    Evolution of the Virtual Human: From Term to Potential Application in Psychiatry

    Virtual reality applications in mental health have traditionally involved the creation of virtual environments that acted as provocative agents either for the purposes of the identification of disorders or their treatment. There is infrequent mention of the utilization of "virtual humans" despite the obvious significance of humans within our lives. More broadly, the term Virtual Human is frequently used in a number of contexts extending from its use as a term, modifying anything that needs to be modernized, to the application of 3D animated figures that exist in virtual realities. These applications refer to quite different phenomena in very different contexts leading to a high level of ambiguity and uncertainty when referring to virtual humans. In the following, the various applications of the term virtual human will be reviewed and critiqued through its most frequent applications, in various fields. They will be reviewed in an ascending manner from the least human of application to the most. Finally, a definition will be offered reflecting the potential complexity of the term as it reflects the expression of our most human factors, and how these are needed in the development of a model of a virtual human in psychiatry.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/63235/1/10949310050078751.pd

    Vivid Visualization in the Experience of Phobia in Virtual Environments: Preliminary Results

    We explored the effect of being able to form vivid mental images on the experience of phobia during exposure treatment in virtual environments. Taking subjects with acrophobia, we randomized them to two treatment groups: in vivo exposure treatment in a real building versus virtual exposure in a model of the same building, projected in a CAVE™ Virtual Environment. Using Marks' Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire (VVIQ-2) as a measure of vividness of visual imagery, we performed Pearson correlations of vividness with amount of fear experienced as measured by Pekala's Phenomenology of Consciousness Inventory (PCI). Contrary to expectation, we found a negative correlation between vividness of visualization and amount of fear experienced during exposure (R =- 0.77728, p = 0.0137). There was a positive correlation between fear and vividness of visualization during the exposure experience as measured by the PCI (R = 0.94083, p = 0.0171).     A definitional implementation of the LAX logical framework LLFP in CoQ, for supporting fast and loose reasoning

    The Lax Logical Framework, LLFP, was introduced, by a team including the last two authors, to provide a conceptual framework for integrating different proof development tools, thus allowing for external evidence and for postponing, delegating, or factoring-out side conditions. In particular, LLFP allows for reducing the number of times a proof-irrelevant check is performed. In this paper we give a shallow, actually definitional, implementation of LLFP in Coq, i.e. we use Coq both as host framework and oracle for LLFP. This illuminates the principles underpinning the mechanism of Lock-types and also suggests how to possibly extend Coq with the features of LLFP. The derived proof editor is then put to use for developing case-studies on an emerging paradigm, both at logical and implementation level, which we call fast and loose reasoning following Danielsson et alii [6]. This paradigm trades off efficiency for correctness and amounts to postponing, or running in parallel, tedious or computationally demanding checks, until we are really sure that the intended goal can be achieved.     Role of the Recoil Ion in Single-Electron Capture and Single-Ionization Processes for Collisions of Protons with He and Ar Atoms

    In this work the single-electron capture and single-ionization processes are studied for proton collisions with He and Ar atoms at impact energies in the range 25–100 keV. Classical trajectory Monte Carlo simulations are benchmarked against experimental data obtained at the reaction microscope in Bariloche, Argentina, which employs the cold target recoil-ion momentum spectroscopy technique. Special emphasis is placed on describing the momentum transfer to the recoil ion for these collision systems

    Experiences of COVID-19 pandemic-related stress among sexual and gender minority emerging adult migrants in the United States

    There is a dearth of research that examines COVID-19-related stress among multiply marginalised individuals who are in the developmental phase of emerging adulthood. This qualitative study investigated how the intersection of emerging adulthood, sexual and gender minority (SGM) identity, and migrant status were reflected in the experiences of SGM individuals (n = 37; ages 20–25 years old) who migrated to various parts of the United States in the last 5 years. Data were collected online using semi-structured interviews. Thematic analysis revealed that participants\u27 developmental processes (e.g., identity exploration, building financial independence) were shaped by pandemic-related stressors, especially unemployment and financial instability. Participants who were able to maintain employment did so but at the risk of their health and safety. Findings also showed that participants experienced feelings of anxiety and depression due to social isolation, but online communication played an important role in combatting loneliness. Findings highlight the potential for trauma-informed and intersectional approaches to practice with SGM emerging adult migrants and expanded health services and temporary entitlement programs to mitigate the pandemic\u27s effects on this population\u27s psychosocial and financial well-being

    A New Lease of Life for the Aosta Valley’s Consorterie

    Commons have existed in the Aosta Valley’s territory for centuries, of which the most distinguishing and still lively are called consorterie. This article aims to study this peculiar form of commons, as well as the evolution of their legal status, focusing on national and regional legislation. This paper also seeks to analyse a regional draft bill on commons written by a technical group appointed by the regional government. Its principal goal is to provide consorterie with a new legal status in line with the results achieved by scholars, jurisprudence and national legislation. Moreover, the legislative proposal explores the regional legislative competence related thereto by proposing some innovative solutions

    LF+ in Coq for fast-and-loose reasoning

    We develop the metatheory and the implementation, in Coq, of the novel logical framework LF+ and discuss several of its applications. LF+ generalises research work, carried out by the authors over more than a decade, on Logical Frameworks conservatively extending LF and featuring lock-type constructors L-P(N:sigma)[center dot]. Lock-types capture monadically the concept of inhabitability up-to. They were originally introduced for factoring-out, postponing, or delegating to external tools the verification of time-consuming judgments, which are morally proof-irrelevant, thus allowing for integrating different sources of epistemic evidence in a unique Logical Framework. Besides introducing LF+ and its "shallow" implementation in Coq, the main novelty of the paper is to show that lock-types are also a very flexible tool for expressing in Type Theory several diverse cognitive attitudes and mental strategies used in ordinary reasoning, which essentially amount to reasoning up-to, as in e.g. Typical Ambiguity provisos or co-inductive Coq proofs. In particular we address the encoding of the emerging paradigm of fast-and-loose reasoning, which trades off efficiency for correctness. This paradigm, implicitly used normally in naive Set Theory, is producing considerable impact also in computer architecture and distributed systems, when branch prediction and optimistic concurrency control are implemented
