L'Istoria dell'antica Grecia di William Robertson: alcune riflessioni su un'errata attribuzione

Il breve saggio intende proporre alcune riflessioni sull'identità dell'autore della History of the Ancient Greece, contribuendo così a chiarire un equivoco che tutt'oggi permane tra alcuni studiosi. L'opera, realizzata dall'archivista William Robertson, venne tradotta in italiano con un discreto successo nell'Ottocento e attribuita al suo più celebre omonimo, lo storico edimburghese che fu tra i principali esponenti dell'Illuminismo scozzese. Attraverso la ricostruzione di momenti significativi del processo di ricezione e di adattamento del testo, verrà descritta la genesi dell'errata attribuzione, concentrando in particolar modo l'attenzione sul ruolo che gli stessi traduttori e stampatori ebbero nel creare, consapevolmente o meno, le condizioni per un consolidamento dell'errore negli studi italiani.  This paper aims to reflect about the identity of the History of Ancient Greece's author, in order to clarify a misunderstanding that today still exists among scholars. During the Nineteenth-Century this History, written by the Scottish Keeper of Record William Robertson, was translated into Italian, with a good success, and it was attributed to the famous historian William Robertson, one of the most important exponents of the Scottish Enlightenment. Through the reconstruction of some significant moments in the process of reception and adaptation of the text, I will describe the genesis of the incorrect attribution, focusing the attention on the role that translators and printers had to create, consciously or not, the conditions for the consolidation of misunderstanding.

I will examine some paradigmatic examples, by paying attention to both textual and paratextual adaptations elaborated by the publishers and translators in order to attract readers’ attention (lexical omissions or additions, manipulations of sentences, insertion of prefaces, cartographic materials, notes, tables of contents)

La circolazione europea delle 'Rivoluzioni d'Italia' di Carlo Denina

This article aims at exploring the European reception of Carlo Denina’s Rivoluzioni d’Italia. This work, published in Italian between 1769 and 1771 had a significant circulation in France and England and a lot of translations were realised in the 1770s. Trying to combine different approaches (cultural history of translations, book history, material bibliography), in this paper we will focus the attention on a comparison between the French and the English translation, in order to reflect on the role played by translators and publishers in the “manipulation” of the original text

Analizzare, mappare e promuovere il patrimonio culturale di Firenze e del suo territorio

One of the most urgent challenges for European academic and cultural institutions is to promote an intelligent use of materials and resources available on the web, by implementing best practices of web archiving, and building scientifically valid databases which can have a positive social impact. This paper will present the theoretical and methodological framework of Eredità Culturali, an ongoing project that aims at answering this challenge by focusing on the Florentine cultural heritage. The first stage of Eredità Culturali consisted in surveying similar initiatives within the European research landscape and examining national and international cataloguing models and standards to build a data entry prototype that interacts with other systems. Hence, a flexible and open-access web platform has been designed to validate, preserve and consult cultural information from disparate data sets into a single archive. A geo-referenced information system has also been developed, in which four databases designed by the Department's research groups of Geography, Archaeology, Performing Arts and History of the Book will converge and make sound data available for both non-academic and professional audiences. The analytical investigation is integrated with original ways of dissemination that will facilitate historical connections between different cultural heritages and legacies. Una delle sfide più urgenti per le istituzioni accademiche e culturali europee è quella di promuovere un uso intelligente dei materiali e delle risorse disponibili sul web, sostenendo le migliori pratiche di archiviazione digitale e costruendo database su basi scientifiche, che possono avere un impatto positivo sulla società. Questo articolo intende presentare i presupposti teorici e metodologici che sono alla base di Eredità Culturali, un progetto che si propone di rispondere a questa sfida concentrando l’attenzione sul patrimonio culturale fiorentino. Sono stati esaminati i modelli e gli standard di catalogazione nazionali e internazionali ed è stato costruito un prototipo di data entry che potesse interagire al meglio con gli altri sistemi presenti nel panorama europeo e una piattaforma digitale flessibile e open-access per poter validare, conservare e consultare informazioni culturali provenienti da differenti datasets. Infine, è stato sviluppato un sistema informativo georeferenziato nel quale convergeranno i database implementati dai gruppi di ricerca di Geografia, Archeologia, Storia dello Spettacolo e Storia del Libro. I dati saranno a disposizione di un pubblico generalista così come dei professionisti del settore e verranno presentati grazie a originali metodi di disseminazione delle conoscenze che faciliteranno le connessioni storiche tra le differenti eredità culturali

Integration of substrate- and flow-derived stresses in endothelial cell mechanobiology

International audienceEndothelial cells (ECs) lining all blood vessels are subjected to large mechanical stresses that regulate their structure and function in health and disease. Here, we review EC responses to substrate-derived biophysical cues, namely topography, curvature, and stiffness, as well as to flow-derived stresses, notably shear stress, pressure, and tensile stresses. Because these mechanical cues in vivo are coupled and are exerted simultaneously on ECs, we also review the effects of multiple cues and describe burgeoning in vitro approaches for elucidating how ECs integrate and interpret various mechanical stimuli. We conclude by highlighting key open questions and upcoming challenges in the field of EC mechanobiology
