histone modifications. MBD2/3 is the only candidate gene in the Drosophila genome with extended homologies to mammalian MBD2 and MBD3 proteins, which represent a co-repressor and an integral component of the Nucleosome Remodelling and Deacetylase (NuRD) complex, respectively. An association of Drosophila MBD2/3 with the Drosophila NuRD complex has been suggested previously. We have now analyzed the molecular interactions between MBD2/3 and the NuRD complex in greater detail. RESULTS: The two MBD2/3 isoforms precisely cofractionated with NuRD proteins during gel filtration of extracts derived from early and late embryos. In addition, we demonstrate that MBD2/3 forms multimers, and engages in specific interactions with the p55 and MI-2 subunits of the Drosophila NuRD complex. CONCLUSION: Our data provide novel insights into the association between Drosophila MBD2/3 and NuRD proteins. Additionally, this work provides a first analysis of the architecture of the Drosophila NuRD complex

    Insights into Arbovirus Evolution and Adaptation from Experimental Studies

    Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) are maintained in nature by cycling between vertebrate hosts and haematophagous invertebrate vectors. These viruses are responsible for causing a significant public health burden throughout the world, with over 100 species having the capacity to cause human disease. Arbovirus outbreaks in previously naΓ―ve environments demonstrate the potential of these pathogens for expansion and emergence, possibly exacerbated more recently by changing climates. These recent outbreaks, together with the continued devastation caused by endemic viruses, such as Dengue virus which persists in many areas, demonstrate the need to better understand the selective pressures that shape arbovirus evolution. Specifically, a comprehensive understanding of host-virus interactions and how they shape both host-specific and virus-specific evolutionary pressures is needed to fully evaluate the factors that govern the potential for host shifts and geographic expansions. One approach to advance our understanding of the factors influencing arbovirus evolution in nature is the use of experimental studies in the laboratory. Here, we review the contributions that laboratory passage and experimental infection studies have made to the field of arbovirus adaptation and evolution, and how these studies contribute to the overall field of arbovirus evolution. In particular, this review focuses on the areas of evolutionary constraints and mutant swarm dynamics; how experimental results compare to theoretical predictions; the importance of arbovirus ecology in shaping viral swarms; and how current knowledge should guide future questions relevant to understanding arbovirus evolution

    Unconventional conductance plateau transitions in quantum Hall wires with spatially correlated disorder

    Quantum transport properties in quantum Hall wires in the presence of spatially correlated random potential are investigated numerically. It is found that the potential correlation reduces the localization length associated with the edge state, in contrast to the naive expectation that the potential correlation increases it. The effect appears as the sizable shift of quantized conductance plateaus in long wires, where the plateau transitions occur at energies much higher than the Landau band centers. The scale of the shift is of the order of the strength of the random potential and is insensitive to the strength of magnetic fields.
