    Products of Farey graphs are totally geodesic in the pants graph

    We show that for a surface S, the subgraph of the pants graph determined by fixing a collection of curves that cut S into pairs of pants, once-punctured tori, and four-times-punctured spheres is totally geodesic. The main theorem resolves a special case of a conjecture made by Aramayona, Parlier, and Shackleton and has the implication that an embedded product of Farey graphs in any pants graph is totally geodesic.     Linear relaxation to planar Travelling Waves in Inertial Confinement Fusion

    We study linear stability of planar travelling waves for a scalar reaction-diffusion equation with non-linear anisotropic diffusion. The mathematical model is derived from the full thermo-hydrodynamical model describing the process of Inertial Confinement Fusion. We show that solutions of the Cauchy problem with physically relevant initial data become planar exponentially fast with rate s(\eps',k)>0, where \eps'=\frac{T_{min}}{T_{max}}\ll 1 is a small temperature ratio and k≫1k\gg 1 the transversal wrinkling wavenumber of perturbations. We rigorously recover in some particular limit (\eps',k)\rightarrow (0,+\infty) a dispersion relation s(\eps',k)\sim \gamma_0 k^{\alpha} previously computed heuristically and numerically in some physical models of Inertial Confinement Fusion

    Acousto-optic imaging using quantum memories in cryogenic rare earth ion doped crystals

    The interaction of ultrasound and light in biological tissues results in a small amount of the scattered light being shifted relative to the carrier frequency (typically 1 part in 108). We have developed an inherently efficient and low noise quantum memory based technique to selectively absorb these ultrasound tagged photons in a pair of atomic frequency combs, and recover them delayed in time as a photon echo. In this manner we have demonstrated record ultrasoundmodulated sideband-to-carrier discrimination (49dB). Further, we confirm that the technique is compatible with highly scattering samples, and present initial acoustic pulse tracking measurements. This strongly suggests the suitability of the technique for biological tissue imaging

    Public experiences of mass casualty decontamination

    In this article, we analyze feedback from simulated casualties who took part in field exercises involving mass decontamination, to gain an understanding of how responder communication can affect people’s experiences of and compliance with decontamination. We analyzed questionnaire data gathered from 402 volunteers using the framework approach, to provide an insight into the public’s experiences of decontamination and how these experiences are shaped by the actions of emergency responders. Factors that affected casualties’ experiences of the econtamination process included the need for greater practical information and better communication from responders, and the need for privacy. Results support previous findings from small-scale incidents that involved decontamination in showing that participants wanted better communication from responders during the process of decontamination, including more practical information, and that the failure of responders to communicate effectively with members of the public led to anxiety about the decontamination process. The similarity between the findings from the exercises described in this article and previous research into real incidents involving decontamination suggests that field exercises provide a useful way to examine the effect of responder communication strategies on the public’s experiences of decontamination. Future exercises should examine in more detail the effect of various communication strategies on the public’s experiences of decontamination. This will facilitate the development of evidence-based communication strategies intended to reduce anxiety about decontamination and increase compliance among members of the public during real-life incidents that involve mass decontamination
